Stupidest tribute bands ever...

I just recently returned from a three-week trip to the UK, and I'm fascinated by your acceptance of corny tribute bands. There's a little of that in the US, invariably Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Kiss cover bands, doing it tongue in cheek. In the UK (and Australia), however, it seems like a real industry. I've seen ads for The Ugly Kid Show, a tribute to Ugly Kid Joe, whose only hit was a cover song. I've seen an ad for Young Neil & Horse Crazy... any other absurd ideas for "tribute" bands you've come across?

One issue of Volume invented a group called the Australian Stereolab. But I like that idea.

There used to be this really awful Doors tribute band called Crystal Ship that plied their, uh, "trade" along the Jersey Shore during the Eighties. Would be totally obscure to those outside of the New Jersey/New York/Philadelphia environs had it not been for being name- dropped in the Dead Milkmen's "Bitchin' Camaro."

Then there's the Nerdz, another Jersey Shore cover band that likes to do lots of Elvis Costello and Weezer songs (surprise, surprise). Forgot about them, until I saw a profile one of the Nerdz in my latest college alumni magazine.

"Only hit was a cover song?" Hello!! Not only was that cover song a million times better then the original, they also did that "I Hate Everything About You" song. Don't you be pissin' on Ugly Kid Joe. Hmph.

Jack, your taste is suspect and now I will put chewed-up gum in your hair and push you around.

Tributes... there is now a fad amongst local DJs to 'pretend' to be other more famous DJs, so Newport is currently full of "Zeb Fontaine" and "Phat Bouy Slim" and the like. Which takes tributes to new levels of stupidity. I'm still looking for other members for my Field Mice tribute band. Any takers?

Reiterating my post on Crystal Ship, is there anything more stupid and fucking pointless than

OK, my e-mail address is pretty stupid and fucking pointless ... but so are Doors tribute bands.

Who's Who are actually really good, despite having a bass player who looks NOTHING like John Entwhistle.

I hardly call it an acceptance - more of a bound and gagged tolerance.

Rumours that a massive Ian Svenonious fan has started two tribute bands, The Fake-UP, and The Imitation of Ulysses are unconfirmed....

Wot about ... Dread Zepellin!??!?!

Vaguely infamous in the UK in the mid 90s, Dread Zepellin were, as the name suggests, were a mix of dub reggae and Led Zepillin type bombast- except that they also had a Seventies Fat Elvis Impersonator (Who I seem to remember was called something like "TortElvis") as lead singer. Their main "hit" was a tortuous reggae/"Black Dog" style cover of "Heartbreak Hotel"...

The Ian Svenonious tribute bands are called the DElta 72 and the Mooney Suzuki.

I was visiting London last summer [I'm from Chicago] and staying with a friend in the New Cross area. I remember a place called The Venue that had cover bands for bands I didn't know warranted covering. There's many more than this, but off the top of my head there were cover bands for Madness, Ocean Colour Scene, and George Michael/Wham. Has anyone else seen this place? [Incidentally, I think that place used to play host to bands like The Fall and Beefheart in the early 80s].

yes, i have had the misfortune of visiting new cross venue. it used to have bands until about the mid 90s some time. but from then on it only had cover bands. the building also looks like its been burned on a daily basis to maintain that charred effect
