Generic Rap Song

"Generic Rap Song by Princeton student. An excellent undergrad piece that lampoons the current state of rap music. Includes a satirical rap song (complete with downloadable MP3, streaming audio, downloadable DivX video, and streaming RealVideo) and an analysis of each verse. Even an essay that compares the satire in the piece with some 200 year-old satire ("A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift). Amazing, accurate, and funny as all get out."

I saw this posted elsewhere and thought some of you would be interested. Because of my computer limitations, I haven't seen the video or heard the song, so I'm passing this on to yous and I'll check back later to see what you have to say.

Sean Paul has two major follies that make him the easiest target in this song. First, he claims to be of Jamaican descent, although he's obviously white (and is often shown in poor lighting to compensate-- see "Baby Boy" Music Video, ACD Data Track). Second, his lyrics are virtually indecipherable as a result of his thick "JAmaican" accent and the speed at which he delivers them.

"P. Diddy gets the final words in “Generic Rap Song” by plugging his rap label at the last possible second, when the listener least expects it. This joke hits even harder in the video, as Diddy appears even after the closing “credit” has been shown in the bottom
left corner and the video has faded to black. It appears as though even P. Diddy was startled by this final plug, as he is clearly making it from the comfort of a toilet stall."

"After a few minutes of the same old song, J-Lo flips over and reveals her true “talent”-- an inhumanely large backside. It is soon revealed that this particular hook in fact stars “J-Lo’s Ass” rather than J-Lo herself. This is a directorial attack on rap videos in general, which often contain extended shots of large female backsides that are built to look as though their existences are simply coincidental. Here, the fact that the ass is meant to be shown is brought out into the open, and the viewer has a few seconds to realize that this really isn’t much different than most real rap videos."

"Romeo goes on to insult his own father’s rap skills and concludes by heading out to a sleepover with Michael Jackson, a one-time child star who has recently come under allegations of child molestation. While this may seem like a pointless side-attack on Michael Jackson,
Lil’ Romeo actually sampled a Jackson 5 classic for his biggest hit, “My Baby” (APC, track 6). The music video for that song contains several shots of Lil’ Romeo with a Michael Jackson look-alike (APC Data Track). In light of recent events, those scenes turn the young boy’s music into an unintentional work of satire in itself. We simply drive the point home."

I'd like any rap fan out there to tell me who wrote the music to any rap song (and none of those fucking cheap puffy songs count, cause he always just uses other peoples music, thus ruining the original song because his new "lyrics" fucking suck). I mean who wrote the MUSIC, not the lyrics, which are written by the stupid ass rappers. I'll tell you who wrote the music, a bunch of people you've never heard of in your life, and never will, who know how to operate drum machines and computers. Basically, the rap "artist" asks them to make a real "phat" beat, they do so until its "phat" enough, then the rapper dubs in the lyrics over it. Ever notice that at rap "concerts" theres about 30 people in the background, aside from the fucking stupid rapper and the 90 backup dancers, that you've never seen in your life? Those would be the people I'm talking about.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Paper stupid. Okay we all get it and we all agree.

Still, it's kind of condescending to always, in every instance, point out or force connections between rap and blackness. Some people seem to insist that rapping unavoidably expresses blackness -- that, like it or not, your rapping is somehow about your being black. Wouldn't it be stifling to know that your music and the discourse surrounding it is going to be evaluated with your race in mind no matter what?

Granted, it makes sense that attacks of anti-rap stuff mention race because the anti-rap stuff itself -- even if it doesn't clobber you over the head with it -- often has strong racial undertones. Still, the "anti-rap = racist" line is kind of exhausting. I don't object to its truthfulness so much as I do the implications of its constant usage.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

In response to the original thread:

1. I'm printing these out as solid proof to all those that did not believe me before-- those dicks who got better grades then me in high school were NOT necessarily smarter! I said it before, you just do the busy work with diligence and you can get into Princeton, but that doesn't mean you're not still a fucking idiot. Now me, I may be lazy, but I would never turn out this piece of shit.

2. I think the reason this is so unfunny is because it's not really taking on a sacred cow. Satire is best when it's making fun of something supposedly holy. Swift took on the English, these guys are taking on Ja Rule.

3. There's a lot of room to work with here. I mean he could call a lot of mainstream rappers on the blatant sexism prevelent in most videos (Side note: Anybody hear about that member from the East Side Boyez, where he said in an interview in some new Hip Hop/pornography cross over magazine (Yep) that he had sex with a girl with a broken leg and made her walk home?), but in stead he just spits out nonsensical gibberish, like claiming Sean Paul is white (I can list at least 10 things wrong with that one) or something about J. Lo's ass.

4. The worst part is, for a satire, there's really no humor. Maybe it got a laugh when he showed it in his dorm to 4 of his friends, but the overwhleming aura of egotisitical prickhood totally trumps anything that would make it funny.

I'll go into more about this as I continue my hatred of different music types which pollutes my noise."

I actually went to high school with one of these guys, and I find it kind of funny that they aren't taking this thing NEARLY as seriously as some of you are. The only reason it's online is because they submitted the project via the 'net, yet they've somehow pulled in over 25,000 hits in just a few weeks after only sending the link to a few people (myself included). You might not think it's funny, but somebody out there sure does. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but you should at least acknowledge that just because you personally don't find a work of satire or parody amusing doesn't make it illegitimate.

This isn't senior thesis material, granted, but it's just a small project for an entry-level English course made by two sophomore engineers making an attempt at a humorous work because it was assigned to them. They don't claim to be funny or brilliant, and whatever impression of that nature that you get from the site is simply part of the joke. The store, the arrogant picture, it's all part of the joke. You seem to be more into this project than they ever were. It's a total spoof, lighten up.

two years pass...
wow. it's so weird how people can get worked up about hte simplest things (rap singers?) cos it was JUST A MOVIE. jeez. it's not like it was offensive or anything. personally? i thought it was hilarious. and just in case anyone wants to tell ME i have no life i want to tell them FIRST THEY have no life for bothering with the whole thing. can't just go around telling people their racist just cos they posted one FUNNY MOVIE on a public messageboard.
so there.

DISCLAIMER: all my opinions, ok, so u wanna get up someone don't get up anyone ok?
