No but I want it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish there was a video for 'I Want More'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

there's painful footage of them miming it for a european TV show on one of the documentaries. as well as an even more painful video for the 'sacrilege' remix.

I think I'm content with the VHS tape from the box set (which contains said documentary, the one that spans their whole career). But I'd love to see someone else's copy sometime for the new recent documentary.

A friend lent it to me yesterday, I've only watched the live concert so far, which is 50 minutes long (only one chapter on the dvd) and consists of 3 or 4 live jams intercut with footage of Can talking in the studio (though maintaining the sound of live recording). Concert is from 71 or 72, so the good era. However, the footage is hardly enthralling with camera man filming a juggler when Can got too boring.

OTM milton -- i got a promo of it and much of the new stuff is most def. "painful"!

if you've never seen "free concert" by all means do.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 8 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

argh that juggler. the first fifteen minutes of that concert film are incredible though, they're on fire. The montage is loopy, Director Peter Przygodda was Wim Wenders' film editor.

it's worth it overall, seconding dleone's pitchfork review. lots of incredible late 60's early 70's performance footage, although in typical documentary style it's too frequently faded down to run quietly in the background while some dj starts babbling about Can's influence on his work etc., the whistle test footage shows Czukay doing tablecore (including using a wire tapper to rhythmically interpolate shortwave radio samples) while the band obliviously rocks out like disco Traffic. some fun shots of Schmidt bickering with Czukay.

Some enjoyable stuff on the whole, but I'm not sure it's actually worth the investment.. I find the Free Concert boring and can't imagine when I'll watch the documentary again

The bit where Noel Edmonds introduces them on Top of The Pops is jawdropping

You all neglect to mention that the Can DVD features the all-time WORST, ABSOLUTELY FUCKING STUPIDEST VIDEO ARTIFACT EVER PRODUCED IN THE HISTORY OF THE CAPTURED MOVING IMAGE:

I refer of course to the 1 minute video shot by and starring the eternally unbearable bald fuckeroo Brian Eno.

I'm telling you, this 60-second Eno pukefest is the worst thing I have seen in my life, ever, period, no doubt about it. And in this lifetime I've endured everything from multiple episodes of 'Love Boat' and 'Fantasy Island' and 'Family Feud' to the complete oeuvre of Leni Riefenstahl and 'Birth Of A Nation' and this Eno CRAP-OLA is more torturous, more idiotic, more excruciating than anything I can possibly imagine.

How bad is it? If your 12-year old student turned this in as a video project, you'd give the pretentious little fucker a big fat "F". It makes the worst excesses of the likes of David Byrne or Momus seem (well, almost) dignified. Even if you are an Eno fan, you will still want to punch him in the face after seeing this.

WHY THE FUCK is this on the DVD??????

I've been pretty much indifferent to the existence of Eno, but after seeing this, I'm praying for his painful demise from this plane of existence.

Kjoerup, Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

what can happen that's that bad for one minute?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Eno!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I like your jump from "eternally unbearable" to "pretty much indifferent to the existence of"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This Noel Edmonds... Just how much white powdery fairy dust was this hopped up twit on when he introduced Can anyway? An astounding testament to mainstream tee vee host drug use, this.

Kjoerup, Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he's always like that

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Audio CD is suprisingly good, esp. the Karoli Sofortkontakt material.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The version of "Vernal Equinox" from The Old Grey Whistle Test is astonishing.

I've only watched the documentary disc so far, but I've enjoyed almost every minute. The Eno thing is too short to be truly annoying.

J (Jay), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

I am just getting around to watching a 1:27 Can dvd (is this "the" Can dvd?) on youtube and I had never actually seen the members of Can talking before. It's kinda weird! I'm not even all the way done because i like to watch in little bits when I have 10-15 here and there, but in the meantime i have some questions

Does Irmin Schmidt ever shut up?
Why does he act like he's in charge of everything all the time? Was he? He's so bossy, esp during the Vernal Equinox performance. I can't get over him karate chopping in that insane metal vest.
Was Jaki recognized during that time as being extraordinarily good?
In addition to his guitar playing, is Michael Karoli recognized for being an impossibly hot 70s man? So far he seems a little full of himself (no surprise) but not a bad person.

this is the one I'm watching
