Attention Melbourne!

Me and a few friends will be performing next Wednesday (the 21st) at Loop in Meyers Pl (off Bourke St) in the city. There live component will be ambient, abstract soundscape made up of field recordings. There will be a couple of DJ's playing oldschool (tasteful) techno and house, as well as a whole lot of other great stuff.

I encourage you all to come along because a) it's free, b) it'll be great fun, and c) you get to see me do my thang with laptops and headphones! Not to be missed, I tells ya!

Press release follows:

Attention: producers and appreciators of experimental electronic music. This Wednesday, the 21st of January, marks the beginning of a new era in Melbourne's experimental scene. On this date commences the inaugural Archipelago: a monthly evening of glitch, sound art, and other unclassifiable aural and visual experiences.

Archipelago
Wednesday 21st Jan
8pm - late @ Loop
23 Meyers Pl
(free entry)

Hyperbole aside, Archipelago is a movement dedicated to discovering and promoting the plethora of local electronic producers. Anyone and everyone with interests experimental are encouraged to attend.

Performing live this Wednesday are sound artists NKVD: the Melbourne-based duo who've produced under various guises for more than four years. After two years of travelling the world collecting field recordings, their latest project aims to create a rich sound collage that will find you engulfed in a sea of texture and ideas.

Also playing will be DJ System with a selection of classic techno and house, and Kerbalay with his unique mix of microhouse, dancehall, and hiphop.

Loop, the hybrid bar/art-space on Meyers Pl, will be playing host - and no better venue exists. "There's a touch of dedication in Loop... [they've] taken [their sound system] seriously, and ensured delivery of deep, clean bass. The interior feel is dim, with huge projector screens adorning the walls that show slides or weird and wonderful videos to go along with the music. Seats are plentiful, and soft and veloury." (Mark Davies, melbournepubs.com)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerbalay with his unique mix of microhouse, dancehall, and hiphop.

A unique mix indeed... sounds difficult!

ocp (OCP), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah! Volcano High Monday, Andrew DJing weds and Tuggers Friday... y'all are trying to kill me, aincha.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget La Haine on Tuesday...

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a 1-minute piece of instrumental music as an intro to one of the films in La Haine that was recorded by the guy currently recording the 'boat (coincidences wahey)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no way in hell I could fit La Haine in with everything else.

Why o why didnt I take a week off here instead of at xmas *sobs*

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, yes, this sounds awesome

i guess I should call you, or visit you in Brunwick, or something. Hmm, maybe tonight...

Rob McD, Friday, 16 January 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

coming soon...

(lazy bastard) :-)

Rob McD, Friday, 16 January 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The music and cultural life in Melbourne was so poor that, after living there for 4 years, I had to flee. I hate that city. Does brutal techno still reign supreme? And are there still no decent hip hop clubs?

Still, your project sounds interesting. Good luck.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The music and cultural life in Melbourne was so poor

no offense, but either you're taking the piss or you're insane.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds great. I've always wanted to go to Melbourne. *sniff*

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it really "the San Francisco of the Antipodes"?

[insert jokes here]

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And are there still no decent hip hop clubs?

Still...

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 17 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a great pity mebourne does not necessarily copy the world as regards what "culture" is

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you going to tell us that NZ has some better clubs then, paulhw?

Mood, Saturday, 17 January 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the greek scene MUST be pretty cool though?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a great pity mebourne does not necessarily copy the world as regards what "culture" is

urge to get cranky rising

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the culture is there. blame the greater population of melbourne for the fact it doesn't get very far

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne has a LOT of problems but frankly it has a lot less than most places. sydney has some better bands but a much worse live scene. don't get me started on other australian towns.

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

form a great band! watch melbourne not give a toss! they only want to hear bluetones and sonic youth cover bands! wahey!

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you can feel free to call me bitter til you're blue in the face now ollie

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what else can i whine about while i'm really drunk? oh yeah. the beautiful few and heligoland and clare bowditch should all be fucking huge, please explain melbourne!!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

at this point i've long since assumed nobody's listening anymore

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you all really hate me now don't you?

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

perfect. i still love you.

(and my "great pity" post was a defence of yr not having fucking hip hop clubs jim.)

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(as in what other 98% white city which shits all over its indgenous "black" population still has clubs called things like "chocolate city" and clubmag social pages which feature hiphop sixpack stomachs and fawning rich bitches moaning fitty fitty fitty?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fair point the kids. i have literally no idea whatsoever about melbourne's hip hop coverage

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, seriously, melbourne is fine but the MACDONALDS there sucks, i might have to leave. also the KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN is soooo bad. makes ya wanna live someplace else.

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

point taken! i don't know that of what i whine about!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll look after yer records jim, no problem ;-)

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 17 January 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mullygrubber, have you been to Madizms at the Laundry on a Monday? It's not very much in yer Groovalicious/Chocolate City mould. Occasionally gets a bit furrow-browed for my tastes but still good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Andrew at least it took the thread back to the top of New Answers (and Jim entertained us while at it, hee)

I still hope to make it Weds, but I had forgotten I had a friend's birthday dinner to also attend at some hippy veg restaurant in Fitzroy that I forget the name of (lentil as anything or veg out or something fuck knows). If not too full/tired after that I'll see if I can swing by.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't Tim, that was just a bit of drunken ranting. i actually love us hiphop.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Just giving this thread a bump for more visibility.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, i guess i started all this. no, haven't been in NZ for a while, and (even though i started it) the idea of one place having more "culture" than another is kind of stupid. BUT, if you're talking about appreciation/participation/funding of the arts, Melbourne does fine, as do a lot of larger Western cities.
For me, what it doesn't have is a determined sense of style, an interesting band scene, a club scene that transcends house/progressive with people on E. (and i always find it annoying in this kind of thread when people cite exceptions. of course there are. there is a general point).
anyway, i found it a city where people copy NYC fashion (seriously, that early 80s new romantic thing hit hard, at least among females), have no good hip hop clubs, and little interesting rock n roll.
the art scene is stagnant, since ricky swallow (98) and people like Patricia Puccinini. I know my experience is highly individual, but I really think it's just an overgrown Adelaide, without the nice gardens.
I live in NYC, but it's no big NYC thing...it's just why I had to leave.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

hope you found less people copying the new york fashionistas, a few good hiphop clubs and some interesting rock'n'roll then!

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne rock and roll does indeed largely suck, yeah. it does pop a lot better.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, jim, can you name some current "rock" which doesn't suck ?

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mullygrubber, have you been to Madizms at the Laundry on a Monday? It's not very much in yer Groovalicious/Chocolate City mould. Occasionally gets a bit furrow-browed, or my tastes but still good.

oh yeah, nice one Tim. And Wednesdays at Honktonks is pretty good too (er, despite the venue.)

OCP (OCP), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So Paul Williams?

For the record, Melbourne does have some interesting developments in soundart that I actually think are kind of unique. The Synaesthesia axis that seems to be developing w/ Liquid Architecture, What is Music? (national, I know but still has the *Best* coverage here), etc. - see the recent feature in the WIRE for a very brief overview. Yes, much of this does develop out of the state funding, but is very independently minded in addition.

Since you've finished the PhD though. Melbourne has also MANY bars that have opened in the city centre with the relaxing of the licensing regulations. There are a lot venues like loop that offer space for small performances beyond 'progressive djs and pills'.

In any case, the prog DJ's centered around DMC are moving into microhouse anyway and the techno scene w/ Will E Tell and Wet Music is kind of completely dead now.

Almost any city is going to look like 'an overgrown Adelaide' compared to NYC, btw. It's a ridiculous point of comparison!

Mood, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah,

And apparently everyone has been copying 'NYC fashion' of late, part of a global trend that New York types seem to want to lay ownership on - see, 80's revivalism and Larry T?

Mood, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i always find it annoying in this kind of thread when people cite exceptions. of course there are. there is a general point

How can you compare a city like Melbourne to NYC (which is two orders of magnitude smaller) without citing minority sectors? That's the whole point, isn't it?

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I was gonna say... if we have exceptions, we have the scene, its not like Melbourne's THAT large. Bloody 'ell.

World doesnt begin and end with dance club type clubs, either. If that alone is a measure of culture then I don't wanna bother with NYC.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention that I don't have a single friend that frequents these supposedly omniprescent progressive house clubs.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Omnipresent only for an ex-Prog House DJ perhaps?

Mood, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Which prog house DJs/clubs in Melbourne play microhouse?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yay the melbourne, er, massive.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, have you been into DMC recently?
Featured on the wall - Matthew Dear, Villalobos, Michael Mayer, lots of Perlon, etc.

Apparently, the crew around Vicious Vinyl are really getting into it especially following the release of Mayer's Fabric Mix (which was distributed by DMC). There's that night Elevation@Altitude, that I haven't been to yet (nor am I likely to go), that is supposed to be more micro orientated. Don't expect it to be completely free of the proggy sound though.

I had a chat to the staff at DMC about three weeks ago - there's a couple of other nights they mentioned that I've forgotten the names of now. I'm not especially into the progressive sound anyway, but I found that it was an interesting/encouraging development.

That guy behind that counter positively glowed when speaking of Alcachofa...

Michael Dieter, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does this sound like the "Melbourne sucks, cos the goth clubs play nothing but EBM" argument over on usenet? *bemused grin*.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Reminds me of the center/periphery debate from last year...

Mood, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

...only much less compelling.

Mood, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael, Where's DMC in Melbourne these days? There was one on or near Commercial Rd right? I hardly ever went there seeing as I never had a turntable until recently.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, commercial rd. Near the corner of Chapel.

Michael Dieter, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Right over the road from Octave Records and One-Stop-Deejay!

And by the way, Melbourne's soundart/experimental etc scene is growing rapidly, and some say that is actually comparable to NYC in that respect, because of the number of available venues and the number of people interested. You walk around the CBD and there are heaps of art spaces, such as Medium, the Bus Gallery, Market Lane (forgotten the name of that one) and others that regularly hold curated nights of sound and other avant shite. And plus, there is no place in NYC like Synaesthesia.

And another thing! Whitehouse, Merzbow and Keiji Haino's Fushitsusha are coming next month, and then Tony Conrad in June, as well as a large host of others. So yea!

Rob McD, Friday, 23 January 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no place in NYC like Synaesthesia.

really?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no place in NYC like Synaesthesia.

I find that really, really difficult to believe. I would've thought something like that must exist. Then again, you've been to NYC more recently than I.

Also I want to thank everyone that came along on Wednesday. It was a pretty good night, despite the large amounts of stress I was under. (I think my performance suffered because of it, unfortunately.)

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hey jim theyve named a club nite after you:

NOONDAY UNDERGROUND (UK) present SURFACE NOISE @ PHOENIX, THURSDAYS

Noonday Underground bring a taste of their London club night to Melbourne, playing records Thursdays at Phoenix, 82 Flinders St, City.

Noonday Underground brought you their debut long player ‘Self Assembly’ in 2002 with its radio friendly cut ‘London’, and followed it merely months later with the sublime ‘Surface Noise’. Featuring guest contributions from the likes of the legendary Paul Weller and Luka (Playgroup) “Surface Noise’ touched on elements of soul, jazz and hip hop, collaged together in an altogether inspired way.

The ‘Surface Noise’ nights with live bands and guest DJs was a popular Thursday night thing to do last year in east London. Noonday Underground look forward to giving Melbourne a little taste of the action.

Thursday 29th January – basically 12”s 10:30pm – 12:00am
Thursday 5th February – basically 7”s 10:30pm – 12:00am
Thursday 12th February – basically Beatles with bits in-between 10:30pm – 12:00am

Enjoy three Thursdays free at Phoenix. Noonday Underground look forward to making your acquaintance then.

minna (minna), Friday, 23 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm THERE

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 23 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no place in NYC like Synaesthesia.

hmmm....There probably isn't!

Synaesthesia was in a list of the top five record stores in the the world in The Face a couple of months ago with Amoeba and Rough Trade (and.... I can't remember the others!)

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

thats right!

'twas what i was about to mention. The only problem was, and the reason why Mark didn't really give a shit, was that anybody who walks through his door probably wouldn't touch The Face magazine if their life depended on it - especially considering the fact that an extreme close-up of Beyonce was on the front cover.

And yes, there IS no place in New York like Synaesthesia - and like you all, i also found it really, really difficult to believe. But its true. And not just the store, i'm talking about the size of the local scene! 50 years ago you have guys like Lamonte Young droning for 12 hours with Fluxus, and the 'New York School' jumping from loft to loft, and now the legacy of it all is comparable to a little town like Melbourne! And that doesn't even mean its that bad, it just means that, like we've all been trying to tell you, Melbourne is definately something, even if we don't have any really good hiphop clubs.

Rob McD, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember if we've talked about this or not, Keith, but there were a bunch of guys who had a Grime night on Chapel St. for a few months earlier this year where they'd play 8 bars and get up on the mic and recycle Beastie Boys rhymes circa Licence to Ill (well, I remember someone doing Paul Revere over "Ho" anyway....)

OCP (OCP), Monday, 9 August 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Help me out here - need a list of 6 or so by tomorrow.

Thanks!
