Despite the Fife accent, being twins and wearing NHS glasses I think they're great.

Good GAWD, dud all 500 miles.

nathalie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Karaoke CLASSIC, sez I.

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Comparing other groups to them, as an insult = Classic.

Visiting my Father and finding him listening to -Sunshine on Leith- = DUD

Oh they're pretty good, though I often like the idea of them more than many of their songs. But there's a real brimstone and passion there which I find far more seductive than the hoary rock- cock 'intensity' of, say, Iggy Pop or Jon Spencer. Their brand of regionalism - see also It's Immaterial - I like a lot. They know their way round a tune and their lyrics are far more deft than most reviewers would have you believe. They're Scottish puritans, they look like kids you'd bully at school and they're not part of the indie crowd. That doesn't mean they're duds. I bought 'Persevere' in New York only last month and it's a bit of a belter. The Proclaimers versus Mogwai? The former by a country mile!

Oh Jesus, we have exhausted a lot of groups in these C-or-Ds, haven't we?! ;-)

"The Proclaimers versus Mogwai? The former by a country mile!"

Only if we're talkin' who's more deserving of brutal torture...

Absolutely fucking marvellous. Good Christian Socialist Scottish boys. And those harmonies...

Most of it I can do well without (OK then, Proclaimers w/band => DUD), but the "This Is the Story" album remains a CLASSIC with me -- whenever I put it on and the acoustic guitar + handclaps of "Throw the 'R' Away" starts, I get this urge to shout along with Charlie for the next forty minutes (good thing with the Procs: they shouted), and then play it again, this time shouting along with Craig.

Wonderful album, IMO, though a little taxing on the voice. Maybe I should learn the air bongos.

Terrific. 'I'm Gonna Be' is there worst moment, of course. 'Sunshine on Leith' (the song) perhaps their best.

Probably in the top five nicest musicians I've ever worked with, although hilariously they tour with an English to English translator basically. Not kidding.

That doesn't surprise me at all, especially after learning that Americans have subtitled people with relatively easy to understand British accents... I mean, REALLY?

Turrican, Friday, 16 October 2015 20:31 (ten years ago)

I'll never forget seeing Oasis' Behind the Music episode, which featured subtitles for everything that came out of Liam's mouth
