Why does my copy of Deliverance suck?

Well, it doesn't really suck, but bear with me. I bought the Bubba Sparxxx record after downloading it. The downloaded version is awesome, and the version I bought, while good, isn't as good. One of the things that grabbed me most, listening off my computer, was the use of Missy and JT's vocal samples (on "Nowhere" and "Comin' Round," I think). Their integration wasn't just a delicious pop hook, but also, I don't know, really interesting on a mentalist level.

But the CD I picked up at the store lacks both of these samples. In fact, a bunch of the tracks are substantially truncated. What's the deal? Did the samples not make the final cut (if so, there's a bunch of 'lyric' websites that just copied off the prerelease, leaked version)? Do I have some strange, bum copy? Is there anyone who wants to buy it off me for $11? Is this a common occurrence?

I don't know but I want to hear the versions you have

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

My copy has Justin singing the chorus on one song, but not "Comin' Round" I don't think. I'm not sure Missy appears anywhere on it, apart from the "Ugly" bonus track. Kiley Dean sings the chorus on "Nowhere", better than Missy would I think.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 9 January 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Kiley sings the chorus on the version I've got. Probably my equal favourite with "Comin' Round" of the tracks I've heard - so beautiful and mournful! The way the strings from "Cry Me A River" sneak in towards the end is inspired - it almost didn't need the gospel chorus to make it explicit.

Kiley sounds gorgeous - any non-"Make Me A Song" tracks of her I should seek out?

Justin sings on "Hootnanny".

Is there a US and a UK version? I have a feeling my downloaded is the US but my bought is definitely UK.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, more listening suggests that I was mistaken - like you say, it's not Justin singing "Cry me a river" on "Nowhere," it's Kiley Dean. But the version I bought on CD doesn't have either: it fades out at 5:37 before the strings or the chorus from "CMaR" have been introduced.

"Comin Round," meanwhile, ends at about 3:40. On the version I downloaded, instead, 3:40 boasts Missy's "I put my thang down, flip it and reverse it," along with the reversal (the sample might appear earlier on the track; I don't remember). It's grate!

I bought this in Canada...

Tim - the only other Kiley Dean track i've heard is "Keep It Movin'", and is well worthy of a download - lovely Timbo ballad that blossoms into flamenco at the end.

Mind Taker, Friday, 9 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My downloaded copy has neither Justin nor Missy, and now I don't trust the shop copies to have them either :(

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean if you were to post any of the "original" tracks, like "comin' round," on your blog, I, uh, wouldn't object too strenuously.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

:) The "original" version of "Nowhere" is up there now (that is, the version with someone [Kiley?] singing "Cry me a river" at the end: it looks like that's the vsn most of you have on your copies, but it's not on mine). I'll post "Comin Round" later today.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks sean, by the way I really enjoy "gramophone"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, this version of "nowhere" is great, I wonder what the deal is.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Cry me..." and "Work It..." versions are NOT on the UK CD. Whcih I would be gutted about, were it not a strong enough album on its own.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay - the "missy" version of "Comin' Round" has now been posted: enjoy! (and thanks for the kind words, s10cki!)

Does this suggest that there might be a UK-Canada version of the CD (which Nick and I have bought), and one, with full samples, for the USA?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 10 January 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't bought an RIAA CD since De La Soul's last one.
Fuck tha police.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 10 January 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Merry New Year, peeps, I complained about this on the original thread! I did find the full version of 'Nowhere' on iTunes a couple months back, but no full 'Comin' Round'. Does the US version still have the originals?

"Kiley sounds gorgeous - any non-"Make Me A Song" tracks of her I should seek out?"

'Keep It Movin' was only my favourite non-single release of last year al'Plug It In', and a song I spent aaaages going on about in other threads. Try 'Cross The Line', 'Blessed' and 'Stay Away From My Boyfriend'.

Barima (Barima), Saturday, 10 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean, the copy "Nowhere" I got from your blog cuts off before the end, as does that track by The Weekend you put up. I dunno if this is me or you.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 10 January 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i just tried to download Comin Round, but it was cut short. i shall try again.

downloaded Nowhere the other day, which downloaded fine. anyway, thanks Sean, will be checking your blog regularly!

Why does my copy of Deliverance suck?

I think your problem may be in that Bubba Sparx music is all over the CD.

(Bam!)

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 10 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"bams" seem a little desperate when the author delivers it himself

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 10 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry Barima, I saw your Kiley love but was never near a downloading-equipped computer at the time and so never remembered to investigate further. I do have "Make Me A Song" and also "Confused" which I like a lot but not as much as her chorus on "Nowhere".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Now have the full versions off your blog Sean, for some reason the downloads timed out. Top stuff. That Weekend track is great too.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No probs, Tim. Also, that was "alongside 'Plug It In'" in the original post. What is up with Kiley these' days?
