Anyone heard this yet? I like the album and love the single, and video--Timbaland looks like he's standing there trying to figure out how to fire Magoo and replace him with this guy.

M. Matos, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Raise Up" was underwhelming as an mp3 (production indistinct, Petey a bit too blary/bleary/blustering) but it's awesome as a video. The chorus really comes to life and the production sounded really interesting if comparatively subtle, so I'm going to try and download it again to see if I can get an improved version. And you're right: it's the look on Timbaland's face (as well as the helicopter shirts) that really make the video and remind you that you're not watching "Country Grammar" for the hundredth time... And I've heard really good things about the album - any more details on that score?

Tim, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't have it yet, but the album is supposed to come out in three weeks' time. Meanwhile, let' s hear it for Bubba Sparxxx...

Yo friend Jason

Jason Perry, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jason.

I'ma just tell you what my daddy told me from his death bed. He lay there, still and quiet, his eyes sunk deep into his face, and slowly reached out one skinny arm towards me, taking my hand tenderly, as one might pluck a delicate rose from a spring flowerbed. He lived life as a man's man, but in death he was so fragile and anonymous. more like a lost child. He stroked the back of my hand with one finger and gingerly pulled me closer. Already a few phrases were bubbling in the back of his skinny throat, but he lacked the strength to set them free. I leaned in further and caught what were to be his final words: "Son...keep it gangsta", he sighed. And with that, he was gone.

Hope that helps.

Petey

What are people thinking of "Freek A Leek"? I was a little disappointed. I think Petey deserves better than a tossed-off Lil Jon beat for his return.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it has a ew good tracks on it, especially Stick 'Em Up (Petey's own production!) and the Timbaland track Break Me Off featuring Missy Elliott. Also present: Lil' Jon, Mannie Fresh and Kanye West.

Spurious Disco Inferno comparison of the week #23: "Starbound: All Burnt Out & Nowhere To Go"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"get on dis motorcycle" is in fact a fantastic production. the ace in the hole is the children's chorus or whatever the heck that is looping around in the background. the combination of those plus the sitar and all the little chiming, tinkly bits (so much treble to this track) gives it this crazy forward-lurching momentum that the deliberately crappy drum taps help pin down a bit. the full-stops make it rip harder too, even though that's the oldest trick in tim's book.

love how everything but the sitar drops out for the first couple bars of bubba's verse.

.rob (rgeary), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

petey pab needs some respect.
remember the OLD SCHOOL HIT where he capitalized on 911 by singing:
"USA CMON AND RAISE UP, GET A FLAG
TWIST IT ROUND YOUR HEAD SPIN IT LIKE A HELICOPTER"

beautiful.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Get on Dis Motorcycle" really is a fantastic song, and the "Starbound" call is spot on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa for some reason i did think of D.I. when i first dl'ed this song but i failed to understand why. now i do. children choruses: only good when looped and fucked with? anyways, the fact that my own loose association was just corroborated is why i love ILM

jake in portland (cerybut), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The children's chorus in "rubber band man" is pretty hot too.

djdee2005, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah i was thinking today about how many great rap tracks this year have kids singing in them. But then I could only think of "Welcome Back" and, um, the first song on the Kanye West album.

"Rubberband Man" is prob my favourite hip hop track of the year.

"Freak-A-Leek" is the grossest song I've ever heard in my life.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 21 February 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

'jam y'all' is a much better lil jon production than 'freak-a-leek' imho.

'get on dis motorcycle' is great, but i think 'it's on' is still my favourite.

I was about to mention 'Vibrate'! It's terrific. Who is the uncredited female guest rapper? Cis and I were watching this video, and her verse is almost entirely blanked out - it is probably the greatest verse in hip hop history, I wanna hear it!

"Been gone from home so long some folks think that I died. Even if I don't get rich I'm thankful that I'm alive". PeteyPablo
That is how I think. I am from england. I was told my beats sound like a guy called Timbaland. I didn't want to believe that anyone could be as good as me. I checked him out. He was better than me!
I locked myself away from family, friends, girlfriend and buisness. I wanted to be as good if not better. Now I live in the middle of nowhere. I have learned the hard way about the engineering side of things. I am still a composer though.
Being alone is tough.
You lose inspiration, but for once you can see your own self clearly.
We are all just mere ants in the whole scheme of things.
It is lines like this line of yours that give you hope.
Also, it is lines like this that make me want to play you my beats.
One day we will collaborate. Why? Because one day I will need a proper rapper.
I hope you hear me and hope one day to meet you cause music is a way out.
Not from poverty, but from enprisonment of the mind.
And on that note if I make it to America (still trying to get a visa), where my whole family lives, I will track down your agent.
Until then, One love, peace and prosperity,
Gregory Fraser.
P.s. They say it takes genius to recognise genius. Well this maybe true, but you don't have to be a genius to see a proper beatmaker and take advantage. Especially when he is only known as a drum and bass Dj in England.

damn, 'still writing in my diary' is great -- sequenced really well -- he introduces the last four songs as like "these are songs about going thru shit" & they're totally heartfelt & melodic

"be country" is this one where he sort of croons -- it's great -- unfortunately it's not on youtube

"he spoke to me" is more throaty singing, obv a church vibe to it, it could easily pass for r kelly if there wasn't such a southern guy singing it

& petey's personality really shows thru on the rest of the album on the more crunk shit
