Taking sides: Underground Resistance vs Red Planet.

second wave detroit bizness. i know they crossover to a large extent, its a search and destroy really i suppose.

in the UR corner:---

World2World - Amazon. breakbeat techno jazz, but not wanky or shit. militant and pacific.

and in the Red (planet) corner

Red Planet 2 - Star dancer. one of the greatest singles of all time (well, it made my ILM top 40 in that poll anyway). those cascading, um, things, are just wonderful.

when this used to get played out in clubs in the UK all the time, i remember people were all, like, this ain't mike banks/red planet, because it was too accessible and pop, no austerity here baby.

In smallfish they got star dancer t-shirts, but with this daft figure on leaning over the red planet. what the fuck? i would have worn that.

Hurrah!! Underground Resistance win it, although 'Stardancer' is indeed mega-mega (as is the amazing 'Journey to the Martian Polar Cap'). I can't find that bloody Red Planet compilation anywhere, curse the gods!

Anyway for U.R.

Search:

- Seawolf. One of the great rave tunes. Sleek and hard.

- Afro-Germanic. Great electro track.

- Mi Razza. Tough minimal track with nagging Mi Razza-razza chant.

- Jupiter Jazz. Pure joy, late rave classic.

- Revoltion For Change. One of the great techno albums, not a weak track on it, great range from minimal rave tracks to 5 o'clock dream tracks.

- Rings of Saturn and Atlantis. Two other great albums.

also on UR:

* "The Aztec Mystic" - DJ Rolando

I think Red Planet 9 is pretty damn good. It IS poppy... strings and stuff, a shimmy-shimmy shake that UR seems uninterested in.

I am embarrassed to record that this is the first time I realized the two labels were in fact two different labels. I thought they were the same.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Codebreaker/Hi-tech Jazz/Journey Of The Dragon are all tracks worth looking into.

so this is the ILM electronic music ghetto, I think there are about 4 of us who like dance music. :)

Michael Taylor, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U.R. has it for me, more diverse, their influence reaches further. The debt IDM labels and microgenres owe U.R. isn't recognised, their inspiration attributed to acid house instead (eg Warp Classics Compilation.)

Try 'soulseek' for downloading these tracks, a P2P network that specializes in Electronic music.

K-reg, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, i didn't realise there was a Red Planet compilation CD, but, after a look around, i found it here

i only own RedPlanet2, so may invest in a copy of this myself too

gareth, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers, so it's still in print. I only have the RP6 double pack so I must have the comp.

Omar, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, who was it?

i found the red planet/martian compilation cd last week on berwick st, but didn't have any money. went back next day and it had gone. damn! was it one of you?

gareth, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
i'll look out for RP9 then. i had forgotten how good Afro-Germanic is, although the rest of that particular UR comp is a bit dry. Star Dancer is still the best thing ever

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Galaxy to Galaxy - the most beautiful, emotive, otherworldly record I have ever heard

Spreadlove, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

search (other than those already mentioned): UR - "jaguar" aztec mystic (one of the most perfectly realised pieces of music EVAH); "acid rain ep"; "final frontier"; "city of fear"; "aztlan"/"day star rising"; "soul saver" (it's on that intergalactic, er, something lp - what is that called?); "amazon" (also check the 4 hero remix); the awesome "inspiration"/"transmission" double: etc. etc.

red planet favourite at the mo is the underrated "skypainter", also check "firekeeper". oh, and i've got the comp - 'kin ace.

destroy: NOTHING! HEATHENS! seriously, UR have been at the top of the game for over a decade with perhaps the most defined ethical, musical and philosophical vision of any music label i can think off.

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, it was a 'taking sides' not a 's+d'. red planet, i've always thought as coming under the same UR/submerge umbrella. it's all the same thing, you can't take sides.

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been hitting the ol' U.R. lately thanks to the amazing Inspiration.

For the hard-as-nails approach: Death Star.
For the melancholic side: Final Frontier.

Also came to realize that Revolution For Change must be my favorite album of all time.

Omar, Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought Red Planet WAS Underground Resistance...if not who did produced it and surely they must be linked

blueski, Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

see above...(red planet is 'the martian' aka gary, er, can't remember.

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Sex in Zero Gravity is no slouch either.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

it's Will, something. Will Thomas (?). (do you care?)

michael w., Friday, 6 September 2002 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Transition on Underground Resistance, think it's unknown artist, is absolutely amazing.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

red planet = mike banks + guests sometimes

destroy - the punisher
pirahna
the fury

ALL the rest are sacrosanct.

stirmonster, Monday, 9 September 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and 'transition' is banks.

stirmonster, Monday, 9 September 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i finally found the red planet compilation today!! i was in smallfish and it was just sitting there, so i bought it. it has a truly horrendous sleeve, and the back sleeve looks like some prog monstrosity - i wanted it to have the red and black minimalism of the 12s. anyway, i too had always assumed it to be mike banks, but the credit on the back of the compilation actually says Will Thomas, i'd never heard this name before today...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

michael w., Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

...about 4 posts. ;)

michael w., Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

actually , really been digging Journey To The Martian Polar Cap recently. its not as obvious as star dancer but i really like, its kind of empty. i was playing it and the tv was on with the sound turned down, and they were capturing that al qaeda suspect in karachi, and the track seemed to go really well with the visuals (maybe a link with UR operative/agent/cell chic?)

it just ocurred to me that Cosmic Movement is not on the comp, and as much of the comp is a bit iffy, that surprises me, this track should be on there too

maybe i'll put the cosmic movement mp3 up also, as that isnt on the redplanet comp

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 25 June 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

That 12" is either still in print, extensively bootlegged, or just around, but I see it a lot. Jupiter Jazz and Jeff Mills Changes of Life had a HUGE impact on me, though I've never gotten a copy of Changes...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 25 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You know it's come to this: I don't buy any techno any more, any techno at all, but if Mike Banks is on it, I buy it, whatever it is.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it is in print, submerge just repressed it. It was available via mail-order as of the DEMF.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a special place where i can get the red planet records new or do i have to consort with dirty used vinyl dealers from japan (surprisingly, best prices i've found so far)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

or a special place where they are used but affordable and not G+

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

http://hardwax.com/label/red-planet/

a (rslvd), Friday, 10 November 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

not all of them in stock at the moment, but its best to get any UR related material straight from the source:

http://www.submerge.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=RedPlanet

submerge is one of the best places for mailorder. i love ordering from them.

pipecock (pipecock), Saturday, 11 November 2006 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

neither hardwax nor submerge have the red planets i want (stardancer, sex in zero gravity, sunchaser). believe me, those were the first places i looked.

eMusic has added some titles from both; more to come

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

well i already have the mp3s... those are free, don't you know?

(Matos works for eMusic, lfam)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 12 November 2006 06:25 (nineteen years ago)

i think he's a fine writer, but it still doesn't mean i'm going to pay for something in a format i don't want. djing with mp3s is too hard on free/handbuilt software

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

I don't work for eMusic anymore, Michael.
