I think Virgin did a 2 CD version of that called Techno Electronic Dance or something, which was leant to me in 1993. The same person also leant Transmat Relics. These 2 CDs totally changed my life. Relics is back in print for the first time in years on Buzz in Belgium. Forced Exposure has it. Relics has some super classic Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Suburban Knight etc stuff, but in my opinion, gets special mention because May through on all these unreleased pieces as "A Relic" by Long Ago or whatever, and they are really amazing.

the tracks I'm talking about look like they're only on the CD version though, damn.

and this CD:

http://www.discogs.com/release/140295

is what taught me that Chicago stuff was as weird as Detroit at times.

And there's always this, were Warp picked out there favorite Chicago, Detroit and early UK acid/house/techno, definately with an eye towards the more out there stripped down and moody stuff, no Inner City top 40 vocals or whatever:

Those are all good.

live at the liquid room by jeff mills is highly recommended...

robin (robin), Friday, 2 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless you really want whole tracks, mixes are more exciting. For innovative techno, I'd get:

Samuel L Sessions: Monoid
Heiko Laux: Temp. space
Justin Robertson: Imprint
Richie Hawtin: Decks, FX and a 909

"Interstellar Fugitives" by the folks at Underground resistance is still the best comp I've found since about 1998.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 3 January 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Kevin Saunderson: X-Mix: Deep Space radio is my favourite mix cd

There's a Juan Atkins compilation thats pretty good, but the title escapes me; I'll report back.

Nik (Nik), Saturday, 3 January 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

UR's first LP "Revolution For Change" is worth hunting down.
Derrick May's "Innovator" comp on transmat
"Virtual Sex" on Buzz
Planet E's "Elements 1989-1990"
the Red Planet CD on Red Planet
Jeff Mill's Tomorrow CD on Axis
Model 500's R&S Classics is a heavy Metroplex retrospective

Also although there's been no real M Plant comp i know of, Rob Hood's Minimal Nation doublepack is awesome.

martin (martin), Saturday, 3 January 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I always liked the first three XL comps (ie The First Chapter etc.) though they might not be what you're looking for.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

'Retro Techno Detroit Definitive' is great if you can find it - one of the first consciously retrospective techno comps.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 5 January 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam Beyer - Timewarp 3

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 5 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh Siegbran I saw that cheap somewhere the other day and now I can't remember where!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't 313 Detroit a beauty!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

a bloody beauty mate!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

fair dinkum.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the definitive aussie techno comp cobber? i have one with you pulling an extremely silly face in the booklet.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be the Volume one - Trans Pacific Express. We were told the label was on the point of folding so we didn't take it very seriously, hence the silly faces.

As it happened, it was the last thing they released.

I don't know much about Aussie techno comps, let alone definitive ones. TRM had a fairly decent compilation of the big Aussie techno tunes, but a bit too eclectic and commercial for this thread I think:

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking about Australian techno = total thread killa

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Tresor 2 comp was mentioned, but 1, 2, and 3 are all pretty good, 4 is okay, stopped paying attention after that but I think they're up to 9 or 10 now..

The "In Order to Dance" series on R&S had some gems.

The "True People" detroit techno comp on React records is nice - may be a bit hard to come by nowadays..

The old Plus 8 comp "From Our Mind to Yours" was pretty good..

Some of the DJ Kicks & X-Mix comps/mixes from !K7 were nice - in particular, from the DJ Kicks series check Stacey Pullen and Andrea Parker. As for the X-Mix series, Saunderson was mentioned, Hawtin & Acquiviva did an okay one, and check the Hardloor one for plenty of chicago acid treats..

pete from the street, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

OOPS - make that Hardfloor (not hardloor) in case you didnt catch that at the end there..

pete from the street, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

While we're raving about the Tresor comps - most of Tresor's 2nd comp, plus a whole lot of other terrific tracks, is on the 3XCD comp 'True Spirit':

http://www.discogs.com/release/32293

It's a truly great listen, as is 'From Our Minds...' on Plus 8, as Pete said.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

also got this recently
plus 8 classics

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you enjoy it gaz?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. for some reason i'd had the wrong idea about plus 8 and hawtin for years. the only other release i have is the "acid house for all" comp from around 95(?) and i had the misguided idea it was all stripped back bangin stuff on the label...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

er, that might not even be on plus 8...see how deluded i was?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Tresor I is great if only for "Der Klang Der Familie".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i like tresor six a lot. very very very minimal stuff, not for everyone, etc. maurizio's comp on maurizio/basic channel/chain reaction is probably esential, or perhaps "decay prodcut", which is a CD by a group called Various Artists. not exactly a comp?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

'Der Klang...' is surely one of the greatest German techno tracks ever. Happily, it was the first Tresor thing I ever heard. I remember where I was the precise moment I first heard it, like when Kennedy was shot or something.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)
