Nice to see The Mover get a look in there.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, you're probably trying to make a point, but there was really NOTHING on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below you liked?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is so gonna include Pitman's "Twat Farm Revisited"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray! Someone else mentioned A.R.E. Weapons in their end-of-year roundup!

Still, no Wayne Wonder?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

no, I'm not trying to make a point

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

peckham rye, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee's '03, actually, if we go by the proper XL release date.

not that it matters

Well, I think it does, actually!

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

mine's on this thread:
The All New Best Singles 2003 List Thread

(some overlaps but I swear I only saw the Seattle Weekly 2003 thread afterwards)

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm working on a C700 Go! '03 that includes a few crossover picks (and "oh wow I have never heard of this, dear lord this is good" tracks) from Matos' mix (and Fred Solinger's) but will also include no small amount of fucking weird shit -- Dave Chappelle's "Fisticuffs" skit, Majesticons, the Neal Pollack Invasion's "Racism Number 5" aka Best Minutemen Parody Ever in an Admittedly Undercrowded Field -- as well as the Darkness, who could also be called fucking weird shit (but they are also grebt).

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 9 January 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This looks great! I'm sorry to be an idiot and I'm sure this is explained elsewhere, but what does "C700" mean?

dylan (dylan), Friday, 9 January 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"cassette", oddly.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

700 = 700MB on a CD-R

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure I remember C90s and all that, but I still don't get precisely what format these mixes exist in. It must involve computers.

Michaelangelo: I'm surprised that Luomo didn't make the cut, though I'm sure it wasn't a slight. I've come to rather like that album, thanks to your recommendation.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

track 73 dylan

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 9 January 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 9 January 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos----no, I'm not trying to make a point

Haha fuckin bollocks you weren't

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, I see it. 73.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

how about the A-Frames?

Also, maybe Us by Malkmus + Jicks (although I know that Matos is not a fan)...

Also, maybe something by Freeway....

Also, Can't Stop, Won't Stop by Young Gunz

I like this list......but isn't it a hanging offense on ILM to do a 2003 wrap up and not have a Ying Yang Twins song? ; )

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

He included Freeway, even though "What We Do" is technically late '02 (and is also the track I will replace the 7L and Esoteric track with on my revised C700 '02 someday).

Also, I am going to do this so DON'T STEAL IT PLZ, a double-whammy of T. Raumschmiere's "Monstertruckdriver" and Goldfrapp's "Train" will be U&K.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

my bad.

okay...here's my rocafella pick then - Through the Wire by Kanye West. (does that count or do we have to put it in 04 because of the album)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

for the second and last time, NO I WAS NOT MAKING A POINT. I made this in early December and hadn't heard the OutKast enough to decide whether anything from there belonged on it. I don't care for "Hey Ya!" and I wound up not liking the record(s) near as much as I'd prefer (I specifically called Speakerboxxx/The Love Below the most overrated double CD since The Fragile in my year-end essay that accompanied this in the Weekly--or is that the other way around?), so maybe if I hadn't put anything from it on NOW I might be "making a point," or maybe I'd just be responding honestly to a record that doesn't move me very much.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

also, the reason this is "extremely non-definitive" is that (a) I made it a month ago so I could include it with the year-end issue of the weekly ("it" = the list, not the disc itself), (b) I know, KNOW, I missed tons of stuff (just acquired Ludacris, James Carter, and Timbaland & Magoo, for instance, and there's loads of '03 stuff I haven't even cracked) because (c) I spent less time paying attention to newly-released music in 2003 than in any year since I was a teenager. ('92, maybe, when I was 17.) this is due to personal circumstances--uprooting my life, moving cross-country, taking a new job that involved a LOT more work than I'd anticipated, then writing a book about a 16-year-old album, and doing a lot less regular reviewing than I'm used to--interfering with my usual keeping-on-top-of-shit habits big-time.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, I am now in love with the New Pornographers song on this! Is the rest of the album as good, or was this a fluke track?

lyra (lyra), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

damn near all of it, yes. the ones that aren't are merely really really really good.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also haha M@tt, I haven't any Ying Yang Twinz because none of the friggin' records by them I've been sent can be played on my computer nor turned to MP3s! and since that's how I listen to music . . . oh well.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Radio 4 thang's from last year, maybe try the Chromeo or UNKLE mixes instead.

And no 'Being Nobody' or 'Finest Dreams' clearly* invalidates this comp.

*Clearly meaning that I'm otherwise pretty cool with this, esp. cause I can't do my own and damn sure want to.
