roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Describe! Please! I haven't been allowing myself to download all these leaked albums, I'm waiting to hear them... Liars, Mod. Mouse, Walkmen, Hold Steady... now Hella. Does anything sound like "Biblical Violence," which is one of the best songs ever?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the hella's kinda disappointing, actually. not melodic enuf! they wanna be lightning bolt and lightning bolt wants to be hella! wtf?!?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So far, I get the idea that it's not as good as the previous EP or previous album (or any of the three Lightning Bolt albums, for that matter); in fact, so far as I can tell, it's not catchy at all....

chuck, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Title? Tracklist? Does it sound like the post-Hold Your Horse Is releases (Falam Dynasty, Total Bugs Bunny on Wild Bass), or is it going in a whole different direction?

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like the bitches ain't shit but good people ep mixed with total bugs bunny. only not near as melodic. the first five seconds of the record (a touchtone phone-guitar duet) are the best. the album's called the devil isn't red.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a good sign. Everything since Hold Your Horse Is has given me the impression that the guitarist was getting bored with playing riffs and wanted to do more stompboxy noise stuff— IMHO, exactly the wrong direction to go in.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 8 January 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hella's inability to embrace their love of prog will be their downfall.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yall are crazy. Then again, I can listen to Zach Hill play drums all day. I'm a sucker for killer technical drumming, I guess. But I really like the new album.

Search the live side of their split CD with some band whose name escapes me at the moment - that one is fantastic

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dilute. Both "sides" of that split CD are totally freaking killer.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 8 January 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, dilute are great. maybe more reason not to listen to hella??

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if hella were on load, you'd be blowing them nonstop ian.

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hella should just move to brooklyn already.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

NOT TRUE, DEAN.

there are bands on load I don't like--neon hunk, for instance, bore the shit out of me.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So am I the only person who thought that *Hold Your Horse IS* sounded a LOT like the Meat Puppets circa 1981/1982 (*In a Car* and *Meat Puppets*), when they were still a spazzy no wave hardcore band?

chuck, Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! that never occurred to me. time to pull out the meat puppets records.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but hella is good
neon hunk is not good

if hella were a good providence band on load
then you'd be blowing them nonstop dont deny

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

*GOOD* being the key.

they're boring as shit live. the records don't do anything exciting for me. i'd rather listen to don caballero or the aforementioned dilute.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and yeah, my hometown pride is a little excessive. too bad the scene here has gone to shit.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

will you please take j0hn dwy3r back please?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

only if he stops being lame.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

tall order...

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

hella = boring live?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe he can just put on a pink bodysuit and pretend? hell; i'm leaving providence in three days for like.. five months, so i don't give a fuck. tell him he can live with Jolly & the guys from the white mice.

yancey-- YES. I have no interest in watching good musicians be good musicians if they're just going to stand there and noodlenoddleneenernoodle.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-b-b-but did you even SEE zach?!?!? that's just standing there???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

sitting?

they played a few years ago on halloween and dressed up like pink&brown. it was kind of amusing, and they weren't /bad/ but just really uninteresting to watch and listen to. HEY, I'M GLAD THEY CAN PLAY REALLY WELL, BUT IF THEY'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT AWESOME, THEY CAN CHOKE ON MY WANG.

but i haven't heard the new album, and am not opposed to it being good. but my past experiences with hella haven't been that great.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hella has moments -- but they are few and far between and usually smothered by their technical skill and the absence of any emotion or heart . the bugs bunny ep is probably the best thing they've done.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

So am I the only person who thought that *Hold Your Horse IS* sounded a LOT like the Meat Puppets circa 1981/1982 (*In a Car* and *Meat Puppets*), when they were still a spazzy no wave hardcore band?

Nope. It was the only reason I liked Hella more than Lightning Bolt. Except neither band member does that "Meeeeww meeew meewwwwww bRAAAAAAAAAARRRRGH!" type vocals that Kurt did back in the day, sadly.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the new Hella LP is pretty good - main difference is that the melodies are more introverted and are all in minor keys. I guess this would explain why it's not grabbing people as much as "Hold Your Horse Is".

Shame there are no songtitles on par with "Bitches..." though!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You bastards!

Been waiting for this album for ages in the hope that the EPs were just random experiements in what they could do together. I then read this last night about how...

"Everything since Hold Your Horse Is has given me the impression that the guitarist was getting bored with playing riffs and wanted to do more stompboxy noise stuff"

I thought "fuck it they'll never doing anything like HYHI again, I won't wait for the album, I'll download it and be happy that I saved myself £15."

Well bollocks, from what I've heard so far, its a slightly less "poppy" or "hooky" HYHI. It *does* have recognisable guitar playing and the recording is way better than the EPs! I think prefer the recording to HYHI, kick drum isn't as big and boomy, but is a lot tighter, which is what you want with Zach's style of playing.

Overall, I think I'll love it, and I hate you all!

TomB (TomB), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i actually wound up liking their new one more than i thought i would, for whatever it's worth...

chuck, Monday, 19 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

for the record, i liked it to begin with...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it's still not as good as the other two, though.

chuck, Monday, 19 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just been listening to a smattering of mp3s on the hella site and this stuff is just great. I think I like it better than lightning bolt, as it's more rooted in prog and math rock. It reminds me a lot of A Minor Forest.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I've been to a minor place
And I can say I like its face
If I am gone and with no trace
I will be in a minor place

Adm Michel (adam michel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

First listen ... I'm not terribly thrilled. It's been on repeat for about two hours now an while I've been walking around my office and doing things, it has yet to grab me, unfortunately. I have a long drive after work so I'll give it another spin and try to get deeper into it.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am halfway through previewing the new Hella. How can you not like this? It is too good. I don't have a lot of reference point for these things cause I haven't listened to and Load bands or that many other purveyors of spazzy/math/noise/no/yes, but its very enjoyable for me. Maybe this is garbage compared to other stuff, but I don't get the Lightning Bolt comparisons cause its so clean sounding, guitar instead of bass, etc.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
caught their uk debut gig last night. pretty fucking great, even if they're maybe a bit more math rock than i'd like. where should i start with the records?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
this new hella stuff is very very intense, easily just as intense musically as the first lightning bolt record. especially zach's side of the split. fuck it's like listening to the yellow record all over again but this time better recorded with vocals and shitloads of effects. i agree with the comment about lightning going more towards hooks and hella descending into chaos.

whatever though zach still kills on the drums and i can't wait to see them live. anyone got tips on when they are coming to london in 05?

thanks

No dates booked yet, I don't think, but I think it's all being sorted in the next week or two. June-time, if I've heard correct.

Jason J, Saturday, 19 February 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep an eye on here for the UK dates: http://www.remtek.org.uk/

Al English, Saturday, 19 February 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

who has this one soulseek?

For some reason, I can't help but like these guys. Even their attempts to be all alienating and structureless on the first disc of the new double album manage to captivate me.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

that double disc is twice the bullshit

Mr. Harvey Weinstein (mr harvey weinstein), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

what's it called?

bob hill, Friday, 21 April 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)
