Kurt Cobain was a big Pixies fan. The question is did his band surpass one of his primary influences? I think not.

Never a huge fan of either, but the Pixies were a bajillion times more imaginative, wrote more interesting songs, had better hooks, greater album cover art and a more distinctive, original sound than Nirvana. Kim Deal was also significantly better looking that Kris Novoselic, and is probably even more so today.

It may be remembered that I am a big Nirvana fan, and I really have tried to like the Pixies. My girl is a fan, my friends are fans, I've bought the records. I've listened intently, and as background, and can't help it, they sucked.(no, they didn't suck, but I just don't like 'em.)

ive always thought that Nirvana's best record was the MTV live in new york sessions which featured a load of covers and the meat puppets. I think Nirvana were a high quality band but that most of the legend that drifts around them was born out Kobain's premature death and the time and place they hit the mainstream. The Pixies, however, musically are one of the all time greats in the league of the Beatles and Beach Boys.

Most of what the Pixies' music says to me is "hey, we are weird". I can picture Frank Black/Black Francis looking at himself in a mirror à la Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone and cowering with fright in this way. Nirvana showed me that music could be heavy and catchy at the same time, which in a roundabout way led me to Black Sabbath and their ilk.

and they would be right (although you may have trouble getting an answer from kurt). the pixies gave nirvana the tools to be nirvana.
one the other hand nirvana was a great band and it isn't fair to give so much credit to a band that influenced them.
when it comes down to it liked the pixies better - their songs covered a wider range of sounds/stiles.
nirvana was there when i was in high school but they really didn't "get me through".

That first post of mine was a joke, you know. I mean, I like Nirvana more than the Pixies (and I'm not hugely into either), but I find the constant Pixies vs. Nirvana arguments as tiring and inane as the Beatles vs. Stones shit boomers apparently spent a lot of time on. Half of it just seems to be who can be either more populist or more indie than the other side, depending on which band you like.

i finally felt like i understood my continuing love for the pixies when i read tom's "blankness"/"pop art" thesis in his b-sides review.

whereas i was 14 in 1992, and therefore nirvana are way too bound up in pimply adolescent frustration/longing/confusion and have accumlated too much baggage ala a snowball rolling down a hill (even though really they're just as "blank" as the pixies) to be able to "enjoy" now.

nirvana always reminded me of squirrel bait, a band that helped me get thru my high school years. in fact, when i first heard nevermind i got excited cuz i actually thought it was a new squirrel bait album. that was the first and last time that nirvana ever excited me. whereas, i HAD to like the pixies cuz they were on 4AD and it was in my contract to like everything i bought on 4AD just like in that song that came out on Homestead.I think it was mark arm who said in spin or somewhere that they(Mudhoney) were definitely influenced by squirrel bait's "Sun God" and that is the song that really really sounds like nirvana. plus, there are early wipers songs that really sound like nirvana music. and they did sometimes sound like the pixies. nirvana, that is. nothing wrong with that. i guess in cumulative damage though, you would have to give nirvana the nod. bad pop-punk, bad nu-metal, bad hats, bad colds, etc, etc. you can't really blame the pixies for much of that.

if I have a problem w/the Pixies (and I do like them, though I'm of the not-at-all popular opinion they got better with each album) it's that I don't hear a lot of breadth emotionally--though not necessarily musically. Well, being a huge Pixies AND Nirvana fan, I just HAD to put in my two cents worth. I don't think the two bands have much in common, really. The only song by the Pixies that really sounds anything like Nirvana is "Gigntic," and that's really only because of the soft/loud/soft dynamic. Both bands did have a knack for writing really catchy songs, though Nirvana was a bit more straightforward in their songwriting approach, while the Pixies were more quirky. Anyway, I like both bands a whole bunch and wouldn't take sides on either. Yes, I know I'm boring.

The Pixies wrote catchy songs. Unfortunately, there isn't one Pixies album that doesn't float off somewhere after about 2/3 of the way through. Actually, the songs didn’t even tighten up until they were about through with Doolittle. I’ve got a Pixies mix somewhere that beats any of their records on any terms that you’d use to judge an album. In Utero on the other hand is basically flawless. But yeah, Pavement.

You can call Pavement directionless (sort of) and without testicles - two qualities I like quite well thank you - but what do you mean by tuneless? I mean they have some great melodies 'off-kilter' as they may be. And by the time of CrookedRainx2 they had a genuine loping swing thing to 'em or something I forgot the word I was going to use. But anyway if anything is tuneless its a good chunk of Bleach, and most of Incesticide after the first 2 and discounting that other good one about brains.

Also excepting the ones on Unplugged Nivana did awful renditions of a lot of great songs. It is funny how much I like so many of the bands Kurt would name drop before he shot himself in the head much better than I like Nirvana. All thats left is some lingering nostalgia I have for the tape of Nevermind I used to like.

Whoever upthread that said Nirvana were 1/3 the Pixies, 1/3 Husker Du, and 1/3 Replacements is pretty close to getting right nirvana's influnces, I think. They were really a synthesis of all the college rock and post-punk of the 80's, with some mainstream pop/rock sensibilities thrown in. The latter combined with the former is probably what made them huge.

Admittedly this isn't so much in evidence on the later albums but on Bleach it's pretty much undeniable.

Steve Jones / Sex Pistols had a fair bit of influence on the guitar sound on Nevermind too I reckon.

about the pixies' influence on nevermind, i always thought the monkey picture on the back cover of nevermind was a tribute to bossanova (the pixies album, obv)

Well, I think everyone's tired of that particular debate, and since all living parties concerned have patched things up....what's the point in drumming it all up again?

The only good thing about the Joke supporting the Pixies is that ideally it turned a few spend-ready Pixies fans onto a superior band. Beyond that, the Pixies aren't fit to felch the cow-dung from between the treads of Killing Joke's collective Doc Martens.

I was in a bit of a pissy mood when this one came around last time and cast a tongue in cheek vote for Pavement. Not surprisingly took a bit of shit for it. Anyway, in the spirit of reconcilliation my real answer is the Pixies.

Not trying to take things off topic or anything, but I did take issue with Alex's assertion that Pavement "sucked". I'm hardly impartial in that particular debate, being a pretty big fan of that band, but it did seem a little harsh and somewhat undeserved. It's fine to not like them, most people I know don't like Pavement, but I think you'd have a pretty hard time convincing most critics as well as music fans that they sucked.

Don't take it personally, J-rock. It's just that I'm hard pressed to think of a more overrated/undertalented band than Pavement. I didn't say you couldn't listen to them, though. To each their own.
