Is Coachella 2004 going to be the first outdoor rock fest I've attended in five years?

Possibly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was even thinking of going, even though I suspect the Pixies getting back together is a bad idea.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually think it's a terrible idea. And yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe the one and only dean gulberry and I will be in attendance..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually think it's a terrible idea. And yet.

It's people like you who back up traffic when there's a wreck.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Kraftwerk still worth seeing? Any word on who else will be there? The link billed the event as "eclectic"...Only in America would a bill of Radiohead, the Pixies and Kraftwerk be considered eclectic (not that there's anything horribly wrong with any of those acts but its not as if they booked bluegrass and crunk and grime)...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Kraftwerk still worth seeing?

By all accounts their shows here six years back were astonishing and people are already getting very hyped up over the tour -- two separate threads here, for instance! -- so it seems like it could be good.

Only in America

More accurately, surely 'Only on MTV'?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I was way there when I heard of LCD Soundsystem and a *possible* Pixies reunion. "Possible" meaning coming out of Thom Yorke's mouth quite a few months ago. Strange that I find MTV to be more reliable than Thom Yorke. Anyways, I'm there. I'd be there if it sucked. I love spending money.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX Coachella FAP ahoy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you bring the suntan lotion *wink*

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go if I get my own cabana.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And if gygax sings me to sleep every night.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If Gygax, Spencer and you were all in the same room together, would time and space implode?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

But seriously folks ... I'm not down on the Pixies reunion like everyone else. Frank and Kim have made Post-Pixies music that I've really enjoyed so I think they will at least be still in precise-pixies-order enough to put on a really great show. It's the studio album I'd be worried about ... and of course, the inevitable ego FITE. But as long as it happens after Coachella, then I'm good to go.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I have a scanned page from some mag where Thom spilled the beans on this sometime ago ... I'll link it when I get back to work tomorrow morning. Unless Bill wants to be a kind soul and do it for me now as I know he's still at work ... sucka ........

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure my friend Matt is flying from Chicago to see this. I would, too, but I have this problem where if I spend more than $20 to see live music, I have trouble enjoying it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yer not to be blamed, sir. I fear whatever the ticket prices will be for this thing (and hotel and etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I it was $140 last year for the weekend? I may be wrong on that. Hotel costs are a bitch ... and a waste of money. The show gets out at 1 AM and is going again at noon he next day so a hotel is a bit much considering you're just sleeping there. We stayed at a campground last year and it was great. Just give in to the weekend being drunk and dirty.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

*whimper* No showers, will I survive?

As it is I might just go the first day -- two friends of mine from work are also considering it but they have to work on the Sunday. We're waiting to see what the lineup is for the 2nd day and then will plan accordingly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some of it at work. Tomorrow, tomorrow.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be an ILE thread too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pixies *CONFIRMED*

http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2068510

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

no. it's not.

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I might go, obviously. Though my last festival experience was truly horrible...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If Gygax, Spencer and you were all in the same room together, would time and space implode?

I very much doubt it. I expect that the two of them would talk about music and California and whatever, and I would just sit there quietly like I often do in such situations.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

but if i was there too we could talk about Burnt Oak Greasy Spoons

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, this is all I've got:

May 01 - LCD Soundsystem, Pixies, Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Electric Six

May 02 - The Thrills, Death Cab For Cutie, Prefuse 73, Air, Sidestepper

I may have mixed up the LCD and AIR dates, but they'll be there at some point.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Add Sahara Hotnights and International Noise Conspiracy to that.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"LCD Soundsystem, Pixies, Radiohead, Kraftwerk"
simply not possible. i can't comprehend something this magnificent. why don't you throw in Lightning Bolt, Explosions in the sky, Stereo total, Chicks on speed, and a direct message from god concerning the meaning of life while you're at it.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereo Total was great last year. There was hardly anyone there.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

holy...fucking....

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

but if i was there too we could talk about Burnt Oak Greasy Spoons

Aaah, Burnt Oak Market. No better place to buy an oversized, poorly-printed Slipknot t-shirt in my opinion.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldnt worry about getting a hotel. Its so fucking hot during the day even if you shower in the morning youre just as greasy by noon as you were at 8 the night before.. camping is also more earthy. ie: dirty and drunken.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

May 02 - The Thrills, Death Cab For Cutie, Prefuse 73, Air, Sidestepper

Haha, Ned, I think you'll just need a hotel for one night in this case... unless they add My Bloody Valentine on May 2nd at the last minute.

(I think they sell one day passes for $50 or something? At least that's what I remembered from previous Coachella fests)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill, you need to be working, mister.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the UK ATPs are *MUCH* better

not for my money.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it was kind of underwhelming.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

To each his own, but I'd rather see "Boredoms" and Lightning Bolt that Radiohead.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

To each his own, but I'd rather see "Boredoms" and Lightning Bolt than Radiohead.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, me too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, me too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all quite strange... ATP UK has gone all mostly Amer-indie-loud where Coachella is all mostly Reading festival type stuff.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm already sold, but I imagine the latest rumor would be a big draw for many of you -- Coachella's close to announcing Dizzee Rascal.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Wooo Woooooooo

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck that I'm not going then.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm already sold, but I imagine the latest rumor would be a big draw for many of you -- Coachella's close to announcing Dizzee Rascal.

Shit, as if I wasn't conflicted enough. He'll be on at the crack of dawn on some tiny stage, though. But he'll play other shows in SF or LA, surely. I would drive down for an LA show.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No, there probably won't be any other LA shows around Coachella. Goldenvoice puts it on and I believe part of the agreement to play Coachella says that the bands can't play within a certain radius of Indio during a certain period of days surrounding the Coachella dates. This nixed a Polyphonic Spree in-store at LA Amoeba last year, IIRC.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

?

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i hear howie day's playing a free show of gospel tunes from a barge in the salton sea at dawn on sunday

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I'm there.

So I'm guessing this Glass House show is already sold out to hell and back.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't get the 1/3 comment.

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like there may still be tickets.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't get the 1/3 comment.

As in there might be *other* unannounced bands playing...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad someone appreciated that one, Ned.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I did get it. I was just hoping there was more to it.

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

THE BREEDARS DUDE

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It's good that they celebrate this out of the way festival with a similarly out of the way pre-party.

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Pre-pre-party at my place. If you think a bunch of sclerotic Germans and some Oxford wimps will be there, you don't know the one billionth of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Pre-pre-pre-party in a bum's asshole.

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Your name isn't Jon Williams.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

*ZING*

|OBEY|EYE|BO| (deangulberry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

>>Yeah, I did get it. I was just hoping there was more to it. <<

There is: There will be a bacalao cook-off, afterward.

Yeah, those 103 and 105 predictions for Indio make me pretty excited about being in Oxnard for the weekend.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just heard from a friend that apparently (and this is all conjecture, this could be inaccurate) that Kraftwerk and the Pixies are going to perform on different stages at roughly the same time.

So, if you absolutely love both bands equally and very strongly, I would recommend trying to catch one of them in a show of their own in the VERY near future before Coachella. Just a heads up (and possible false alarm)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(also that very near future is sold out)

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Also also, I read some bit about Thom Yorke having throat problems.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

excellent!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly.

dean raggett ha ha lol etc etc (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I doubt it'll come to pass, but can you imagine if they announced that they couldnt play the day of? - yuppie riot 2004. it would make woodstock 99 look like a sewing circle.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

somehow i doubt it. take the night off thom!

dan (dan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If the choice was between Kraftwerk and the Pixies -- welp, seeya Black F., I saw the Breeders do "Gigantic" last year in a small club and I was very happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

chules (chules), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like it will be Pixies vs. Kraftwerk vs. Radiohead, Kraftwerk being the bizitch in the middle. (Not all stages necessarily end at the same time) From the looks of it. Based on my experience at the last SoCal rock fest I went to, these sets start around 15 minutes apart.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm going to laugh really hard if they book Kraftwerk, Pixies, and Basement Jaxx on separate stages playing at the same time)
-- donut bitch (do...), January 16th, 2004.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(which is why I make it almost a rule to not go see big fests like this anymore. Half the bands I want to see I miss because they play synchronously)
-- donut bitch (do...), January 16th, 2004.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

now i'm hoping that thom's voice is ok to keep the riffraff out of the kraftwerk tent.

i like the idea of seeing the rapture, then stereolab, then the pixies, then kraftwerk.

i'll be there both days and would

dan (dan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and would love to meet anyone--write me.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If you have an extra ticket for Saturday, I'll meet you.;)

kickitcricket, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Set times are up. By the looks of this, it's Kraftwerk vs. Kool Keith & MF Doom or Electric Six or Phantom Planet.

I wonder why there's a gap after 10:30 on the main stage. (Honestly, I don't know.)

chules (chules), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

good to see the international noise conspiracy gets to play the 2 hours they deserve.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's going to be interesting to see how many people pass out from heat exhaustion at this thing. Have fun baking in the sun, kids.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

saturday's open spot on the main stage after 10:30 is for surprise guests dance disaster movement (i hope).

dan (dan), Thursday, 29 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dance Disaster Movement? Have they just hired the Strokes' PR or something? I remember the lead dude in an Orange County arty band called Radar.. and the drummer from Long Beach hardcore band Treadwell.

I heard a rumor of something secret and special after Radiohead - but who knows.

I ended up getting a ticket for Saturday, and I am worried about the heat (more on behalf of my girlfriend than myself). Why can't they do this thing in February or something?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What, are they going to get U2 to play after Radiohead?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 29 April 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

God is going to freestyle over some fat beats.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry. Phat beats.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny how Electric 6 are going right up against Kraftwerk. Go 4 it!!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead specifically requested a 10 minute gap so they could all get offstage and run and see Kraftwerk themselves.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 30 April 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God, I just realized who would be PERFECT to go on after Radiohead on the main stage: Morrissey! Not that I think this is happening or anything...

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 30 April 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Welp, looks like I'm going on Sat. I have to remember to bring the SPF 1000 sunblock.

I agree with Morris. I don't know why they don't hold this earlier in the year when it's cooler. And every year it seems to get hotter and hotter.

kickitcricket, Friday, 30 April 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

>I agree with Morris. I don't know why they don't hold this earlier in the year when it's cooler. And every year it seems to get hotter and hotter.<

It's a polo field re-generation thing, I've heard.
