Albums tend to be conservative choices, Singles can be more 'out there' at times...

Or not?

What were the hippest albums in your Parent's Record Collection when you were growing up?

rw, Friday, 9 January 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Beatles EP with (IIRC) She Loves You, I Want To Hold Your Hand, All My Loving & Can't Buy Me Love; there was a Shadows EP with (IIRC) Apache, Man Of Mystery, FBI and Atlantis; and there was Georgie Fame's Yeh Yeh / Getaway.

Pretty bloody raunchy, dangerous stuff, eh?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

my Mum bought 'Introducing The Hardline...' by Terence Trent D'Arby on vinyl which was pretty hip for 1987 right?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

michael - if you recall "Running Bear" by Johnny Preston too, then yes!

Ah, you've lost me now. Late bid for fraternity: "I Who Have Nothing" 45 by Shirley Bassey.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This will tell you how hip (and old) my parents were:

78 of Hungarian Rhapsody /Liszt. (No recollection who performed it..)

But the hippest LP was "Winchester Cathedral" - New Vaudeville Band

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

up up and away-5th dimension
okie from muskokee-merle

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Brubeck - "Take Five" was probably the "Losing My Edge" of its day, or someething.

Francoise Hardy's "Catch A Falling Star" was "Hug My Soul", probably.

Whoever did that "Cinderella Rockerfeller" duet were likely to be the tommy from Space and Cerys Cerys Matthews of their day, even though the song's actually pretty cool.

I'm not sure my folks were all that hip, but they do own a lot of cool old Peter Sellers 10"s.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about the hip factor, but my favorites were:

"It's Only Make Believe" Conway Twitty
"Hound Dog" Elvis Presley
"Battle of New Orleans" Johnny Horton
"Beep! Beep!" The Playmates

BrianB (BrianB), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

all of the beatles singles up thru strawberry fields (no rockist was she)
about 25 motown singles
"get up (i feel like being a sex machine)" (!)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(of course my mother kept buying records well into the mid-80s [like prince, she loved black pop until rap took over], but i assume you meant holdover singles from when she was a kid herself.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

most hip: Nat King Cole

least hip: Jim Nabors

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, singles. they were too progressive to have singles.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My grandmother was into Motown, although I can't remember her having any records at all. She mainly listened to the radio. My dad was (and in some way still is) into Northern Soul. My mum never much listened to music: my dad controled the stereo and *shrug* she's a workaholic with NO time for hobbies. Hmm, I remember my dad buying loads of Bowie, Eurythmics and stuff for my mom in a vain attempt to stop her working all the time. ha! The least hip was the shit my uncle gave my parents. Appalling man, appalling taste in music.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Lawrence, they had an iPOD?

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

if by iPOD you mean a gigantic buffet that housed a turntable and two speakers then, yes

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they had any singles because you had to have some weird mechanism that stacked and dropped them one by one. They either lost it or threw it away.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I dont think they bought singles when they were young or at least they didnt keep them. My Dad bought the 7" of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" though when it was in the charts and that was my favourite single of theirs - "Rainbow High" on the B Side too!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 9 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Monks, Nice Legs, Shame About the Face
My mum bought this 7" - I know that because she even wrote her name on the sleeve. I have it now... but have no idea why she bought it. I would ask her but I doubt she'd even remember. She's an Elvis/Cliff fan by rights.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom has a box full of old Motown singles and a copy of the original, more surf-intensive version of "Theme from Hawaii 5-0"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm, Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But I think the latter was my idea.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Chic "Le Freak" (Mom)
Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band "A Fifth of Beethoven" (Dad)

Valerie Feldman (Valerie Feldman), Saturday, 10 January 2004 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

'Its A Man's World' - James Brown & the Famous Flames

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

probably "You Showed Me" by the Turtles or "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)
