Midge Ure's Singing Is Pretty Ridiculous, Innit?

pace christgau, he sings like a parody of an opera singer.

i'm listening to a ure-era ultravox best-of now -- and while the music is mostly OK, ure's voice can get on my nerves and/or makes me wanna laugh.

Vienna was pretty good, but even there Ure was ridiculous.

Of course, that's what makes him so good. And what about The Thin Wall? That is so over the top it sudddenly becomes profoundly serious, if you just go with it - this ong in particular seems to tell me something bleak and urgent about life which somehow can't be pinned down. The 'and those who laugh' backing vocals, intoned like an assembly in church, is a particularly inspired and chilling touch.

See Midge isn't afraid to take it way over the top and that is so important for a pop artist.

I still can't work out whether I love or hate "If I Was". I do think "Forever And Ever" is great, and possibly his best ever single (both of these songs were UK #1s, and they're both better than "Vienna", so quit all that whining about Joe Dolce).
