Buying Music Online S&D

I've been looking for a place to find sort of obscure (for the American audience, at least) releases online. Specifically, I'm looking for Michael Mayer's Fabric 13 and Supersilent 6. I can't really seem to find them anywhere online for less than $30 and St. Louis record stores don't carry either of them.

So, anyone have any suggestions for places to buy music online? Am I just looking in the wrong places (eBay, Amazon, etc) or am I just SOL?

Try Insound and Forced Exposure.

Good luck.

Try www.bentcrayon.com or forcedexposure.com They have both been great for me and they carry both those titles I believe.

Insound (www.insound.com) stocks a lot of obscure releases. They show one Supersilent CD for $17, temp. out-of-stock.

ear/rational is out of stock on both right now but they are listed at $20 and $14.50 respectively. write dave as he is real easy to deal with and he may be able to order them for you.

Half.com has Fabric 13 available, for $20.

When all else fails, try www.gemm.com.

Forced Exposure is great.

I thought Bent Crayon was a pain in the ass to order through, maybe they have improved, I haven't used them after the one time.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Forced Exposure looks to be exactly what I was looking for. Insound seems to be really nice as well.

As a follow up question, where's the cheapest place to order not so obscure music online? Should I stick to the big'ns like Amazon/eBay/Half.com?

stephen morris, Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

darla and tonevendor are easy to deal with.

How long before buying CDs in shops becomes something we do "for old time's sake"?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It feels like that now.

I like Darla too. Dusty Groove is the greatest record store in the world if you're into Soul/Jazz/Funk/Hip-Hop/Lounge/Reggae/French/Soundtracks, I visit their site everyday and think I've died and gone to heaven. Shipping's a tad pricey though.

tip: Cheap stuff mainstream, try http://www.hmv.com.au Australia, or http://www.sanity.com.au

Give it a look/see...

My favorite online stores are Forced Exposure, Other Music and Aquarius Records. For hip hop 12"'s try Sandbox Automatic. And I still enjoy Amazon.

So am I right in thinking that FE only charges $4.50 for the entire shipment, and not per item? Their checkout interface only shows the subtotal that excludes shipping.

Rough Trade can go fuck itself. How difficult is it to have web server running more than 40 hours a week? does it demand cigarette breaks too?

FE = Forced Exposure

i know, my rant is completely separate

Yes, with FE it's $4.50 per order shipping, whether you are order 2 CDs or 20.

a LOT of those fabric CD's can be purchased as promos.

I got Fabric 13 for £2.99 (in card sleeve) i won't say where because it's probably skirting legality in some places and I wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble. use the googleforce.

itchy bits, Monday, 21 February 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I got Fabric 13 for £6.99 from actionrecords.co.uk before Christmas. I don't know if it's still the same price, but mine is the metal case version.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 21 February 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and it's worth noting that actionrecords subtracts the VAT from the price, so it was actually about 6 pds (or something like that).

any thoughts on www.insound.com?

reliable?

djh, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

They've been around forever, haven't they? I'm sure they're reliable. Not sure why you'd order from them though. They've never seem to have anything particularly cheap and/or rare to me.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

They appear to have a CD that I can't find anywhere else. Am in the UK, so never heard of them before ...

djh, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah they were one of PFork's original sponsors (used to have Buy links on the site IIRC.) I'd go for it if it's unfindable anywhere else.

Insound used to have unique tour CDs. I have a Versus and, I think, John Vanderslice tour EP from them. Their forthcoming release list is useful.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

I have the Rapture one. They were like the first indie-rock webstore and for a while were super influential.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

For US stuff (indie/punk vinyl mainly) I have used Vinyl Collective http://www.vinylcollective.com/ - excellent service & quick dispatch. Postage ain't cheap (to NZ anyway, tho this isn't a specific problem with VC) but I can still land LPs for cheaper than I can get them here in the shops.

For UK vinyl I use Norman records http://www.normanrecords.com - always good service & quick dispatch.

Bill E, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

One I use, and can highly recommend, that hasn't been mentioned is Second Layer: http://www.secondlayer.co.uk/

krakow, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

if you're looking for used stuff (and new too, i suppose), reckless records in chicago is very cheap, stock constantly turns over (1,000s of new items per day, sometimes), and shipping is $6 whether you are ordering 10 or 100 things. (i think it's a bit cheaper if you're only ordering 2 or 3.) their inference is pretty old school but i enjoy that. and you can search by genre or format, or to see what's come in, in the past 1, 2, 3, or 10 (etc.) days.

amateurist, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

i order from them like once every one or two weeks.

amateurist, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for answers re insound.
