Deerhoof- Milk Man

In the year-end issue of Wire there's a review of a new Deerhoof album called Milk Man. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this- a release date or what it sounds like. I can't find anything about it at the Kill Rock Stars or 5RC websites. The Wire review said there are a lot more of an emphasis on keyboards this time which excites me since I thought that's what was missing from Apple O'.

A friend of mine replaced some guy in Deerhoof in a band he was in before he moved to San Fran and joined Deerhoof. He says Deerhoof does have an album done for early 2004....I would assume it would be on KRS....He didn't say anything about the style/direction.

"The omni-present Greg Saunier, drummer for the fantastic Deerhoof (as well as having his hand tons of other projects (e.g., the Curtains, Nervous Cop)), allowed us to bother him with some questions of utmost importance to members of the UN. Deerhoof just finished recording their new album, Milk Man, that will be released in the Spring....."

"What is on the horizon for Deerhoof?

We have several releases coming out, like a split single with our friends, K.I.T. In March we will release our new CD, which is called "Milk Man". We just sent off the finished master and artwork yesterday, which is why I'm getting to your interview now!"

"Como são feitas as gravações? A banda passa muito tempo no estúdio/casa?
Nós tentamos de tudo. Não passamos muito tempo nos estúdios de gravação porque são muito caros. Mas a maioria das músicas do Apple O’ foram gravadas no estúdio, em uma tarde. Nós mixamos em casa em um computador, e fazemos isso MUITO devagar. Estamos gravando o próximo álbum em casa.

Que álbum?
Estamos no meio da gravação agora. Será chamado "Milk Man" e sai no início de 2004.

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"How are made the writings? The band passes much time in estúdio/casa?

We try of everything. We do not pass much time in the writing studios because they are very expensive. But the majority of musics of the Apple? they had been recorded in the studio, one afternoon. We mixamos in house in a computer, and VERY make this to devagar. We are recording the next album in house.

That album?

We are in the way of the writing now. "Milk Man" will be called and leaves in the beginning of 2004.

Musics are equal to the living creature?

They sound very different, not only only to the living creature but of show in show. Musics are simple of form that can be touched in different ways. Space exists surprises to happen in palco. It is therefore that we never tire to touch our musics."

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard it -- its fantastic. Yeah, not as much in the surging, anthemic guitar figures, though there is plenty of great sideways gtr riffage. It's not keyboard dominated, but they are definitely more present. Even moments of Sgt. Pepperisms and definitely a few proggy flights with the keyboard (though not enough to take away from the playfulness/primitiveness of the band). It seems like even more experimentation in the songs and textures and lots of variety. Maybe now the Who comparisons will stop! "C" is on here seemingly re-recorded and a couple familiar tunes from their more recent live shows, though sounding a bit different than how I remember them live in terms of guitars being replaced by "la la's", added elements and such.

I am giddy with excitement about this!
LOVE the 'hoof!

four weeks pass...
Any $L$K'ers wanna help me out? I dearly love this band...

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
bump.

Promos have been sent out to interested (and uninterested) parties, first listens have begun. Initial thoughts on _Milk Man_?

Nick Sylvester, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it's chunky and riffy, and slightly annoying in some places. the drumming as always is very interesting.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

those are my "initial thoughts" by the way. i only listened once, and i was in the shower thinking about things other than deerhoof.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the record. It's more experimental/complex then "Apple O'", yet the overall sound is more sparse and clean sounding. The playful and child-like Deerhoof melodies are still there, but they all have a peculiar undercurrent of meloncholy in them. It makes for an interesting listen, although it took a couple of plays to sink in.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was disappointed in it. There are two or three substantial songs (the title track and track three, "Deseperecere") but the rest sound like they were written and recorded in an afternoon.

tyler (tyler), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon it's their best to date - thought Apple O wasn't quite as consistent as Reveille, but for me Milk Man eclipses them both. The album changes dynamic a lot, and does take a few listens, but even the 'dog on the sidewalk' track is now a favourite. That and the organ led ballad towards the end. Beautiful. And it's getting a proper European release as well. All very exciting.

pitwithspikes, Thursday, 26 February 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't sure I would but I like this a lot. reminds me of quickspace chopped and not put back together again. or a more meaty playful tempo-changing bearsuit.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the artwork is pretty funny.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard it yet. I hope they're selling it tomorrow at the show.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

tomorrow's la show at the echo is early--doors at 7:00, then morris tepper solo (who's worth seeing if you're me), then deerhoof. over by 10:00. i am very excited.

dan (dan), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it is quite tits (milk man)

russignon, Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so glad that show was out at 9:30. Last time they were in town we saw them at the Derby and they were like 5th and went on at 12 AM. It was ridiculous. Anyways, great show. Album is really great. Not as punchy and ferocious as their live versions of these tracks but I think that that goes for every Deerhoof song.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 5 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
so good!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 February 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to take this thread as a sign that i should finally get off my Deerhoof-loving ass and check this out... But how could it be better than Apple O'?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

its not better, just...different.
they've just finished a japanese language album & are starting on a new Kill Rock Stars cd to be released in the autumn. oh and don't forget the free live album available through their website.
i heart hoof.

zappi (joni), Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it think its tits (deerhoof)

bryar, Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This album is all well and good but the track I always go back to is that mental instrumental that sounds like SIm City.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 20 February 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

you think that sounds like Sim City? There's a track on Moon Safari that they seriously must have just stolen from the game's soundtrack haha

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

Just picked up a really nice re-release of this on ATP records - 180 gram white vinyl and all that. They're playing the album in its entirety on Friday in London, but I can't make it... Bought this to make up for it.

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

This is the only Deerhoof I've really listened to properly, and it's supposed to be a bit of a misfire from what I understand? The bonkers instrumental witht he really long name is one of my favourite all time tunes though.

la tristessa demerera (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

milkman isn't a misfire by any measure. i think it's one of their best albums, maybe my single favorite. it's certainly their proggiest, lacking the sugar buzzed, mile-a-minute brevity of apple O, reveille, but the songwriting is solid all the way through. even the weirdest and harshest tracks are catchy as hell. plus "new sneakers!"

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's one of their best albums, maybe my single favorite

Dominique, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah wouldn't consider it a misfire either, but it's definitely their loudest and tightest. probably their best.
