The Bolshoi

I searched but found hardly any mention here of this not very prolific 80's gothy-pop band. I downloaded a few songs of theirs that are just wonderful. Away, Master of the World, Please, Books on the Bonfire and Foxes are the songs I know and I love em.

The trouble is all reviews conflict on what's the best CD to get. The best-of comp. gets either love, for showing underrated obscure selections and b-sides, or hate for serving the albums badly and substituting inferior versions. Some say the Friends/Giants CD is best for their most gothy-rocking stuff, while Lindy's party is overproduced 80's pop that takes away their edge. Others say Lindy's party has the best songwriting while the older stuff is thin and weak. Well that covers everything. Please say your opinions, thankya much.

awww, books on the bonfire. i used to think that song was so cool. now i'm gonna have to find a copy. i think you could buy their entire output on vinyl for 5 bucks if you want to go that route.

Get it all - 3 cds in total, classic throughout.

I prefer Giants and Friends personally. 'Happy Boy' was the first song of theirs I heard, it's fucking great. Lindy's Party has some of the worst songs I've ever heard on it, I really don't know what they were thinking when they made that album. And eeek, that cover...

Hey, I stumbled on the video for 'Away' recently. It's got Trevor Tanner hamming it rather fabulously in it, like some sort of bastard cross between Robert Smith and a court fool. But in a good way, obviously... the man should've been a star.

I remember picking up Friends on the strength of "Away," but losing enthusiasm for it swiftly.

Yep, another vote for Giants and Friends. Pulled out the latter recently after finding it used, and the production definitely dates it, but if you have any love for that era and can get beyond the sound, it's fun.

"Sunday Morning" was a bit of a hit - I remember seeing it a number of times on 120 Minutes.

Is that the video linked to above, or something else?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

yep it's the same, didn't check thread - I'm currently going on an 80s music nostalgia trip on youtube.

I am amazed of the artists they have on there, new rare videos being added each day.

It's a shame it's not live footage. Cut quite a dash on stage did old Trevor.

The Bolshoi achieved number 1 status in Spain, I never understand why they didn't achieve daytime radio airplay status in the UK.

I blame the planks at Radio 1 ! DLT, Simon Bates, Steve Wright and the backroom managament prats

their album is on Spotify; I will probably listen to it tomorrow

Oh which one? They had two albums (Friends is alright and probably a good place to start, Lindy's Party is shit), a mini album (Giant - 'Happy Boy' is still my favourite song of theirs) and there's a best-of too.

oh ha they have a bunch of stuff on there! I only noticed Friends but everything you mentioned is there (only instead of Giant it's Bigger Giants and looks like it's actually a full album)

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

Ah okay, looks like they padded Giants out. That was their first one btw, ignore the date that Spotify give it.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

maybe that was a re-release date with the extra tracks...?
