Are we just supposed to be able to, like, magically automatically recognize who these people are?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Those are the Ramones (if the big banner behind them failed to tip you off).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, what are those R, A, M, O, N, E, and S letters? Some kind of code?

I gotta go with the 1970-71 JBs (the lineup with Bootsy and Catfish Collins).

Are we just supposed to be able to, like, magically automatically recognize who these people are?

Yes, of course, ideally. I can't say that I recognized a couple posted after mine.

Mine were: the Sun Ra Arkestra, a sign advertising the FANIA All Stars (who I really like more in their other projects than all together, so that's cheating), and the Velvet Underground; but everyonme probably knew mine.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 2 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and motherfucking Jerry Lee Lewis!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

At one time or another I'd have said one of these for whatever reason.

Royal Trux
Giant Sand
Ramones
Yo La Tengo
Social Distortion
Sleater-Kinney
Steely Dan
Low
Flaming Lips
The Sadies

now, however:

Hah! Gear!, I'm off to play some Handsome Family songs at the open mic here in Seoul. Expect Drunk By Noon, The Dutch Boy and A Beautiful Thing to cross your mind for no reason later on tonight.
And I'll say...too:

Barbarity Itself, Saturday, 3 January 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex in NYC - pardon me, but who is the band sandwiched in between those Misfits and Devo pics you posted?

Schwingung (Damian), Saturday, 3 January 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's the late, great Cop Shoot Cop.

Thanks!

Well done Barbarity =D

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lynyrd Skynyrd. Period.

chuck, Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Right now: Either the Gore Gore Girls, Montgomery Gentry, or the Ying Yang Twins probably. Unless I'm forgetting somebody.

chuck, Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

do people here hate the beach boys? is it hip to not like them now?

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Saturday, 3 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

It was only hip to like them until they started sucking with *Pet Sounds,* I think. (Metal Mike Saunders of Great American Band the Angry Samoans could tell you for sure, though.)

chuck, Saturday, 3 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

i meant hip to dislike

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 4 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Some of the above bands fall short of being contenders for "greatest", surely.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 4 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blondie? Mercury Rev? The Doors?

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

and then the eye of the beholder fell out of its socket.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 4 January 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lynyrd Skynyrd. Period.

-- chuck (cedd...)

Lynyrd Skynyrd not only make me ashamed to be American, they make me ashamed to be a member of the same species.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 4 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why?

adam (adam), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

MX-80 Sound 'til they dropped the 'Sound'. Or else Velvet Underground 'til they dropped John Cale.

Scott Bloomfield, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kix.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not even Chuck Eddy goes that far!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'll agree with Merkin on the beach boys and scott on the vu. More recently whiskeytown and the flaming lips.

uzumaki (uzumaki), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago) link
