Taking Sides: Tupac Vs The Seahorses

One was an urban rap icon who didn't much care for guns and shooting people even though he was involved in a fair bit of it himself. Ended up being shot over childish disputes that could only happen in America.

The other was John Squire and a few buskers.

So who is better?

"yesterday, some hooligans knocked over a dustbin in shaftsbree"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 4 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The dude has been iconised but led a life with accusations of sexual assault, robbery and a dead kid caught in gun fire.

Wasn't all the shooting over this East Coast/ West Coast thing that no one really understands anyway? Couldn't they just go out for a beer?

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it always surprised me that Squire aligned with the West Coast, the Hull Caps never forgave him for that.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

whats with all these stupid threads by this c-man?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he has pictures of admins in compromising positions, which is why he hasn't been banned yet.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Mm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(or, unlike me, they've learned to ignore his silly ass)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No Nate, the reason is much more singular in source.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, childish territorial disputes only happen in the US, C-Man.

"Can't they all just go out for a beer?"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah our celebrities often shoot each other. I remember vividly the drive by blastings that erupted during the Blur Vs Oasis fued. Nah, they didn't just have a football match and call it quits after some mouthing off, they actually did go and shoot each other.

Come on, people who shoot other people for looking at them funny on a depressingly regular basis is an American thing as is finding idiots who actually rally for the right to own loaded guns in the name of "protection". Those rap losers who carry around weapons have no sympathy from me and should have no sympathy from anyone else who comes from a society that reasons, from an early age, that guns are bad are practically unavailable.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"rap losers", you have been warned.

C-Man, would it break your heart if I told you I recently saw Matt from Suede bogling to Spice-1? I asked him for an autograph and he even threatened to "peel my cap back".

Never any childish disputes there.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Again - DO THEY SHOOT EACH OTHER?

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Recent shootings in Birmingham, Leeds and London to thread.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

slight difference between Premier League footballers and young black performers from broken homes and impoverished neighbourhoods plagued by a spiralling culture of violence perpetuated by all parties i think

The gers supporters beat the crap outta Lennon on a regular basis don't they?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, one gun shooting in the UK and it makes headlines. One gun shooting in the US = normal day out.

If you even try and debate this you're onto a losing streak. America's culture of gun violence is astronomical.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I saw Bowling for Columbine too!

Patrick Kinghorn, Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's MY line!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Blame Canada!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah our beer serving during sporting events is just too radical. They'll even bring it to your seat at the ACC.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Its the only reason to see the Jays at the Skydome, drinking hand delivered 40s of Blue in the sun on company time with company tickets.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i defend the right to drink a hand delivered 40 by MY COLD DEAD HAND

haha!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, footballers (AND managers AND ground staff) do shoot each other all the time. The clubs like to keep it pretty hush-hush so you'll never hear anything in the papers about it, though. Check Pop Bitch for recent casualties.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You all have no clue. So by your definition the UK has the gun problem that America has?

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

How can any problem be the same internationally, also what is the point of this discussion, do you actually think the UK is free from problems or some kind of utopia, why don't you join the fucking army if you're so fucking patriotic, I'm sure you'd get on fine with all the towel whipping and homo-eroticism.

Jesus christ.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, listen man - it's not my problem that you feel the need to spread peanut butter on your scrotum and have stray dogs lick it off.

The army is indeed full of homo-eroticism, but I bet you wouldn't say that to their face would you? EH? EH? Coward eh?

Anyway, you like The Seahorses or Tupac or wot? Fecking butt head.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And who would you trust in a war? The nutters that join the army of bedwetters like Ronan? I know who I'd rather protect me.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And who would you trust in a war? The nutters that join the army or bedwetters like Ronan? I know who I'd rather protect me.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

do you want a badge or something for pointing out the US has the bigger gun problem? 'only in America' type remarks are pretty useless too - lots of things happen 'only in America', good and bad. it's been reported in the past that the UK has a bigger gun culture problem and murder rate than any other European country at least, not that this is particularly relevant to the oh-so-pressing issue of who is better out of Tupac (clearly skilled MC but with far more crap tracks than good imo) and the Seahorses (trite, turgid Britpop dullards with only half of a good tune to their name, if that)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

those were poor comebacks even for you.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

c-man should join the Army though, i can't think who i'd rather have on the front line

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"damn suds, tryna look cool here!"

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Never heard a note by the Seahorses, but I'm choosing them all the same.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 4 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't Alex. They suck ass.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, the Seahorses were just like the Stone Roses except without all the rigorous modernism, regular engagement with cutting edge technology and arrangements and metrosexual appeal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And without the tunes, charisma and dummer.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Drummer.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Could work both ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just so tired of the diefication (sp?) of Tupac Shakur, that I felt compelled to choose the SeaHorses.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Seahorses suck ass.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh you asshole.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I hate my favourite band's guitarist's next band even fucking more.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"So Westenberg, the band doesn't want to have a photo taken, do you have any generic shots available of random people you did as light tests?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yes; here's one of a student, an anorexic woman who teaches maths, an indie fan and a software engineer."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Brilliant! $2000."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha YOU BASTARDS

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Whooda thunk The Seahorses could bring such joy, eh?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(frantic footsteps)

sorry i'm late!

alex did you mean you're tired of Tupac's defecation?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That too!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 5 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

This is seriously the only thread on the Seahorses?

!!!!!!!!!!!!

vain_bowers, Thursday, 26 February 2009 08:55 (sixteen years ago)

A couple of weeks ago, I got asked if I wanted to see Chris Helme play a solo acoustic set above a pub in Hammersmith. Despite being free, this is possibly the least appealing event I have ever been invited to.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:04 (sixteen years ago)

How many Seahorses threads did you think there would be?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:32 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, their whole arc was pre-ILM, and they were fucking awful, bar 1 b-side.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

There's a decent b-side?

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

When I lived in York Chris Helme used to do a regular 'solo acoustic with friends' night that looked like it would be the worst shit ever.

When I left York one of Shed Seven applied for my old job and didn't get it, proving I am demonstrably superior to them.

Reflex Gaffney (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:53 (sixteen years ago)

Well, not everyone can drum for Gay Dad.

(I thangyew)

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

There was a groovy bit of post-Roses Kraut-y wibble on the b-side of You Can Talk To Me that was produced by Youth, had rubbery bass and growling guitar and not very much of Chris Helme. It was OK.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

Squire's thinking doesn't become any more obvious with time: 'identify every weakness in your old band, and then hire a bunch of guys who can do only that. But worse'

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:15 (sixteen years ago)

Apparently, that "Love is the law" song was written for the Stone Roses, "Rum old slapper" and "Strap-on sally" lines in place, but Ian 'did not like it' much.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

Standing On Your Head was the only passable tune on the first album, and then only because it was nasty and presumably about Ian.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

All time classic festival performance. Note the bit when he just gives up on singing altogether.

David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)

I went to an exhibition of Squire's artwork at the ICA in London. The globe from the Seahorses' album was there in a glass case. It looked alright, but I doubt that that was what was bringing in the punters

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

Why does Squire lean so far back when he plays an opening riff or solo?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'd forgotten how grim that video was, Matt.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:36 (sixteen years ago)

Is it because that's how Jimmy Page did it xp?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

How many Seahorses threads did you think there would be?

I dunno - gotta understand that I never heard the Stone Roses (still haven't) so "Love is the Law" being on alt-rock radio was basically my only exposure to that whole world. And it seemed like the Stone Roses were this big deal, so I figured, I dunno....
