Damn you to heck for liking music!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 3 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So what's Bob Seger's Seven like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it's edging toward the bob seger that america knows and loves. not nearly as good as mongrel or ramblin' gamblin' man but not as bad as...ya know, a bad bob seger album. it has its moments.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank 'ee!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

dear scott: you can tape me that ghettovetts album if you want. i stupidly and bizarrely enough no longer own my copy. i promise i would listen to it much quicker than it has taken me to listen to the swans tapes you made. (which i HAVE listened to, i just haven't though of anything to say about them.) you can put the hawklords LP, which i also stupidly no longer own, on the other side if you want.

i promise i'll send you many cool promo CDs this year in exchange....

chuck, Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(and voice radio is playing "interior street" by the death comet crew right now - -what a coincidence!)

ps) don't forget to file your pazz and jop ballot, scott!!!!!!!!!

chuck, Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake Holmes-So Close,So Very Far To Go (Polydor)

hey, since you're the only other person i've seen mention this in the history of the world, what do you think? ain't nearly as great as "the above ground sound of jake holmes"...

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

you can say that again, el sabor. i love the above ground sound album so i picked this one up thinking there would be some good stoned folk moments, but jeez it's kind of a stinker.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

dear chuck, i won't forget my ballot, i promise. i'm gonna send it in tomorrow. we went on a 9-day trip for the holidays and i'm a little behind. i will tape ghettovetts for you. perhaps you would like the stone cold stupid old school heavy metal rap of Rock Shock on the other side? They are M.C. Gregg "B" & Lawrence "14K" Lacks and all their songs sound like rockbox except not as good but they are funny anyway. They are leaning over a hotrod on the cover and saying:"Word The Mutha" & "Cold Took The Bacon"!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra makes me feel better about the world.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's truly a lovely thing, Nom.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid to ask how much this all cost.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, what the hell are you doing at the office?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

200 dollars american,Nate. Half I gave to my brother and half I gave to the mother of his child. I got the brotherly discount, but all his stuff is amazingly cheap(he had metal machine music priced at 25 bucks or something cheap like that). His store is in Hudson, New York and it's called John Doe if you are ever in that neck of the woods. He has one whole floor of a building that is just wall to wall records and a basement space that is more of the same. He runs it with the help of underground legend and icon to beard-strokers everywhere:Tom Greenwood of Jackie-O Motherfucker.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

25) Omega-Omega XI (Pepita)

Scott, you don't find that XI is a bit too 'advanced' an album number for Omega, do you?
Well, once uponzatime I used to quite like X myself for awhile but, honestly, now I don't think that they're any cop after III. (A copy of which I'm eagerly waiting for my friend to send me from Russia)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 4 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea what to expect when I picked the Omega album up. I quite like some of the synth-action, but the album as a whole doesn't seem to have aged well. What are the earlier albums like? More proggy I'm guessing?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 January 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

They've tried to tackle quite a few styles, I'd say. They've had their prog passages and hard-rocking moments, there're even certain numbers that approximate something synth pop-ish, and on nearly each of their late-70s/early-80s albs, I recall, there's a coupla 'beatless' ambient tracks awash in dreamy electronics... As for the ethnic or folk music element, it does also figure in their scheme of things, but it's kind of more distinct eralier on.
But it's not like I've memorized all of their records, ha! I've ever heard perhaps a half of those that precede Omega X. And what I myself remember most fondly is a handful of ballads and particular instrumentals from the early years. The last time I listend to Omega III was almost thirty years ago now, and it's also for that reason that I'm pretty intrigued by the possibility to listen to it anew some day :)
For allI know, Omega as a band might still be going in some form or another.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the Hungarian Omega? I used to own "Hall Of Floaters In The Sky" I think, were they not some kind of hellish East European cross between Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd? If you take a look at http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=709 you'll find that they released an album as recently as 1998, which is a goodie no doubt.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

And here they are :

East European cross between Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd

Rather apt a description.
Yes, the Hungarian Omega.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A HELLISH East European cross between Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd. Don't forget the hellish.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

XI definitely has its synth-pop moments. it's an odd record. great cover by the way!

I'd like to give a shout-out to The Unspoken Word!! That was the big surprise for me. Just a beautiful album. Truly sublime folk/psych. They put out another album in 1970 on Atco that I haven't heard. I might have to pick that up though I can't imagine it's as good for some reason.
And that Blues Project album caught me offguard as well. Apparently the blues dude left the band and the rest of the group was finally allowed to make a great, varied, garagey at times,classical/folk,jazzy(without being gassy) psych record that really floats my boat. Who knew? Or at least I don't remember anyone ever telling me that they had ever made such a thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hellish as in Black Sabbath or hellish as in irredeemable shit?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A HELLISH East European cross between Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd. Don't forget the hellish.
-- udu wudu

Hahaha!

...Erm, are you a Locmotiv GT fan then? Are you, udu wudu?
Also, could you give an example of a HEAVENLY West European cross between Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd?
;)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 4 January 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the first Locomotiv GT album, but for the life of me I can't remember what it sounds like.

I'm always interested in the translations of american/british/western euro styles by eastern euro and far east bands. i just picked up an album from the 70's by a Japanese band called Orient Express that is like a hellish version of early chicago/blood,sweat&tears with a little funk added for good measure that is quite odd for all it's hellishness. It has a certain quality that is hard for me to put my finger on. Must be the tokyo factor.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

>>Chuck, what the hell are you doing at the office? <<<

Pazz. And. Jop. (And I'm here again today.)

chuck, Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Seven hours from now will you set the poll page up so that anyone tries to send in a late entry gets a spam message saying "HA HA HA IT IS OVER I AM HOME YOU ARE LATE"? Because I'd be tempted to do that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)
