fun for parties, getting high, communal listening, being "blown away" by octaphonic barking dogs and buzzing bees. but, there are actually some worthwhile tracks--Your Invisible Now, for example--that make the audio trickery even more worthwhile. i've had some very pleasant experiences listening to this cd.

Advice - Soulseek this kind of thing - it's try before you buy time.

PS - if you love the songs you can find mixed down versions on the web for the down to earth times

I heard mixed down versions don't sound good

I went to a Zaireeka party about a month ago. It was extremely dull, however I think it had something to do with spending time with obsessed lips fans.

It will be something you own, and pick up every now and then. When there is enough people interested to try. I have hardly played my copy, but it's fun to see how CD players don't keep time.

Seems to accumulate in value, though.

I think the cover art is lovely. If that's a swinger at all...

In September, I listened to Zaireeka with my friends. It was fun. I was stoned. It was late at night. But it /was/ fun.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The mixed down versions obviously don't sound as good - but it allows you to play the songs more than couple of times - this can be considered useful.

I have listened to discs individually, and I have listened to a CD I made where I combined the tracks (no tweaking - just a straight overlay.) I have never listened to the thing as it's meant to be ... it seems pretty geeky to do it in a living room. I would be interested to hear it in a large space, where you can move around to change the dynamics... But hell if I'm going to the trouble ..

Absolutely one of the greatest albums I've ever heard in my life. You WILL go mental when you hear the barking dogs. God I love that band.

Possibly great, but, I mean, how do you actually play the record????

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir: WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been to a number of Zaireeka parties, one of them at a large recording studio with about 150 other people. It's fun to listen to while you're milling around between the various sound sources.

J (Jay), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's my second favorite Flaming Lips album, behind The Soft Bulletin. So, worth it.

Kareem Estefan (Kareem Estefan), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I can only hear out of one ear, whether the music is coming out of eight speakers or two, it's ALL MONO. Needless to say Zaireeka parties have been kind of more blah than for other folks because of it. If you love the sound of a voice saying "1...2..4!3.." followed by a chorus of "fuck!"'s, then you'll love a State College Zaireeka party.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony - if you spin round really fast then you'll get it in octophonic sound. Or something.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually e-mailed Dave Fridmann about it once and he recommended I spin around in an office chair, or put the CDs in different rooms and just walk around. The first option seems like it would inspire dizziness more than anything (which might actually make the album sound more psychedelic - what the hey), and the second require me to actually buy this album...and 2 more CD players.

I love the album, but that's so OTM it's scary!

J (Jay), Saturday, 17 January 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I bought it......man it's awesome.
I played it in 4 cd players.
1. My Stereo
2. Xbox
3. A CD Walkman Connected to My Brothers Small Guitar Amp
4. Another Stereo

Completely Awesome
I Really liked the drum solo on "March of the rotten vegetables"

I also listened to it one cd at a time on headphones and it was still great. This is now one of my favorite albums ever

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
what's that about cd players not keeping in sync?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty minor, and doesn't make that much difference (cometimes it makes none), but it's a symptom of the error checking routines that all CD players have. I think 95% of the synchronisation variation in your average Zaireeka playback comes from human randomness though, rather than from the machines.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

it's pretty noticeable if you try to let the album play all the way through instead of re-syncing after each song

dmr (Renard), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

eight years pass...
