Back in the area, etc. I'm gonna get the picks and rules up in a bit, just have to find a decent list. However, I'm making the thread now cos I'm gonna put the new picks up a bit earlier this time, give people more time to get picks in. Dunno about an ending date this time either - am I really gonna be able to keep it up till Christmas... give it a go anyway.

Back in a tick.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Right -

Pick the position (1-75) that the following songs will enter the UK Singles Chart at on Sunday after next (i.e. 18th January). If not on the list, pick the song you think will be at number one in the chart.
Also pick the song you think will be at the randomly selected position in the chart, as denoted at the bottom of the list.

Points are scored as follows:

10 POINTS for predicting the correct position
5 POINTS for being one away (either side)
1 POINT for being one away (either side)
10 BONUS POINTS for correctly predicting the number one
10 BONUS POINTS for correctly predicting the song that is at the random position

OK? Good. Here's the picks:

2-Play featuring Raghav & Jucxi - So Confused #27
Amy Studt - All I Wanna Do #9 (Bit of a chancer this lady... seems to have little to offer)
Beyonce - Me, Myself And I #3 (Our dear B should make # 3 in the post Xmas and New Year climate, yet I feel she's not going to easily have another hit like "Crazy in Love"... at least not off the slumbering remainder of her album; why doesn't she play to her strengths? And oh, this is NOWHERE NEAR De La Soul's song of the same name, which I've recently absorbed... :))
Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Mr. Mental #43 (What sort of band name is that!? :))

Thought: as a control condition, how about someone pops into Woolworth's each Monday to see what the Woolworth's chart is? Are we as good as Woolworth's workers as predicting the charts?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If I get a chance to pop in during monday I usually factor the Woolworth's chart into my predictions, unless they're being all krazy and predicting Big Things for Kym Marsh or someone. Alternatively, the Asda one. I will hold off making my picks until tomorrow I think.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 11 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

is the Liberty X track new? if so i'll go for that at #1 this Sunday

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Number one: Changes - Ozzy/Kelly Osbourne

Sorry, got my weeks mixed up thought it was This week.

Can I change it to Michelle McManus?

Cheers....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

We close in two minutes, Robin Carmody still hasn't picked a #1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaand we're done.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

William, are there prizes up for grabs this time? Party hats? Funsize milky ways? Everyone likes prizes.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about this.

What I Will Do Or At Least Attempt To Do - go down M&VE once a week and get something from their £1 rack. Bundle is prize at the end. Bear in mind I will buy these albums on the assumption I won't have to listen to them.

Failing that I might bundle some CDs of my own together. These will be bundled on the assumption I won't want to listen to them.

It's all a way away, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I clearly couldn't bring myself to predict (through gritted teeth) that Michelle will stay at #1, albeit mainly by default ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's hope there aren't any worse No. 1s in the rest of 2004... it doesn't quite seem likely from this juncture; dear me, it's woeful. :)

Tom May (Tom May), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Heyyy, be so jealous. I haven't even heared it.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLYSHITTINGFUCKYFUCKYFUCKINGHELLJESUSFUCKINGCHRISTOHMYSHITTINGGOD

Mr Swygart has just seen the midweek predictions. On current form, it would seem that everyone is going to be scoring somewhere in the region of SWEET FUCK ALL.

Lemme put it this way. FRANZ FERDINAND are the nearest challengers for #1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want to say much more than that, but with that and some of the other stuff, we are on course for Wrexham-Arsenal upset proportions here...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Heck, I'll buy one...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

As i will only be 11 places out, do I get 1/11th of a point?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There is also a shock top 10 entry that will make a certain Aussie very chuffed indeed.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

One imagines both those songs will droop a little as there's only been one day of sales. But re: those figures (not really midweeks as only one day of data in them, right?) are amazing.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know Rolf Harris had a single out...

(predictable funny no.242)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably. I've no idea what the gap between the two singles is, FF might make top 5 but could equally miss it.

However. If news leaks to the indie kids of this, then things could well be gettin' kinda hectic.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the power.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, if the indie kids hear, there'll be some kind of campaign to buy extra copies, jinxing the whole thing and such. (precedent can be cited, but can't be arsed)

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, we're underway in a wee bit.

We aren't changing the deadline to Tuesday because I do not want any possibility of the midweeks interfererising with the predictions.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

TUESDAY IS NOT MIDWEEK

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

most people are reluctant to post before the new chart is announced, so only getting an evening and very early morning to post is a bit of a stifler on the game i think. oh dear what a pity never mind.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

TUESDAY IS WHEN THE MIDWEEKS COME OUT.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I might nix next week's one, cos there's a slight yet important rule change. I also forgot to pick a random number.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - I should have opened picks for week two earlier, like Thursday or something. That's what I'm trying to do now...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

But never mind. The album chart seems to have been as thrilling as ever. Dido is #1, Tears For Fears' best of was #5 or something, tuned in too late to hear where Fat Ally Griffin came in, as if I care or something...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

how accurate have the midweeks been lately then? as in exact matches or matches within point-scoring region generally? not enough to take the edge off too much i wouldn't have thought. are Franz Ferdinand really going to be number one later? i'd be absolutely flabberghasted if so.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Midweeks are usually pretty accurate, to within about four or five places on average. Their main function is for rooting out surprises, e.g. Franz F, most of the rest of this week's chart.

Bo Selecta got to #40.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, they're probably a good deal more accurate than that, about two or three places.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

except with 'Good Luck' and 'Milshake' - actually, what WERE their midweek positions? do you know?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Darkness 36.

Good Luck was about #12, Milkshake #4.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And I thought Wes wasn't allowed to mention Coca-Cola?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 18 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

he is for the moment but the rules will change later in the year and the Coke namecheck will go - the U-turn is basically because the BBC are wary of seeming too commercial in the run-up to charter renewal, especially now that the Tories have got right back on their "privatise anything remotely populist the BBC does and reduce it to the level of PBS/NPR in America" track of 10 years ago, and New Labour have their own reasons to BBC-bash.
