...and presumably nobody cares. Or do they? Wonderfully Welsh? Terribly tepid? Classic or dud, then?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First two albums patchy but good (with great singles), last two consistently excellent but with patchy singles. More than enough good stuff to qualify as an easy classic despite "Mulder & Scully" being incredibly annoying. They're as brilliant as the Stereophonics are shite, and that's very good indeed. Pity their sales tend to be inversely proportional to their quality.

EdwardO, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cherys was one of the nicest interview subjects I've spoken to for ages - we talked about clinton's dick...musically, well their final album seemed the best, most exploratory to me, but that's often the way i guess.

Geoff, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hopeless really, but against my better judgement I really liked the recent Stone" single.

Dr.C, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Think Cherys will do a solo career?

Jason, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. Along with the my drink and drugs hell promo piece in the News of the World.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always perversely enjoyed Catatonia, although I got into them circa '96 when they sounded more like a hybrid of The Sundays and The Sugarcubes. I think their subsequent penchant for releasing BIG ANTHEMS turned a lot of people against them, but in Australia I was shielded from that and always enjoyed their more introspective side. OTOH, I listened to Equally Cursed & Blessed for the first time in ages recently and was shocked to realise that the album had really clunky and self-conscious production (eg. lob in a breakbeat here for diversity's sake). I've yet to hear the new release.

To turn this into a S&D affair...

Search: pretty much the entirety of Way Beyond Blue, then "Jonny Come Lately", "Strange Glue", "My Selfish Gene", "Bullimic Beats", "Valerian" and "Nothing Hurts".

Tim, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ok, if its S&D...

Search: Valerian, definitely their best song and by some distance, then You've Got A Lot To Answer For, Goldfish & Paracetamol, Game On, Strange Glue, Nothing Hurts, Dazed Beautiful & Bruised, Karaoke Queen, Village Idiots and What It Is.

Destroy: Mulder And Scully, Londinium (released as a single due to record company botch-up, probably single-handedly killed their singles career) and Cerys' ill-advised duet with Tom Jones. That was really bad.

EdwardO, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Catatonia: Shitty indie band that only got somewhere bacause Cerys was good looking. Music was truly awful. The world will be a better place.

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with the above sentiment. Apart from the bit about Cerys being good-looking, she looks like a builder. But not Bob the Builder.

DG, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah, Catatonia were one of the very few decent indie bands of recent years - especially the early records. 'Bleed' was magnifique.

Johnathan, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant "Stone by Stone" upthread.

Dr. C, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never heard them. But whoever they are, they can't possibly hold a candle to the gloriously melancholy artgoth band Katatonia.

Jack Redelfs, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Katatonia! I like Catatonia very much and so I recommended them to a friend of mine who occasionally demonstrated a peculiar leaning towards pop, but really a penchant for death metal of the Swedish persuasion--he ended up getting Katatonia by accident instead and loves it more. Kismet!

I guess I'm the only person here who actually likes Londinium, though. I liked that they were a big anthem band for the 90's--how many unabashedly sincere bands exist nowadays? And the melodic content of the songs were quite strong--one of the few bands in recent memory that didn't just paint by numbers. Plus they sang these almost naively optimistic and embassioned odes to self- affirmation and hope--so cute!

Mickey Black Eyes, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You wrote this just to antagonise me, didn't you Ned?

I've never felt that much for Catatonia. I saw 'em in '94 supporting 60ft Dolls and thought they were a bit - well - pointless, and my thoughts never changed that much. Cerys' voice ended up being annoying after a while. They were just one more of the post Brit-pop bands to make a career for a (major label) album or two before messing up big style. Our local paper naturally informed us that Cerys is working on solo material already with some producer or other, so wait and see. Can't say I'm holding my breath.

Rob M, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: 'Lost Cat'

Destroy: 'Road Rage'

DavidM, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everything I do, Rob, I do for you.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i actually prefer Katatonia, also. just so you know. anyone else llike 'em?

matt, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Katatonia is kind of cheesy. I've never heard of Catatonia.

Kris, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Oh well, there are other fish in the sea.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I would just like to say that I loved all the "anthem" tracks that everyone put down on this thread; "Road Rage" and "Mulder and Scully" in particular.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Cerys's solo album Cock-a-hoop is apparently brilliant.

Great lady.

russ t, Friday, 23 May 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How to destroy career - not only release most boring lead-off single in the world, but include lyrics about being tired

dave q, Friday, 23 May 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My housemate interviewed her a couple of days ago and she was reportedly the very definition of lovely. Although to be fair he didn't really ask her anything that might have antagonised her in any way.

"Have you even got any veins left that work properly?" say.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought she was an (ALLEGED) alcoholic, not a druggie

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she was, but if you were looking to annoy her it surely can't fail...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you got any kidneys or a liver that works properly?

kate, Friday, 23 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and presumably nobody cares. Or do they?
I, for one, would be guilty of the firt option. Though I wish them no ill will I would not look forward to a reunion tour and/or album either.

ric, Friday, 23 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty girl, but appparently got "tired out" by the bidness.
i think this means "too much blow".

Or "too much blowin'," but you can never tell.

i dunno -- can you spot the track marks?

Altho, you gotta wonder what happens when you're in a band and your frontchick shows up (solo) on the cover of "Gear" magazine(a Maxim/laddie knock-off mag) in late '99, looking all a-sweaty and removing her shirt.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This another one of those bands where I'm just surprised to hear that they hadn't broken up already.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)
