..Or,
Q: What does a Grateful Dead fan say when he runs out of pot?
A: Hey, this band really sucks.

Any experiences with bandds that you thought were great and then one day you heard one of their songs and you said .. (out loud or to yourself, doesn't matter) .. why in FUCK have I been listening to this horrible band?

For me .. (Of course having been a teenager at the time makes some difference - because teenagers will like shit for no good reason..)
... Moody Blues - When I heard "Gemini Dream" - I thought it sounded like ELO, and I realized that almost all of the Moody Blues songs are pretty ass-rub.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Manic Street Preachers for me. What was I thinking?

And lots of bad punk/emo bands.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dream Theater. The dork remorse was overwhelming!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in high school, I wasn't into music as much as I am now. I went to see my favourite group, ELO. I liked the ditties they had on the radio. Well, I found it quite dull and insulting that I paid megamoolah for tickets to see them at the Pontiac Silverdome, only to have them mime their way way through a show. ELO stopped being my favourite group, and music became even less important for me for a while after that.

Oasis - Whats The Story (morning glory)

s n d, Monday, 12 January 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked limpbizkit's 1st album *i know, i know*
alot of my fiends liked them but 10 seconds into hearing the 2nd release i was all "these guys fucking blow".

dyson (dyson), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My adventures with Embrace to thread. I still like certain tunes.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of ridiculous metal, goth and hardcore bands. 7 Seconds are the first to spring to mind.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Modest effin Mouse. That voice.

tipustiger, Monday, 12 January 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah and the song? "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes"

tipustiger, Monday, 12 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Mansun. Luckily I only liked them for a week or so.

Btw, ELO is GRATE!

Sean (Sean), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Kula Shaker. I was momentarily into both "Tattva" and "Hey Dude." I was drunk a lot at the time, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And eating fondue, no doubt...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But of course!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

10,000 Maniacs. I know, I know. But I was in college at the time.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I echo Nick's Embrace experiences. Both of us appeared on TV as a result of that band's existence/semi-popularity. Only one of us were screened proclaiming the band from on high. Thankfully, they cut absolutely all of my speech out. Unlucky Nick! Some of the songs though, are great.

I add Cast to thread.

Colin Cooper, Monday, 12 January 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oasis, the bluetones, most britpop actually

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox, etc.

sym (shmuel), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the Flaming Lips

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

add Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci too. These three are all recent. It's like my cabal of musical heroes are daring to bore me into submission.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"poodle rockin" was the song that killed Gorky's for me.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

All post-Bristol trip hop acts (save for Lamb).

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 12 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

but 'poodle rockin' is great! i always find their goofy songs charming. i was off the super furry animals bandwagon after seeing their poor live performance but am back on after liking the last album quite a bit more than 'rings around the world'.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

built to spill and modest mouse. this is when i decided that i don't like amerindie, after all.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh boy...

fugazi
90s sonic youth
fIREHOSE

i can barely make it through the "classic" early REM albums anymore.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"jenny and the ess-dog" removed my desire to ever hear another malkmus-sung track ever again, either solo of pavemented.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

or

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i love that song. :-D

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

esp. the version he did on lamacq

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

in the not-too-distant past, i put on elvis costello's king of america and realized that it was absolute crap. ditto w/ blood and chocolate. funny, b/c at the time both were seen as his "return to form." anyway, i like the maligned punch the clock, goodbye cruel world, and spike much more. EC is better when smothered in studio-goo than stripped down (notable exception: my aim is true).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nota bene: EC's version of "don't let me misunderstood" is one of the most wretched things that has tortured my ears.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana, got into them about 8 years too late, and then one day I listened to Nevermind again... then it hit me, "What was I thinking?"... then it hit me "Wow now I can dislike them 8 years too late too!" Though I suppose Unplugged is still worth an occasional listen.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I completely agree with the aforementioned Embrace comments, though I still like certain tunes....(BTW I was in their 1st Video, such was my admiration for them)

WITNESS - I love their 1st album 'Before the Calm', it'd be in my top 100 ever, I played it over the weekend and still love it to bits. Then their 2nd album came out and I thought it was a bag of shite, saw them live and they were bobbins and it'll take something special for me to get back into them (Incidently I seem to remember their 2nd album was pretty well received by the press?)

actionjackson, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this seem frivolous to anyone else?
Does it make no fucking sense to stop liking an ENTIRE catalog
of work because of one item? Does it make sense, for example,
to hate the Beatles after hearing some stupid solo shit?

Re: the subject, I heard Creed in an enjoyable
social environment, and ended up buying BOTH of their albums.
A few spins later, I realized my mistake.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not hating them based on one song .. It's one song that makes you realize that it's been shit all along.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think when I finally realized how much "Wasteland" was a shallow appropriation of "Over the Wall" by the entirely superior Bunnymen, I was instantly clued-in: HANG ON A MOMENT, THE MISSION ARE NOTHING BUT A SILLY BUNCH OF DRUNKEN, UNORIGINAL GOTHS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, ELO is GRATE!

i'm afraid i have to agree...(without being able to remember any of their songs, just a dim feeling that i like them, and a vague sense of embarrassment at doing so)

but, adding to thread, chumbawamba. it was 'tubthumping' of course - i went off them a bit because the whole 'we're ANARCHISTS, DON'T YOU HEAR? CRAZY, CRAZY POLITICAL REVOLUTIONAIRES AND WE'RE GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' attitude didn't really cohere with signing to emi. so, i stopped listening for a while. and, looking back, they really were terrible. what was going through my head? lots of hair dye, and dodgy drugs, from what i remember. like a few of their other fans, i suspect.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If you find nothing to like in ELO, you are truly the nemesis of fun. C'mon, doesn't even "Mr.Blue Sky" or "Evil Woman" get yer pining for the simpler days?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Do Ya" - (or was that The Move?)

Jeff Lynne is the nemesis of ... something. Something to do with good production of George Harrison songs ....

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the title of this thread. its from the 'far side' cartoon, isn't it? i remember reading it and thinking it applied to lots of things in my life at the time.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a moment of awful realisation re. REM and that moment was probably the "Everybody Hurts" video. It wasn't an overnight thing but it slowly poisoned almost all their other stuff for me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

...Far Side - yep, you win the beer.
I used to say the 'grass' thing all the time - everytime I realized I had been duped.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"If you find nothing to like in ELO, you are truly the nemesis of fun."

I guess y'all missed the point of my story. ELO DID NOT PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENTS ON STAGE! (Setting the scene for Brittany Spears!) I didn't know too much about music back then, but I did have the notion that pretending to play your instruments on stage at a rock concert WAS NOT FUN. It was this, and not their songs, which turned me off. Isn't that the theme of the thread?
If this was simpler days, I'm not pining.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That "live" experience has thus probably influenced how I've since listened to ELO songs.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, back in the day, I remember reading an article in "People" magazine (of all places) about that "controversial" practice. Some journalist accused the band of playing to prerecorded tapes, saying "No way could those guys play those cellos properly, leaping about onstage like that!" And Jeff Lynne's (or somebody's) reply was, "Hey, if we were'nt going to play these things, why are we paying roadies to lug all this equipment from show to show?" An obvious baldfaced lie but an amusing remark nonetheless!

Scott, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Man Group until The Complex. After listening to it I realized how uninteresting their other album was too.
