are COACHWHIPS really as good live as they say?

because the records are very, very disappointing after the hype in certain circles. But everyone tellms: see em live, it's a whole different ballpark. Opinions?

stinkbugs, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah they play here in a few hours, so lemme know quick if its worth me going down there.

stinkbugs, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked pink and brown better

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and ZIEGENBOCK KOPF even

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

not "even" dude! That ZK cd rules! Can't imagine it live tho...

stinkbugs, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

their videos are the best. live, it was just all too incredibly loud and too much strobe light.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

live > records... but your mileage may vary. depends on the venue/crowd/state of intoxication (both yours and the bands). if you've got nothin better to do, go.

ian j0hnson, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

go. GO!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, coachwhips are fun if beer is flying around the room and people are fucking. then again i can't imagine them any other way.

mosurock (mosurock), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty boring band, actually. pink and brown were much better. dwyer is wasting his talent in a major way, sucked into the vortex of dumb jokes and boredom inducing non shock causing shock. then again, maybe im just bitter because they wormed their way into the wrangler brutes show line up. the wrangler brutes are freaking great.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

wrangler brutes make me remember when hardcore wasn't only for stupid people. like 1993-1997 maybe?

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they were'nt that good live...its just sped up blues rock with one of those bob log mics, didn't see what the fuss all about.
blah

stinkbugs, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
jack cole and db OTM. pink/brown nostalgiasts aside, there is nothing driving this band aside from pedigree and regional hype.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

what's their pedigree?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i did think they were great live, but the record stinks. they're no Black Lips!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

see the pink+brown refs upthread.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

They're the only plausibly decent band coming to Rochester for a long, long time.

That said, I thought they were pretty sick last time I saw them, but I was really fucking drunk.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

HIJON!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Any idea who they're touring with this spring?

I also missed LYRES playing here. WTF?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and there's some band named after some Drive Like Jehu song playing here.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i saw them last week opening for panthers... unfortunately.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it a white belt sweat shop?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

not nearly a fraction as bad as the deerhoof/flying luttenbachers the night before. i left w/o getting in. i think jaX0n suffered through that.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

coachwhips are playing with the seconds in nyc, but i'm not sure if the latter are on the whole east coast tour.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

^ hahahaha

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that well-dressed kid he's making fun of is named Raoul, he's from SD... he's at all the shows.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the luttenbachers/ deerhoof show was pretty whatever. i was expecting first band to be Crack: WAR, but was some whatever indie/math band. i sometimes liked his faux-david byrne singing, but most of it was just long repetitive jams that went nowhere.

i think i'm just totally not into guitar/indie/yada bands anymore but deerhoof really didn't impress me. i've seen them once before in a little coffee shop and it was totally fun, but this time they just seemed way more disjointed and sloppy. their drummer's pretty fun though. very funky.

that Raoul guy fucking blows. i was up near the front and he creeped me the fuck out. i wish i could see his picture on that livejournal site. he was wearing weird ass 18th century clothes. frills and velvet and shit. and the whole time he was vogueing and miming the show. i couldn't keep my eyes off him because he was two people in front of me. i wanted to throw my gum at him. i felt bad for the bands. i'm sure he made it hard for them to concentrate.

and the luttenbachers. man i wanted to like them so bad. they're the reason i went to the show. i really dig their last brutal-prog magma on bad speed album but i've never heard any of their other stuff. this was just whatever jammy noise. their bass player was sooo awesome though. he just stared out into the audience like he wasn't playing a show, super emotionless. then every once in a while he'd just scream FUCK! pretty funny.

oh, and to bring this thread full circle, John Dwyer of the Coachwhips was at the show. but what's new, he's at every show.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i know why you're confused about Crack (btw, is Eric moving to NYC? i heard about some farewell show...?)

Matt, the dude(-ish?) who was taking tix has a booking co. named "Crackwhore". He used to book Kimo's prior to the noise laws and then more recently The Curve.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

JON WILLIAMS / IAN JOHNSON / JAX0N:

Imagine how annoying this guy Raoul is made out to be. Now multiply him x 5 and you have Hair Police totally trying to ruin Neon Hunk and Mammal and Crack:WAR's sets two years ago in Oakland on the Freedom From tour.

That plus the fact that their set earlier that evening was uninspired wank completely turned me off to them. They made up for it a little the next night but they made Raoul seem like a wallflower.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

>luttenbachers/ deerhoof

I've been blown away by deerhoof live many many times. I agree they seemed a little tired & loose that night.

My favorite is still probably the 99 tip top show, a 15 minute version of 'come see the duck' with blevin blectum on sampler in 99, but last year's bottom of the hill set left me close to speechless.

Coachwhips are okay sometimes. It's music for a crowded sweaty basement or garage. The NYE 2003 show was good, but was followed immediately by the Pink and Brown reunion show. Which was something to behold.

(Jon L), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite deerhoof show was the era between reveille & apple o when they played the seventh day adventist church in berkeley named the ramp: [review]

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Ramp. I hope they get their permit back. It really is the rec room basement of a church, with the reading room in back open, cookie bar staffed by 15 year olds. I missed the Deerhoof/Soul Junk show but saw the Curtains & Why? show. At one point one of Why?'s songs rhymed something with 'fuck' and I think I heard a bunch of the kids gasp audibly.

(Jon L), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw coachwhips & deerhoof on halloween '02 in providence. also: hella, la machine, pleasurehorse and some fruity indie rock bands (HOT HOT HEAT played first or second.)

people at shows suck. new york people are unfriendly or creepy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
interesting
