OK, TRIVIA QUIZ TIME!

(the following people are disqualified from the quiz because they helped out with the comp and will be getting their prize anyway: Ned Raggett, M. Matos, Michael Daddino, Dougo, Elvis T., Jen Nstop, Martin M., Nick N., Maura J.)

You must ANSWER ALL FOUR QUESTIONS CORRECTLY and post it here. If you succeed, I send you a free copy of this double disc comp!! So, uh, don't post partial answers unless you want to help your enemiesfellow ILMers.

#1 : Ian MacKaye is the lead singer on Fugazi's "Waiting Room". What other song on this compilation does he sing lead for?

#2 : Prince obviously wrote "Alphabet St.", but he also wrote one other song on this compilation for another artist/band. Which song is it?

#3 : AFX (aka Aphex Twin aka Richard D. James) released the "Men 1" single whose A-side was a remix of another song that happens to be on this compilation, although uncredited on the AFX single. Which song is it?

#4 : Marc Almond does "Tears Run Rings" on this compilation. His, then, ex-Soft Cell co-conspirator Dave Ball co-wrote another song on this compilation. Which song is it?

Go!

(remember, you must answer all four correctly.)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(and this goes to the first person that succeeds only... duh)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What other song on this compilation does he sing lead for?

Uh, the Beatles! No, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Daaaaaamn!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Pailhead, "Don't Stand in Line"
2) 3 O'Clock, "Neon Telephone"
3) 808 State, "Flow Coma"
4) Psychic TV, "Tune In (Turn On The Acid House"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Lousy Google and its inability to help me with that Prince one.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope I'm not disqualified for forgetting to close the parentheses.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this list brings back some damn good mix-tape memories. Sadly Ive lost many of said mixtapes thanks to horrible ex boyfriends.

I'd forgot all about Head of David for one thing. "Bugged" is a fricking great song.

Didnt realise how much of my personal canon was 1988 shit. It makes sense tho - final year high school.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 1988 could quite possibly be my least favourite year for music ever. Maybe this mix might change my mind though..

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Aieee, milo, not all four are correct, alas.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(and it's not because of the dangling paranthesis)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(btw, it's not as if the quiz is the only way to get this comp.. if you don't mind sending me a dual jewel case and maybe a little something to cover postage, this can also get you the 2CDR comp with packaging and all)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's more fun this way. I think I know which is wrong.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure. Email me your address and I'll get something to you.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

If you'd e-mail me the same, it would be appreciated.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 January 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Good formatting! They should make that sort of form standard for all CDR700 efforts.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 19 January 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Pailhead, "Don't Stand in Line"
2) 3 O'Clock, "Neon Telephone"
3) 808 State, "Flow Coma"
4) M.E.S.H.: "Meet Every Situation Head On"

Woah, do I feel like a leech now ;) I'm pretty sure about the last one (off the same compilation as milo's suggestion), but had no clue about the first three. Thus, milo should have the prize, having really beat me 3-1 :)

OleM (OleM), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have this comp, Donut Bitch. Who do you wish me to sacrifice to Cthulhu in order to earn a copy of this comp?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

OleM wins! Is that your real e-mail address, OleM?

(no worries about milo, he's being compensated too)

Custos: mail me a DUAL jewel case (as opposed to a doubly-thick case that can hold four cds) and maybe a little something to cover postage. You should still have my mailing address from the 1978 cdr trade.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this might be the greatest record ever made

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I still have your land address...but...
I don't even know where I can even purchase a dual jewel case. I've never seen them in the stores. Would a pair or normal single CDR blanks work instead?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to have this CD. Where do I send the CDs/cash?

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome, db :)))

no 3 Wize Men, though? :(

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I need your addy, too.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know where I can even purchase a dual jewel case. I've never seen them in the stores. Would a pair or normal single CDR blanks work instead?

Best place to find dual jewel cases.. go to some used CD store where there is a 99 cent section. There are probably tons of shitty bands in that section that released a double CD using that case. Throw away the liner notes, and keep the CDs as coasters as bonuses. (or "boni"?). It's often cheaper than going to a place that sells empty ones.

Jeff: skool me on 3 Wize Men.

Jim, Christoff: I'll be emailing you

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Custos: I'm not preparing cover art for two separate single cds, alas. You'll just have to find a dual jewel case. Hopefully the advice above will help.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch: Yep, that's a real address. Also: Yay! And thanks! And thanks to milo as well! ;)

OleM (OleM), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

3 Wize Men = brit rap group, sub sub Beastie Boys, made an LP for Rhythm King in '88, a bit naff actually, but they managed about two and half good tracks in their (brief) career. Obviously I was only half serious about the ":(" ... but omitting them AND Derek B was a bit too much. Yay parochialism! ;-)

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll just have to find a dual jewel case. Hopefully the advice above will help.
Well, I'll see what I can find.
While were talking about this...what would you like in return?
I have two projects I'm toying with (Details available in this thread). Do either of these tickle your fancy?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll cut to the chase. I don't have the resources to sniff for dual jewel cases. (I have a stash, but they will all be used for sure) If I don't have dual jewel cases, I can't make the comps. Sorry, Custos, but in this case, swaps aren't really what I'm looking for, albeit your projects sound interesting.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, wait, wait.
Thats not what I mean.
I already said I'm going to look for the dual cases myself and send them to you.
'kay?
But after you fill the dual case with music, that means after that I owe you two discs

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No you don't. CD-Rs are dime a dozen. don't worry about that.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't want to totally sidetrack this thread, but just for the time being, I'd feel more comfortable not receiving even more mp3 mixes from other folks. That attitude will change in the near future... but just for now, I'm more interested in dual cases for the job than getting mix cds. No offense meant to anyone.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

'kay.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet fucking jesus db.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My. God. I must have this, as proof that music actually was better my sophomore year of college if nothing else. If you don't want more mixes, can I trade you something non-musical? Like a jar of homemade preserved lemons?

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hah douglas, you should start an official ILE homemade produce swapping thread

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile, I've been meaning to ask, what IS that cover image?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Douglas: I'll happily take homemade preserves! Although I'm sure you wouldn't have to trade something that great. :) (i'll email you)

Ned: What do you think it is? That's the more important question.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I kid you. The above is a human brain after extreme doses of pulsating sounds that oversample James Brown, Kraftwerk, and Public Enemy (which was pretty much half of the music of 1988)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

..oh, and lots of 303.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff W: I picked up this weird stateside LP comp called "XII Inches Of Virgin (12 inches of version)", which was a comp of these one off dance tracks from Age Of Chance, Soho, Well Red (Pascal Gabriel, etc), Go, etc... all from '88, and there was T-Cut-F, which was a Derek Bailey side project. All of it was.. well.. meh, including the Derek B. :( At least it was just $2.

Had Two Men, A Drum Machine, And A Trumpet!! (which was basically Derek Bailey and the other two fellows from Fine Yong Cannibals/English Beat) and their track "Tired Of Getting Pushed Around" been 1988 , I would have used that in a second, but it was actually 1987 (though released stateside in '88). (You DID use that on your comp.. right? RIGHT?)

I'm mostly sad I wasn't able to get tracks from Social Distortion's "Prison Bound" and the Volcano Suns' "Farced", even though I tried hard. :(

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha:

201 01 Loop "Black Sun" (from Fade Out)
202 02 Royal Trux "Strawberry Soda" (from Royal Trux, the, um, first s/t one)
203 03 Enya "Orinoco Flow" (from Watermark)

i kiss you sooooooo much

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what's called "None of these bands will really get along with the others so let's just get them a halfway house somewhere along the track list road"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a Celebrity Real World before its time, sorta.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved the episode where Herrema peed on Enya's bed.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

but then they all did heroin and listened to kitaro, so it's win-win, baby.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm tempted to ask for a copy myself DB - would you ship one all the way over to Aus? I dunno how I'd cover the postage (unless I can work out how to buy US stamps ... or something...)

PS my working email is trace - at - connect DOT net DOT au not the one here.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, Jeff, you know I was talking about Derrick May in my rant to you above, not Derek B. Apologies, and I now feel TH-TOOPID. Derek B then! I Need 2 B Skooled.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha, "Derek Bailey".. that's what I get for posting at work when I have three other things on my mind)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

derek b was a crap uk rapper of the period db. the only thing i vaguely remember was some line like "two big things like basketballs" which i think referred to a chicks boobs as she fellated him (or maybe his own balls?)

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

did derick may really work with the guys from fyc?

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This thing is really stunning. My minorest of quibbles is the choice of Rod the Mod's "Forever Young" over "Lost In You," "My Heart Can't Tell You No" or especially "Crazy About Her" from the Out Of Order album.

I wannit I wannit I wannit

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I'm afraid to hear this, cuz it'd probably inspire extensive record purchasing. I really don't know if I wanna be seen hunting Bros albums online (and praise the almighty VH1 Classic for actually making me aware of Bros).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't know if I wanna be seen hunting Bros albums online (and praise the almighty VH1 Classic for actually making me aware of Bros).

Which is really hilarious because they did *not* make much of an impact at all, in fact they were almost the turning point where MTV stopped promoting high profile UK teenpop acts of any sort (after helping put Duran Duran into overdrive some years previously, in comparison).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

VH1 Classic plays some videos that were actually banned by MTV (the one where a Lou Reed robot rips his face off, Rolling Stones' "She Was Hot") or rejected (Talking Heads' "Blind"). They definitely play Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" before midnight.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda figured Bros must not have made much impact. I mean, I knew ALL about Breathe around the same time.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think about the only big act in that vein that they tried to promote pre-Nirvana and post-Bros was EMF...and then a couple of months later, that was that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "When Will I Be Famous?" got a slight nod from the tekno crowd recently thanks to Sascha Funke's cover of the song on one of his more popular Bpitch single releases, and we got Tiga covering Corey Hart. So in a way, all those synth pop idols from the mid to late 80s are getting some form of rediscovery (for better or worse or even worse yet, irony)... That said, "When Will I Be Famous?" is a great, great song.. the lyric interplay, the building in the bridge, and that one weird moment where the song turns into a waltz for half a bar.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Two Men, A Drum Machine, And A Trumpet!!! were just Andy Cox and David Steele (FYC, English Beat) officially, and for the song "Tired Of Being Pushed Around", they had Derrick May on the drum and synth programming. Thing is, that was pretty much they're only song under that alias anyway, so that's why i'm a bit liberal about calling it a collaboration amongst the three.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, "their" only song

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha! Found some!
I picked up a 10 pack of double capacity jewel cases.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Meanwhile, I'm surprised I haven't gotten shit for the ommission of a particular very popular rock band from this track listing...)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(hmmm, first time I've seen the Cocteau Twins referred to as a "rock band")

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh shit, my bad - they are in there. sorry. or rather: yay!)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got Guns'n'Roses, U2 and REM in there, those are the three monster rock bands from 1988 I can think of offhand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(okay, now I'm intrigued - is it Metallica?)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding!

"And Justice For All" was my first ever exposure to Metallica, specifically the "One" video on the local music video show on UHF in the LA/OC area at the time ("Request Video"). God, what an awfully fucking boring song, awfully fucking boring video, and an awfully sounding AND fucking boring album. I would have easily placed a Metallica song had I been given an early 80s year to compile, as I think that stuff is more fun, but I wasn't, alas.

The sad part is, for canonical reasons, I was willing to contribute a SHORT Metallica song from "And Justice For All" (if one even existed), but I searched for Metallica songs via iTunes and *SHOCK* *HORROR* *SURPRISE* none of their stuff was to be found. HOW VERY STRANGE. HMMMMMMMMMM!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

In retrospect, having to take out AC/DC's "Ruff Stuff", off the far more superior mega-rock album "Blow Up Your Video" was a more difficult moment during the weeding process.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
My brand new DVD-RW drive is burning fucking coasters now.. so those of you who are expecting copies of this comp are unfortunately going to have to wait a bit so i can replace my drive sometime next week.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ this is fine. Either Brian's a genius compiler or 1988 = best year evah. Or most likely both.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My brand new DVD-RW drive is burning fucking coasters now.. so those of you who are expecting copies of this comp are unfortunately going to have to wait a bit so i can replace my drive sometime next week.
Ouch. Now i'm even more bummed out.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I called Fry's this morning, expecting to get my Plextor DVD burner, and they don't carry them! No store in Washington state carries what's known as the best DVD drive on the planet! And the service guy at Fry's told me this!

So I'm ordering it online.

So, my backup drive just ate it a few days ago. So I have NO way to burn any discs until I get this Plextor drive... probably next week.

So, basically, more delays in getting discs out to you all. Again, it's been really shitty luck. Sorry about that.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 14 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

A man of his word -- and a great example of the potential of the format. I've listened to it 4 times and i'm still on the first disc!
