New album coming out this year. I saw them in Chicago a year or so ago, but don't recall much new stuff -- anyone care to comment?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I speak for quite a few people when I say Meh.

Stupid (Stupid), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I speak for people who aren't Stupid (the poster, or the mental state) when I say awesome.

Michael Patrick Brady (Michael Patrick Brady), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my forehead itches.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

who's even on matador anymore? is it jega, chavez, and mission of burma. is that it? or is it two lone swordsman, run on and pavement. i haven't been paying attention.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you have dandruff, Ned.

The answer to Scott's query is - Klymaxx, Berlin, Flock of Seagulls.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahem, Mogwai, Aereogramme, Arab Strap, Techno Animal and Interpol are on Matador.

Stupid (Stupid), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't Burmakitty and Aja be all over this thread like white on rice by now?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty Girls Make Graves and Dizzee Rascal are on Matador.

I bet Interpol are their best seller since Crooked Rain by Pavement.

I am super-excited/super-scared about the Mission of Burma reunion.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

cat power, new pornographers, yo la tengo also on matador.

how many original members are in this incarnation of mission of burma?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't say for sure, but I imagine it'll be the reunion lineup (Miller, Prescott & Conley w/ Bob Weston on the PLAY button).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them in concert last year....It is all the original members onstage, but Martin Swope (the mixer/tape loop/sound effect guy) is not involved. Live, his spot was filled by Bob Weston of Shellac (but I'm not sure if he is on the record or producing)....they did all old stuff. I read that all the three originals are writing songs for the new thing.

They were amazing live and they are my favorite band ever.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Judging from Burmakitty's photos I was standing right next to her in Northampton. But I degress...Good news. Matt don't be scared. The live show was killer! The new songs seemed to expand on what was started with VS. When will the advance copies come!?!?!?

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

When' it comes to reunions, that's when I reach for my revolver...ha ha I'm so clever!!!!

but seriously this is pretty cool news. I hope the album is good.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Straight from Gerard's mouth

The new album, as yet untitled, is being recorded at Boston's Q-Division studios, engineered by Bob Weston with assistance from Rick Harte. Miller, Conley, and Prescott all share songwriting and production duties, and many of the new songs have been unveiled at recent shows.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Weston of Shellac

Prior to Shellac, Bob Weston was the bass player for Peter Prescott's Volcano Suns....or at least on their final record, Career in Rock (produced by Alibini).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(hahahahahah) (xpost to nicole)

Anyway, a reunited Burma on Matador, regardless of the promise of the new material, is quite unsurprising. I mean, who else would they sign with? Warp? Jade Tree? Darla? SST? Thrill Jockey?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they've been "reunited' for years now. glad to see them on matador

kephm, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The third Television alb is really gd.

When I saw 'em at ATP a cpl of years back, they played one new Roger Millerish song and one new Clint Conleyish song, both of which were not noticeably inferior to their past gooduns but not greatuns

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, a reunited Burma on Matador, regardless of the promise of the new material, is quite unsurprising. I mean, who else would they sign with?

Ace of Hearts? Rykodisc? Fenway?

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

CMC International

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this is weird since everything I'd heard from Matador was that they'd lost a lot of money on people last year (Mary Timony for one) and couldn't afford any gambles, hence, their likely NOT signing American Music Club this year; I can't see the Mission of Burma album doing much better than an AMC record, but maybe.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't talk about the band!! Doing so summons.... THEM.

Dan I., Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno I think MoB has more of a strong cult following with postpunk type kiddies....there were lots of youngsters at the show I was at....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

They were all 12.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

reverse that: 21. it was an ID show. Still I was surprised that there were nearly as many kids that looked 21 as there were old timers or late 20s/early 30s gen x types like myself.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They were amazing live and they are my favorite band ever.

Exactly. Can't wait for this!

Ixnay on the nway, itchBay.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They may be on to something. The saying goes that a band has twenty odd years of living to write their first album and only six months to come up with the follow up.

Mission of Burma may be the first band to test waiting twenty odd years before recording their second studio album.

earlnash, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect this is a dreadful x-post, but...

"Mission of Burma will be performing January 17 in New York City at Irving Plaza, in March at the SXSW convention in Austin, and in April at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Camber Sands. Many more North American and European dates will follow upon release and throughout 2004."

I would have thought the more likely date for ATP would have been Weekend 1 i.e. the one Bob Weston is already at - only that's in March...

Sorry, just grumpy at the continuing failure to see bands listed for W1, and cool bands being listed for W2...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

How odd. We were just discussing this same thing via the electronic mail (although I disagreed, more or less). Maybe Malkmus is inviting his new labelmates.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Could be promising if they get Conley to do most of the writing. He was the one who wrote the actual "songs", i.e. with actual "tunes".

Scott Bloomfield, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm kind of surprised that they're planning on "many more" tour dates--i guess roger miller is pretty comfortable with the stage setup? it was a kind of strange thing to see on stage in chicago in 2002 (glassed in drums & a big set of headphones on him) but it really was a great show. i'm keeping low expectations for the new album based on my reaction to their solo material but am also prepared to be surprised..

andrew s, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I once would have seconded the statement re: Conely writing all the actual "tunes" but, man, these days Mission Of Burma is one of the few bands I'll listen to just ANYTHING by. I recently reappraised those outtakes CDs, assuming I'd want to chuck them, and they're great. Arguably I should worry this reunion's gonna taint their previous glory or whatever but FUCK IT, I'm excited.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Miller has gotten more tune oriented over the years (see: No Man), and Conley's Consonant is, from time to time, as good as his MoB output.

I'm optimistic.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the first Consonant album sooo much. Johnny Fever OTM. I was a little disappointed with Love and Affliction but it was still solid....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

woah, I'd never even HEARD of Consonant. Must find!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing I'm curious about is whether the poet Holly Anderson is working with Conley for the new MoB album....most of the Consonant stuff (at least half or more) featured lyrics that were adapted from her poems....

anthony, consonant is on fenway records, I think they have a website...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Right-o! Love and Affliction left me a little cold, but the good songs were really good. 2002's self-titled was my fave of that year, though (I just never finished compiling a list).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

here's the site for those interested in consonant.

http://www.fenwayrecordings.com/home.html

Pure Dumb Joy made the second album for me....but there were too many that were kinda dull....I like the s/t first one to a scary degree. I still listen to it all the time. One of the most graceful "comeback records" for an indie type superstar ever.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Pure Dumb Joy made the second album for me....but there were too many that were kinda dull

Agreed. "Pure Dumb Joy" is fantastic, "Cauldron" was alright. I was waiting for some more rocking out.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Consonant album took a LONG time to grow on me - outside of "John Coltrane's My Favorite Things", it didn't immediately click. Then I just started playing it over & over & over. Same thing happened w/ _Love & Affection_, but in a smaller time frame - that is, it didn't take as long for me to "get it". I like that it's more pensive & smoldering, & I luv luv luv the title track.

There's an mp3 at the Matador site.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 27 February 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw that Irving Plaza show. They were good. Irving Plaza is a sucky venue IMHO (weird acoustic area off to the side, bad beer selection, clearchannel affiliate, bad beer selection) but MOB was still very, very good.

subgenius (subgenius), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason the first time I listened to the mp3 I thought it was just random noise and shoutalongs, but the second time around it totally coheres. Nice.
