4. Mike Kearsey on "My Sister" by Tindersticks
5. Nick Evans throughout Bill Fay's Time Of The Last Persecution album
6. Peter Zumma on Arthur Russell's "The Platform On The Ocean"

Why are trombonists so tall?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Re. Air "Ce Matin-La" - actually it's a tuba played in the higher octaves (Peter Woodcock).

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Phoebe!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you should mention trombones. This new nu-soul CD by Jeff Bradshaw looks like it could be okay, though probably too smooth for my taste.

In fact Nelson Riddle owns this thread.

He'll have to at least share it with Willie Colon (if we are counting salsa as pop, which I do, in the broad sense of the word).

Try these Willie Colon songs:

w/ Hector Lavoe:
"La Murga"
"Sonando Despierto"
"Pirana"

w/ Ruben Blades
"Pedro Navaja"
"Ojos"

(Though just about anything Willie Colon did in the 70's would be worth mentioning.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so tempted to post my own band on this thread. OK, I will: "Slow Down Chicago," Canasta.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ojos" temporarily fills my heart with love for humankind.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we allowed Freakpower? If so, put me down for "Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out".

Don Drummond to thread

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops didn't see the last part of the first post.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"I can't remember which Parliament song draws attention to an extremely overbearing trombone part with George Clinton claiming to like the 'bones."

That would be "Dr. Funkenstein."

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually hate horns in rock music. Am I right thinking I remember the first song on the Boo Radleys "Everything's Alright Forever" had a kick-ass trumpet part at the end??? Was it even a trumpet???

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, trombone

Pink Floyd's "Biding My Time" when performed live, Rick Wright the keyboard player plays the most hilarious amateur trombone part.

Check the Amsterdam '69 Boot.

Agreed on the Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life," but honorable mention to Thomas Dolby, "Hyperactive."

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 16 January 2004 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Even more honourable mention to Thomas Dolby's version of "I Scare Myself" (Peter Thoms out of Landscape).

Also the title track of OMD's Crush which is one of the best things they ever did (Graham Weir).

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 16 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think nobody's mentionned Serge Gainsbourg's glorious 'Black Trombone'

Stereolab!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO trombones on Benny Spellmans' great "Lipstick Traces."

And Fred Wesley's endless trombone solo on any number of James Brown/JBs recordings. He's only got one but it's a good 'un.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hate to say it, but the trombone solo on that one Sublime song was pretty okay.

Really, though, hardly anyone takes advantage of the trombone as the cannon that it can be.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Diane Ross's "I'm Coming Out" (an uncredited Meco) or Marvin & Tammi's "It Takes Two"?

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 15 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 15 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What Have I Done To Deserve This?, Pet Shop Boys.
The trombone was actually Chris Lowe's first instrument.

Palomino (Palomino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Duglas T. Stewart's cover of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" features a great, great trombone solo (that's not that hard to mistake for a trumpet, btw) by John Kenny.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Tindersticks. The not-knowing. Gotta be a trombone on there somewhere...

Dead End Street - Kinks. There ya go.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 16 April 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there trombone in "The Impression That I Get?" That's the first thing I thought of, although I wouldn't call it "the best use of trombone.." I just really like the song.

billstevejim, Friday, 16 April 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Obvious but unmentioned: "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35".

spittle (spittle), Friday, 16 April 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Phoebe answered the question absolutely correctly in the very first line:

1. Bruce Fowler on Beefheart's "Tropical Hot Dog Night"

What possible purpose can be served by further debate?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 16 April 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Upsetters - V/S Panta Rock

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, it's a trumpet. I'm an idiot.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe there's a trombone (in addition to musette) in Pere Ubu's "George Had A Hat".

Oh, and Caravan's "Golf Girl" has some nice stuff.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)
