So, I just discovered ILM, and spent the past 10 hours combing through back threads. I'm really impresed with the depth of musical knowledge here, so I'm hoping you ladies and gents can help.

For the past three years or so, I've been feeling like one of those geezers who does nothing but complain about the "kids these days." I have a lot of trouble finding new releases and new bands that spark anything in me. I need recommendations pretty please.

Current stuff I like:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (album only)
Fischerspooner
Raveonettes (album more than EP)
Basement Jaxx song /w Siouxsie

Stuff I like in general:
Soft Cell
Primal Scream (Vanishing Point on)
Supremes
Suicide
Fad Gadget/Normal
First 2 VU albums
J&MC
Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Cabaret Voltaire
Sisters of Mercy (early singles/Floodland)
Spacemen 3

You get the idea, I hope

Stuff that sounded like I may like but I didn't:
Rapture/rest of DFA
Interpol
Strokes
ARE Weapons

I know theres hope for me. Find it in your hearts to help :p

you can't go wrong boosting girls aloud, slating the nme, and calling people 'rockist' if you disagree with them.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting list. almost a diect rip from my collection. only missing foetus and age of chance. anyway .. new stuff to grab .. Death In Vegas albums. right up your street from the looks of it.
dot allison last solo album. mommy and daddy 'live how you listen' (pil meets electroclash) .. oh and a ton more that the rest will jump on ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

welkommen

other stuff you might like: zongamin, !!!, ladytron 'softcore jukebox' compilation, death in vegas, soft pink truth

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the start! I like Foetus a good amount actually (esp. the Marc Almond collab.) but I didn't want to make the list too unwieldy and all. Checking all the rest out (except for Mommy and Daddy which g/f will not let me play in house as she hates the vocals.)

anode, Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Colder - esp. 'Crazy Love' and 'Slow Descent'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

david holmes 'last exit...' album. and the best has to be : T. Raumschmiere
simply excellent fusion of massive glitterstomp beats, massive electrofused rock noise. find 'monster truck driver' for prime example. .

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by the DFA, esp the new "Yeah" single and the Rapture album.

Metal Urbain's not new, but it's new to me - grating French '77 punk w/ synths.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bbbut he already said he didn't like that! Actually getting a nice haircut makes me feel more young than buying hip records. Although if you end up dancing to the records that'll work.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ooops. missed that. sorry.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I might recommend both Medicine Mechanical Forces of Love and Manitoba Up in Flames.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i just seen old Medicine album from 92 .. wats it like then ? on Def American .. pretty crap(ish) non-descript cover .. just Medicie written large across top .. any good ?

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it's quite good. More MBV than the latest one and less R&B. Worth hearing, though, for sure.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

added to my list then. ta. i saw it and thought ILM regulars were in favour ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

are you familiar w. the whole mash-up scene? you might like some of that.

also:
Mew: 'Frengers' - glorious poppy rock

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Goto....

hmmm. z'at you alex or just a band you rate ?

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Anode, you ARE me! (Except for the Ratpure hate and all.) Welcome etc.

The Medicine and Manitoba albums...uh, go direct to Chapterhouse instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. z'at you alex or just a band you rate ?

Well, they're friends of mine, but I do indeed highly rate Firewater....biases notwithstanding.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the Pluramon album NOW!!!! It took about a dozen years off my age ;-)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Medicine - do check out Shot Forth Self Living

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i just seen old Medicine album from 92 .. wats it like then ? on Def American .. pretty crap(ish) non-descript cover .. just Medicie written large across top .. any good ?

If you're speaking of Shot Forth Self Living, I'd say yes. Sell a kidney, take a kid's lunch money, grab an old lady's purse, whatever. Get it.

x-post

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

TV on the Radio - Young Liars EP (Touch&Go)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug&Pint

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently you have exactly the same musical tastes as my boyfriend, minus the Falco.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

guess i'll get that medicine album then. i bought Dismemberment PLans last lp upon ILM posts and that was not a good'un .. but i will trust the obvious consensus once again .. though one more strike and we could all fall out you know ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah - TV on the Radio!

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing i have to ask. there has been a lot of love expressed towards the list given. does all this include Sputnik ? for the record i like em (tis fun stuff.. not to be taken seriously or regularly).. i thought i was alone ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Sputnik were great! It remains a scandal that "Love Missile F1-11" was kept off number one by that treacherous rogue Sir William Ocean.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Great suggestions, keep 'em coming please!

Verdicts if anyone cares:

Colder - Could only track down one sample, sounds amazing. From reviews seems like album will be up my alley, seeking out next record store strip.
Death in Vegas - Somewhat impressed in general, Gallagher is awful, sounds like Cracker. I could have sworn these guys were Daft Punk soundalikes before, faulty memory?
Zongamin - Too housey/noveltyish, reminds me of Console.
T. Raumschmiere - :wumpscut: w/o apocalyptic dead baby imagery. Why aren't they on Metropolis?
Soft Pink Truth - Good songwriting. Needs vox.
Holmes - Know through Primal Scream, never liked as much as I felt I should.
Ladytron - If they always sounded like "Oops, Oh My" from that comp they'd be my favoritest band ever. Less snark, more rock, ladies.
!!! - sounds like DFA + horns with Mick Jones singing to me. Am I missing something?
Manitoba/Medicine - Reviews sound hippyish, vaguely remember hating Medicine song on Crow soundtrack.
Mew - A bit shoegazerey, not my thing, really.
Mash-ups - love 'em, hard to find good ones outside of Soulwax/Freelance Hellraiser/Dsico
Firewater - This is ex-Cop Shoot Cop, no? Reminded me of Tear Garden on crack, still deciding if I like.
Metal Urbain have me most intrigued out of all of these, not really helping the feeling like a geezer, I guess :p I have a feeling finding their stuff will be an adventure, Amazon is charging firstborn for imports.

Ned: I felt the same way reading a lot of posts. It's really nice finding an enclave of good taste out there!

PS: If anybody here is feeling especial kinship with my tastes go check out Tarantella Serpentine (http://www.tarantellaserpentine.com) and Mechanical Cabaret (http://www.mechanicalcabaret.com) like, yesterday!

anode, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TR dont need to be on metropolis .. they're on Mute. surely thats enuff .. wait till you see the guys artwork .. superb. (exclusive TR artwork possibly available via ireallylovemusic.co.uk in near future ..)
more mashups .. www.idcmusic.com especially the BRMC/Goldfrapp strapon .. tis large entertainment, as is the justin/felix mash ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Metal Urbain comp on Acute may not be officiatlly out yet? But that's what I was thinking of.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Firewater sounded like the Tear Garden??? Crazy.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not heard the Tear Garden, so I'm afraid I can't weigh in on that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the Tear Garden have something to do with TSOL, or did I dream that?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It was Edward Ka-spel and Cevin Key side project if my Wax Trax era memory holds true.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm. I'm wrong abou the TSOL connection then. In any event, I can't imagine anything Cevin Key had a hand in to sound like Firewater at all. Cop Shoot Cop, maybe, but never Firewater.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Tear Garden are very different than the usual Key stuff, much more rock/pop-ish and song oriented, in a twisted sort of way. Much more low-key than what I heard of Firewater, though.

anode, Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And they're pretty great.

Get the Pluramon album NOW!!!! It took about a dozen years off my age ;-)

Now see, I was all excited about it based on your words and others really liked it too but when I heard it I thought it was pleasant...but no more? I was trying to get a sense of how it stood out from the other post-gaze revival records this year and I wasn't sure it had a particularly individual quality there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

try these:

m83 - "gone"
mu - "chair girl"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

w/o apocalyptic dead baby imagery. Why aren't they on Metropolis?

Answered your own question. Although Metro's been branching out with Bunnydrums and Ascii Disko. I think, though, that a band has to be at least 6 months on its way out to sign to Metropolis and T. Raumschmiere's record was pretty good. Why leave where he's at (big label) for a shitty American importer?

Xii (Xii), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

try gohomeproductions for mashups...or lance lockarm!

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Why leave where he's at (big label) for a shitty American importer?
No idea he was with Mute when I posted, just thought he'd fit in there :p They move a lot more units than people think though.

anode, Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be worth you trying to look for some Ambulance. They've only done one EP (and a 12" single a while ago that Arthur Baker remixed).

Search: their cover of 21 Seconds, I Am A Star and Hey Beat Takeshi!

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

get "Rough Trade Counter Culture" or whatever the correct title is. wall to wall top stuff in this vein.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They move a lot more units than people think though.

I'm aware of Metro's success, but saying they compete with Mute? Especially given the new major label ownership budget shit? If he wanted to jump ship, he'd have labels five times more important than Metro licking his anus clean to put out his records.

I wouldn't want to be stuck on a niche label that's forcibly marginalized themselves and are currently signing anything they can get their hands on to evade that label. They were better when they were Zoth USA.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel odd recommending Adult. to someone who wants to feel young, but what the hells. Anxiety Always is a neat record, all filthy with dumb punk riffs rendered all synthy.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

get rid of the fischerspooner.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm aware of Metro's success, but saying they compete with Mute?
No no, you're misunderstanding me. It was just a little snarky comment; I have no career advice for this band/artist. If I did, it certainly wouldn't be to leave Mute.
get rid of the fischerspooner.
And give in to drabness? ;)

anode, Friday, 9 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

their flair has fizzled.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 9 January 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

feels kind of weird recommending this since you were around at the time but what about skinny puppy bites/remission

hector (hector), Friday, 9 January 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Firreal.

In my younger (read as: high school) days, I was really into the EBM thing. I was of age in time for Pendragon to really make its mark on me, with bands like Haujobb and Forma Tadre just blowing me away. Covenant's _Sequencer_ dropped a bomb on my conception of dance music. To that kid, Metropolis was the 300lb gorilla who walked in and slowly ate up all the interesting things going on in the genre. Instead, it offered a seemingly endless conveyer line of club beats and marginalized a lot of the interesting bands by offering them deals and giving them inadequate promotion.

I still appreciate the music I enjoyed when I was younger, but I've traded my gut reaction for a slightly more distanced one. My opinion of the label hasn't changed for that.

Which is why I react so strongly at people attributing positive comments to that label. In my head, they ruined the music that made me love music.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 9 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Own and love. Wasn't around t the time though; I only feel old (I'm 22.)

Xii, I feel similarly; I was just saying that they sounded like a generic Metro band (Hocico, newer Suicide Commando, whatever they're doing now.) Having grown up in Philly, I dislike them a good amount actually, as the entire scene around me was dominated by them.

anode, Friday, 9 January 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

La Casa Azul, they're great.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

22?

Well then do you like any of the earlyish Depeche Mode albums?

or in another directions have you exhausted the early 90's Wax Trax output?

If you like Caberet Voltaire and that sort Soul Jazz has some reissues that might be of interest to you there is one called "In The Beginning There Was Rhythm" and also New York Noise. If you are really going to be looking you might want to try out some Throbbing Gristle or PTV.
Storm the Studio by Meat Beat Manifesto
a greatest hits by Front 242
might as well listen to some gang of four too

there is a ton of stuff!
Just keep responding and we'll sort you out.
