CKLN & CHRY present

Every so often, a young talent emerges that's so raw and exciting, they unwittingly knock everything in their path sideways and teach those older that it's time for them to move over. East London's Dizzee Rascal is one of them. Young, angry, articulate and frighteningly talented: 18 year-old Dizzee (aka Dylan Mills) is the voice of a brand new generation of overground-via-theunderground hip-hop/garage MCs from the U.K.

"Boy In Da Corner" is the heavily-anticipated full-length debut from the man they claim to be the future of black music in England. We are taken on a thought-provoking, at times humorous, journey through the eyes of a teenager growing up on the streets of East London. In addition to being an in-demand MC, Dizzee has become an in-demand producer, recently being tapped to work alongside The Streets, Ashanti, and Basement Jaxx. The UK press has been falling all over themselves in praise for this release. "Boy In Da Corner" is the WINNER of last year's prestigious UK Panasonic Mercury Prize, This will be Dizzee's North American performance debut - Toronto will be one of only two stops in North America on this tour (NYC being the other). He will be joined, on this show, by Toronto's only UKG crew, Flirt. Helmed by DJ Sassa'le and founded in 1997, the Flirt crew host a weekly radio show "Version X-Cusion" (Sat. 8pm-10pm, CKLN 88.1 FM). Sassa'le is currently working on his first full-length CD.

sassa'le was one of the original flirt canada djs iirc - they were probably the first north american group to push ukg in a big way, from '99 or so on.

cooper (cooper), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone been to the Mod Club Theatre before? It looks all swank-like.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope he's better than he was in Dublin. Biggest disappointment of 03.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i have absolutely NO interest in seeing this. the hipster quotient will be unfuckingbearable.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha *snugly fits ukg snob cap on*)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm hoping againt hope for a spring Jaxx/Dizzee US tour...

Brian Miller, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? The album has been available domestically in Canada since September.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jessica sadly OTM.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC? Fuck the glitz and glamma, Dizzee. Come to humble California.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone been to the Mod Club Theatre before?
what is the relation between mod club and revival - is it the same place¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the nyc show's Feb. 7 at Volume on N. 13th St. in Brooklyn, which i've never even heard of (Volume, not Brooklyn).

Andy, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think it used to be Revival.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in W'burg...the hipster quotient truly will be unbearable...

Liar (Liar), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

in that case, it was nice enough when i was last there.
although, should we be concerned about these "hipsters" the new yorkers are going on about¿ are they gigantic cannibals or something¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As if hipsters aren't the ones afraid of who might be there.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

they're more scared of us than we are of them, eh¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

are they gigantic cannibals or something

Only the hippest ones

Liar (Liar), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

they will devour your ukg cred - watch out!!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Let's all tell the hipsters where Jess lives (and that he has an advance of the Wiley album).

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

>Yeah, I think it used to be Revival.

No, the Mod Club Theatre is across the street from Revival - a simlar venue, though. Mark and Bobbi bought it with the buckets of cash they made from the chumps who so regularly went to Revival. Unfortunately, I know a lot about the history...

And yeah, Sassa'Le is a great DJ. He and the Flirt folks did a show when I had this ridiculous job running an internet radio station, and it was well wicked - Abacus was with them too. Good vibes. I am sad my other pal in the Flirt crew now lives very far away (Dubai).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet. i'll go to that brooklyn show.

and jess, you should go -- you used the 'eww hipsters' argument already for missing m. mayer. think up a new excuse, at least!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, lead from the front!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A little bird told me that Soundlab is booking the NYC show, who have a great rep, and seem to be putting together a great lineup & event.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't tell you how weird it is to read back bits of the biography i wrote for him, almost a year ago, as an american press release on the mighty ILM... eeek!

martin (martin), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, fudge. i wasn't paying attention. i think i'm going to be in london on the 7th.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Enjoy London, Lauren!

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And Martin...you da man now, dog!;)

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nah bruv Dizzee's da man now... wiley's about to buss too.

martin (martin), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel this is the perfect time for me to present to you my favourite review of Dizzee Rascal....from XLR8R #69:

I LUV U XL/UK/12
This record scares me. If I heard it in a rave, I would probably go and hide under a speaker. Dizzee Rascal rapping like some crazy agressive coked out Muppet over disastrous beats that are little more than grimy, ramped up Dilinja-style bass and a few breathy samples filling in for snare hits. This cheap sounding record is doing for UKG what Birdman and the Cash Money clique have done for rap. Plus, it'll grow on you like a motherfucker.

Hear, hear.

Please Mr. Rascal, can you keep your wailing to one Canadian city? Thanks.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

jokes

martin (martin), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

But cybele, isn't that review quite favourable in it's own small way?

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, that's how I feel too. I hate Dizzee Rascal and his childlike whiny pant of a "flow" (if you can call it that), but I'll nod my head dutifully when I hear it.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm v. skeptical that this will be a particularly GOOD show; it's more the novelty of seeing dizzee at this point in his career in my neighbourhood that's got me excited

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I personally would love to see Dizzee under any circumstances.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

well according to ronan it should be about as good as the wu show i saw in college where half of the showed up and stumbled about drunkly on stage restarting songs two or three times and flubbling lines left and right.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

never saw, indignant white people, etc etc.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, you'll be telling your grandkids all about that, I'm sure.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

live music sucks

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, i could get drunk and be around people i dont like if i stayed in my room and put the album on.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(and you can smoke in your bedroom)

kephm, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i am smoking right now in fact

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Elephant Ro-Man (Ronan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have yet to hear Dizzee Rascal. I don't think it's out yet in the U.S.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i am going though i don't post here often of course so no one will recognize me. has anyone been to volume before? what's it like?

j c (j c), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, can I pretend I'm you and get in for free?

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I went last weekend with a few other ILMers... it's a wicked place. Huge ceilings, main room is painted all white, has a real warehouse circa late 80s/early 90s feel (complete with half-finished bathrooms). Promoter is bringing in an actual truck rig with a flatbed in the middle of the room where the artists will perform from. Can't wait.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i have a +1 that might go unused. not sure though.

aaron, how big is it?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm goin'.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They supposedly had 1800 people there last friday.

I can't believe that I am fighting with the promoter for guest list spots for our media people and there are gonna be unused slots. Not pissed at you guys, just the promoter.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, sorry. forget i mentioned anything.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there, though the current plan is to get in and out for Dizzee and run back to my friend's bday party, though if that's dwindling when I leave I may stay for Matthew Dear.

Anyone know if the shuttle will be taking passengers in reverse - from Brooklyn to Manhattan?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 6 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume it would be... I mean, it has to go there to pick people up anyway.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

From Blissblog:

"Apparently Dizzee is making his American TV debut on February 10th--next Tuesday--on the Jimmy Kimmel show."

What is this? What station is it on?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone know if this would be a safe neighborhood to travel in alone (if female) ?

q (j c), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 8 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

people in talking about things they know shocker!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

*handbags*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have paid more attention to this...

I guess you've never been to a Soundlab party then... They always have great concepts, but it always winds up to be a bunch of people standing around watching the DJ.

The crowd dragged the whole thing down. Completely lifeless. Dizzee was really good tho and didn't seem fazed, keeping his own energy up. The music seemed more hiphop live and the rhymes were faster than on record I think. Some affecting a cappellas - I dunno if they were spoken word or just didn't have a beat yet - and he dropped the beat out of the the Brand New Day closer after the first verse and did pretty much the rest of the song a cappella. At least two songs I didn't know, one of which had a pretty great beat. The truck was a nice gimmick, aesthetically, but performing in the round just weakened the crowd further I think.

Don't remember the lyric exactly, but I heard something like "Do you wanna stay in the grime or do you wanna climb?"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 8 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I wonder what his shows in the UK are like. Did you catch when Dizzee called the audience "the trendy people"? Anyhow, I think I was stuck in a particularly bad part of the crowd. I was surrounded by 4-foot tall 18 year old NYU freshmen girls and this one guy who kept pumping his fist in the air but ended up elbowing me in the head about 50 times.

Matt Dear was a lot of fun. I didn't see any other ilx'ers except geeta, aaron w, carey, and andy though. i was the one with the grey hood on that made me look like an elf.

But the venue is great - is the truck a permanent fixture there or a one-off thing... cant wait until the kompakt thing.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone know if this would be a safe neighborhood to travel in alone (if female) ?

It's very safe. My girlfriend lives very close to there, she's never had any prblems.

hstencil, Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you're a little late, hstencil.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

so is the person wondering if Williamsburg/Greenpoint is "safe" or not. Just trying to help.

hstencil, Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee has never done a show in the uk as far as i'm aware. anyone know any different? lots of raves, but spitting 16 bars before passing the mic is not the same as a stage show.

''''''''', Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you catch when Dizzee called the audience "the trendy people"?

I heard that, but wasn't sure what the import of his comments were; I think that right before that he gave a shout-out to "all the journalists"?

Anyhow, I think I was stuck in a particularly bad part of the crowd. I was surrounded by 4-foot tall 18 year old NYU freshmen girls

Either we were in the same place, or there were a lot of these in the crowd.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 8 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine what a Bay Area Dizzee crwod would be like, probably terrible.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee opened for justin timberlake in london right before xmas

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping they were going to do a Summer tour together this year.

Dizzee did say at least twice something like "we'll be back in the Summer, prubobly"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummm, Dizzee opened for Jay Z at Wembley, of course.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

back in the summer to do it properly

had a blast - sorry I missed you there

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the front half of the crowd around the flatbed were well into it!

the back half was dead though, so I'm convinced this was due to them being out of line of the speaker stacks
even 10 to 15 feet back from where we were standing made a huge difference (subbass impact was key)

since it was hard to hear most of the lyrics (tough for newbies, though much of the crowd seemed to be hardcore fans),
a mix of sound-impact, proximity and surrounding vibe seemed to make or break the night
tellingly friends I was standing with had a much better time than the rest of our group further back
Simon was furthest back, right at the wall -
interested to hear his take

for me it far surpassed expectations (& I almost didn't go)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What was Dizzee's setlist like? How long did he perform?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Off the top of my head, he did... Vexed, I Luv U (which I think was first), Fix Up Look Sharp (which I think was last? Got the biggest reaction of the night), Brand New Day, Stop Dat (great bass), Jus a Rascal (also got a great reaction from the crowd)...no Seems 2 Be or Sitting Here. Set seemed to last about an hour. Dizzee and Marga Man looked like they were loving it. Slimzee, on the other hand, had a face like a torn arse. Played a very nice tune that I didn't recognize at the end of the set though. I was really struck by how Dizzee is. It was like watching my little brother on stage.

Anybody know that guy who kept grabbing the mic and asking the crowd to 'big up the DJ' in a cod- Jamaican accent? Somebody really needs to tell him how annoying he is.

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It was jess in disguise?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

shhh!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That guy was the promoter from Soundlab. I agree.

I think Dizzee was on for 45 minutes tops... The first couple songs were mixed really badly -- vocals totally muddled and the backing tracks barely audible -- but seemed to get sorted out (I didn't have the energy to push my way up front to see if Paul was right about it sounding better closer to the stage). I think part of the problem was that $25 ticket price and the hype of the show put on huge expectations, so the crowd had a real "Show me I wasn't just ripped off" vibe. Diz nailed all of his lyrics from what I could hear -- last verse of Just a Rascal was the one I thought he'd have trouble with but it was dead on. A capella raps were great as well. I dunno... for live hip-hop, it was about as good as it gets. It's more about his delivery than songs, for me at least.

Probably the best Matthew Dear live set I've heard, but I be biased.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, must say I found the crowd really energetic and into it in both places I watched from. Lots of movement, recognition, shared wowedness. The sound, too: variable by location for sure, but in the right spot was spot on. The whole thing exceeded my high expectations across the board. One of the best live shows I've seen in ages.

Dear rocked big-time, too. Didn't know he could build a set to a peak like that. People were losing it toward the end. And then Plexus as well, hard thick acidy techno. Was still churning good when I left at 4:30, happier than I'd even expected to be.

Andy, Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I had fun. Dizzee didn't disappoint. I apologize to everyone I elbowed in the head. The venue and the events were planned surprisingly well, and the only issues I had were exorbitant alcohol prices (my glass flask of vodka shattered before I left my house).

mosurock (mosurock), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

best surprise of the night was DJ Max Glazer, who preceded Dizzee with a fabulous ragga set which I enjoyed with a mixture of envy and awe.

I'd TiVo'd Rocker's TV the night before and showed the gang a clip of T.O.K.'s "Gal U A Lead" before we headed over - and here it was in his set. +PLUS+ Baby Cham showed for a live "Vitamin S" (YEAHR!), coincidentally another clip on the same program!!

Glazer was absolutely ON, DJing exactly as I'd want to ...except he actually already has MAD INSTRUMENTS riddim!

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

TOTALLY AWESOME. i had a fantastic time. being really close to the stage/truck really helped dizzee-wise. i thought he was great. i liked the crowd, too -- thought they were into it, everywhere i was at least. don't know about what it was like at the edges though. loved the music in both rooms.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 9 February 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the piece of glass that got wedged in my foot sometime around 4 am was a bit less awesome, but it's nothing that a good splash of vodka can't fix!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 9 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a piece of glass in my foot when i woke up this morning too, but I thought it was from my apartment.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)
