it's tragic. great music but the vocals just ruin it for me.

phunktion, Friday, 16 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

which song were you listening to?

i don't see how their vocals are any worse than joy divison really

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, don't get me started....

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The vocals might not be worse, but some of those lyrics!
(But I kinda like ACR, and I know what you're saying, phunktion)

peepee (peepee), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked 'em well enough. but i'm in the ned "i don't pay much mind to lyrics anyway" camp.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the desultory vocals on the early stuff (shack up! hahahaha) have you heard sextet: proper girly vocals on that one.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm specifically talking about 'the graveyard and the ballroom' and other early stuff. i'm not much for listening to lyrics. i mean the quality of the singing/voice. it is very joy division'ish and who i'm not a big fan of either. i'm really into the postpunkfunk and it makes me wish for an instrumental version of the album. oh well maybe it maybe i can learn to tune it out

phunktion, Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

so what postpunkfunk vocals DO you like? and why?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

anything that hooks up to the groove and is not a croony moan. if often feels dissonant to me.
esg, liquid liquid, bush tetras...

phunktion, Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the US stuff?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Are there two different versions of 'Shack Up'?

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Sunday, 8 May 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Ooh - good question!

I only know the original version (flawless, doesn't need anything done to it, time is 3:16) but apparently there was a 1994 12" release on Creation that had some mixes of it:

Tracklisting:
A1 Shack Up (Wipe Out Mix) (6:06)
Remix - Electronic
A2 Shack Up (Radio Edit) (4:21)
Remix - Electronic
B1 Shack Up (Work Mix) (6:06)
Remix - Electronic
B2 Life's A Scream (Shaven Not Stirred Mix) (6:01)
Remix - Andy Connell

Bis also did a cover of "Shack Up", which I haven't heard either.

*tedious trainspotter post alert*

In addition to any remixes, the Factory Benelux 7" and the Factory US 12" versions of the original have different 'fades'.

But a very welcome tedious trainspotter post nevertheless.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

The version I've got on mp3 (no other info) has got loads of echo, and sounds almost like inverted funk. Must be a live version I guess; I'd previously assumed the clapping etc was just to get a live feel, rather than actually having being recorded at a concert. Whatever, it's amazing.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Ah, well the original version does sort of have a "live feel" - but it occurs to me there IS a live version of it on the Live In America album (1985) which a little bird told me will be reissued soon.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

tweet tweet muthafucking tweet.

:)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised no one has tried to list all the versions of Shack Up, being ACR's was a cover itslef if I understand correctly.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know the name of the Certain Ratio song that mentions angels and demons in the lyrics repeatedly? Wasn't able to Google, but I'm pretty sure I have the right band...

Ha ha, well the bird got a lot bigger all of a sudden. Did someone say Big Bird? (Anyway, I considered mentioning you by name grimly but wasn't sure if it was an instance where that would have been okay with you)

Yes, that is correct, and well spotted. However, the original wasn't done by ACR, which renders it completely irrelevant. Next!

Yikes. Now that doesn't ring a bell at all. I do know of a fabulous Echo & The Bunnymen song called "Angels and Devils", though.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

The Passage 'Devils and Angels'??

'Lucinda', innit

DG (D_To_The_G), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

not sure if anyone else has picked up this recently .. but the live cassette that used to be available from ACR gigs in the late 80's is being reissued by Melodic ..

been years since i heard the cassette .. but i do recall it being bloody great ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's the same live recording the little/big birds were tweeting about a few posts ago. I had it on one of those gig-only cassettes too, but I think it wore out / jammed up, so the chance for a CD upgrade is most welcome.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

And of course LTM are rereleasing ILTSYA (this month) and Live in Groningen (July IIRC).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd Like To See You Again's my fave of their albums - though I had the same reaction as my friends (ugh...) when I first heard it in '82. the title track soon won me over and there was no going back.

Rust Red September and Blue Bell Knoll are 2 other examples (to quite a lesser degree of disgust) where I was initially disappointed with artists for going 'too slick', then grew to love the album as their best.
