Live Skull's 'Dusted' is pretty damn good, and I'm waiting for my Ebay copy of 'Snuffer', but what's the other stuff like? I know she only joined Live Skull part way through the band, did she appear on anything apart from those two LPs? I keep meaning to get the Uzi album ('Sleep Asylum') but never get round to it. Should I? What's it like? As for Dangerous Birds, I fear that with only an obscure single, and a couple of comp tracks, that It would be both fiendishly difficult and hellishly expensive to get my hands on any of those. Especially "Smile on Your Face" off the 'Sub Pop 100' LP (was this ever re-issued on CD?) Are they worth the effort?

I always loved Live Skull, but Come just bore me to death. Never heard Uzi or Dangerous Birds, alas.

"Positraction" by Live Skull isn't bad.

Although, Come is probably my favorite Zadek band. (Sorry Alex)

Without having any idea what they sounded like, I once saw a Come show at the Thread Waxing Space in NYC...and I simply couldn't restrain myself from yawning through the whole thing directly in front of Thalia Zedek. It was absolutely mortifying, especially she always looked so gloomy and pissed off to begin with.

I don't think I've ever heard Live Skull. Hm.

The only reason Come broke out was the cover of Eleven: Eleven: amorphously "alternative" enough to suggest grunge and shoegaze leanings, it played perfectly with the Twin Peaks aesthetic running rampant in the States.

Uzi is alright, but not nearly as radical as the lineup suggested. Basically, if you like Live Skull, you'll like Uzi. I was hoping the presence of Phil Milstein would create this cacophonous tape-loop rock hybrid, but i was disappointed in the EP. (I had bought the Uzi CD just after revelling in Milstein's "Tapeworm" LP... )

Although, it's worth looking inside the cover of the Uzi CD just to see one of the posters Phil Milstein designed for Uzi's first shows.. it's a four panel action sequence of a man striking a match against his

That's impressive for an album that came out nearly six months after Fire Walk With Me flopped in theatres.

The only reason Come broke out was ... [blah]
more likely, they were slightly successful because they were heavily promoted by matador after strong buzz on the sub pop debut single and previous bands

just a theory

I have the Dangerous Birds single. The A-side Alfa Romeo is a great bit of la la twee girl college rock and you'd be damn suprised to realize Thalia was even in that band. The other A-side, or B-side, I don't remember, Smile on Your Face features Thalia as the lead singer and sounds very Thalia-esque. The only Live Skull stuff she appears on is Dusted and Positraction as well as the Snuffer EP which may be on the Positraction CD, I can't remember. Those records are both half good, or if you REALLY like that live skull sound...all good. 5D off Dusted is some kind of genius.

I love the song "Recidivist". Have it on a comp. Is the rest of that album as good (or, "like that")?

Also (on the 12" anyway) a picture of a woman's face in the latter stages of tertiary syphilis, purporting to be Thalia's mugshot. It's not very nice.

I find the Live Skull stuff I've got a bit of a slog but Matador sent me a "Best of Thalia" promo thingy round the time of her last album, which has the rather good Dangerous Birds single on.

Hur hur "pre Come"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Pre come. Heeee heeee.

The only thing I know about any of these bands is that Come stole Codeine's drummer. Codeine was never the same. C

and didn't Chavez's drummer play for Live Skull?? Word em up. I liked Chavez.

I guess thats Post Come.

'Gently Down the Stream' has another Brokaw track "Silk City", and I guess Thalia's "New Coat" is in a similar vein, at least relative to the rest of the LP, which is worth the price of admission for the majestic "Saints Around My Neck" alone. There's also another couple of Brokaw vocals "Secret Number" and "Shoot Me First" on Come's penultimate album 'Near Life Experience' which has many detractors, but don't listen to them because it really is fantastic, especially if noise isn't really your bag. In particular it doesn't suffer from over-lengthiness, Come's achilles heel. In fact you should buy both of these records as Come are great and neither are likely to trouble your wallet beyond four or five quid/bucks a piece and quite possibly less. Happy listening.

BTW Chris Brokaw put out an acoustic CD, 'Wandering As Water' on Return To Sender (c/o Normal Records) which includes amongst other songs, "Redecivist" and "Shoot Me First" as well as his version of "German Song," originally a Thalia vocal. Hope this helps.

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, seem to remember the Brokaw record before that being quite nice, in a clanging minor chord way, but I can't remember what it's actually called. It has a red cover with sort of black lines on it and it's under my television.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Red Cities, his first solo one. I think Wandering as Water is the new one, I haven't heard it yet.

and didn't Chavez's drummer play for Live Skull?? Word em up. I liked Chavez

That particular drummer was James Lo, he was also playing w/ Will Oldham's touring band recently-ish.

FWIW Eleven:Eleven is still one of my favourite ever albums, I reckon there's something about the way the guitars are arranged so those songs just totally take off in a way that certain shoegaze fucks could only dream of. Definitely repays repeat listens though, I can imagine they would seem sorta impenetrable live if you didn't have a full grasp on what was going on. I dunno.

Live Skull-wise, Snuffer is a pretty good pre-quel to it, I'm thinking of songs like 'Step' in particular. That Uzi record is just so-so, but 'Gabrielle' is a great song.
