What individual songs have you been absolutely stuck on?

...I mean like STUCK. and I don't mean sides of records, or cds on repeat. I mean where you uncontrollably lift the needle back up and to the beginning of the same cut [or cd, or mp3, or whathaveyou] over and over and over. This weekend I was plagued by the following: TV Personalities "Part Time Punks", MF Doom "Dead Bent", and Edith Frost "Bluish Bells."

Hmmmmm? I know you are/were...

alex in nyc, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i spent an entire weekend listening to nothing but Into The Blue by Geneva. i think thats the title, if not, its something to do with blue on their first record. the bestest bit was the week following, we went to see Mansun and Geneva were supporting.

sad maybe, but true...

richardh, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OOH! I'm doing this as we speak.

General Johnson & Joey Ramone - Rockaway Beach

Yes, THAT Rockaway beach - in a soul/R&B style, and with the Spring sun shining & a clear blue sky (outside the office window, at least), it just seems RIGHT!

I just downloaded this from Filepile, & it was last on the list, so if you're interested - go there NOW!

Bill E, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

California Revisited by Simon Turner has formed quite a large proportion of my listening for the past few weeks. It's just SO GOOD though. Now, where's that CD?

Melissa W, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not nearly so fanatical as some previous respondants, but I _did_ spend the better part of a day listening to the Lefte Bank's "Pretty Ballerina." I still say that's one of the best pop songs ever written by anyone. And in a case of polar opposites, I spent hours listening to KRS-One's "Krush Them," from his latest joint, "The Sneak Attack."

"It's a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl", Faust

When I first heard this, I was drastically underwhelmend, but now I'm thinking that the lack of a peak is what makes it so great. Why couldn't the VU have sounded like this?

dleone, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nice pic on the Björk/David Arnold "Play Dead" track .. so beautiful ...

some songs, or little fragments of, go deeper than sticking in your head, they burrow into your brain and literally become a part of your consciousness. a riff or a motif may be so catchy that it echoes throughout your mind, or a song sometimes approximates how you feel about life, to the point where strains of it play when you're in a mood .... this happens to me with the Smiths quite a bit..

but one song that always comes back to me is "A Light So Dim" by the Black Heart Procession. Starts very lo-fi, like a drunken Oldham brothers jam, with mumbling and almost random instrumentation that sounds more like sloppy playing rather than polyphony. Then the piano rises, the production thickens, and you realize that's just the beginning of the song ...

"you'll be the lighthouse, in the storm ... I'll be the ship, filled with a thousand dead souls ... "

"Reflections" by The Supremes always warrants repeat listens, because it's built on the sound of an army of tambourines taking over the world.

fritz, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All I want to listen to right now is New York New York. It's starting to make me go mental.

ambrose, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A lot of the new Jay-Z album has me doing this right now: has hip-hop *ever* produced greater sonic drugs than "The Takeover" and "Girls Girls Girls"?

In the past: oh, many, many songs. Too many to mention, in fact. But one that particularly springs to mind as evocative of a particular time: the end of '95, in the snow, Saint Etienne's "I Was Born On Christmas Day".

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very very recently its been 5 Years by Bowie, just feel in love with the line about being in the song. Sorta cheating cause its a single but 8 Mile High by Hüsker Dü.

Weezer- Only in Dreams. The guitars in the chorus are inescapably *thick*: you are jolted out of the realm of idyllic lovesick teenage fantasy and violently awake to a crushing reality. And it's got the best guitar crescendo, evah. Incidentally, it's the only song that ever provoked a semi-conscious reaction from me: a week or so after purchasing the album, I was lying down, half-asleep with earphones wrapped around my head. When I heard "reach out our hands", I lifted my hand, not realizing what I was doing. Subconscious rock hurrah! Oh, to be Jung again.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 3 October 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

it's that whiplash percussion, isn't it? completely propulsive. the strings build from being inaudible to dominating the track to taking your head hostage. and that chord change is the clincher.

The climax part where he sings "I hope she doesn't mean it and she'll leave again without me, without me" sends chills down my spine.
