So what are Prince/The Artist/Squiggly Line/whatever he is these days (copyright crap Prince jokes vol.1)best and worst moments? Did he, despite his diminutive stature, have any real high points? (copyright crap Prince jokes vol.3) Well, anyway, you all know the drill by now peeps, so get cracking. And pour moi? Search: "Seven" or the "Parade" album. Destroy: All those endless, tuneless paens to cunnilingus, jacking off, etcetra, that aren't covered by Tom Jones. O and all that Batman stuff. Ugh.

Search: Of course "Sign O' the Times", one of those classics that really deserves it. But even better is "Around the World in a Day". That's all you really need from the Purple One. Destroy: all post-Alphabet Street shite. And the song "1999" ;)

Search: Erotic City, Darling Nikki, entire Dirty Mind album for the dirty stuff. Pop Life and Sometimes it Snows in April for the rest. Emancipation, for reasons outside of musical quality, although it stands up there too.

Destroy: New Power Soul as the obvious choice, Much of the Symbol album as the less obvious one.

Search: Parade (ac ontender for most consistent album ever); most of Sign O' The Times Destroy: most post-Squiggle stuff, especially Chaos & Confusion (a contender for most consistently bad album ever)

Seek: "Dirty Mind" - Prince makes the new-wave/disco traffic genuinely two-way. Lots of other stuff too but that's my favourite Prince track.

Destroy: The man's own version of "Nothing Compares 2 U". Argh.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Sign O' The Times, Erotic City.

Destroy: Batdance. AND Kiss, because Julia Roberts sang it in the bath in Pretty Woman, and Julia Roberts singing ANYTHING disqalifies it as respectable

Search: "Release It" by the Time. Destroy: The Rest of the Grafitti Bridge LP

Mark Richardson, Wednesday, 7 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark, you're being far too hard on graffiti_bridge. yes, it does have the title track and "melody cool" but it also has "joy in repetition," "still would stand all time," "we can funk," and so forth. if you're going to destroy anything about_gb_, make it the film.

search: going beyond the obvious, _lovesexy_, his last truly brilliant album. in this age of napster, some unreleased tracks to check out: "welcome 2 the rat race," "crystal ball," "electric intercourse," and "moonbeam levels," amongst a score of others.

destroy: every song he's put on the internet to date. with the power of the net, he's able to put up songs on his website as he finishes them. the drawback? they mostly suck, reminders of how far he's fallen off. i only wish this technology was available during his fruitful mid-80s period.

Search: _Parade_. If there's only one album to get, make it that one. The second half in particular is devastating. Avoiding the obvious classics (_1999_, _Purple Rain_, _Sign O' The Times_), I also have to say _Around The World In A Day_ and _The Gold Experience_, assuming you can excise that godawful "Dolphin" song from it. Also, _Emancipation_ is flat-out brilliant.

Destroy: I mentioned "Dolphin" already... _Chaos And Disorder_ has exactly one worthwhile song on it ("Dig U Better Dead") while the rest is spectacular ka-ka.

four months pass...
YEA! :

'Parade' (my personal fave of Prince - the pop/rock composer), 'Sign O'The Times' (of course - Prince showing off in full bloom and force of his musical powers), 'Purple Rain' (sure, it's been played out for 10 lifetimes worth, but...in this rare case in pop music, for good reason - minus that crap lead-off track), 'Around The World In A Day' (right, it's nowhere near being even/consistent or at times even coherent, but still...an interesting enough listen, from time to time...or...at least it used to be), '1999' (about half of it - nix the hit singles, more the offerings "Something In The Water Does Not Compute" or "All The Critics Will Love You, In New York").

NAY! :

The rest (which results in MANY albums). Yikes. Basically, Prince can be thought of in three-parts: pre-'1999' / '1999-Sign o'the Times' / post-'Sign o'The Times'

from '1999-Sign' Prince did little wrong. Before and after that period...is another story altogether where the complete opposite is true (of course, he still would, or does - haven't paid much attention the past some years other than to catch a wiff which always proves sour, crank out an impressive single track here and there).
