Spymob

don't think there's been much discussion of them beyond their work with N.E.R.D...dunno how much people will even give a shit since the Neptunes didn't produce their record, and anyway for all their clout, Neptunes-affiliated artists seem to have shitty label luck (Kenna's 2-year delay and label switch, the Clipse having an album shelved before Lord Willin', Kelis' 2nd album having a U.K.-only release, etc.), so I wouldn't get my hopes up for their album being released anytime soon.

of the handful of songs I've heard, "It Gets Me Going", which supposedly will be their single, is pretty great, and their song on the Clones comp., "Half Steering", is the weakest. but it's promising stuff.

It's funny...this band is from my hometown of Mpls, and were collaborating with basically the biggest producers in the universe, and they still had a really low profile in the city...you never really heard anything about them...it was wierd...esp. for a city that (as most people who have read my posts know) luuuuuvs to champion it's little hometown heroes....

So, basically, that CD never came out? And now did that other thread say that the Neptunes weren't using them for the next NERD record? Is it a falling out?

My friends in Mpls have said both that they don't play shows very often, but that they're great and the stuff on Clones/N.E.R.D. is pretty non-representative.

Maybe that's the deal...I certainly don't remember seeing their name around that much, but it could be a thing of me being in my own little wierd indie rock universe and not looking for them.

as far as I know there's no falling out..like it was a mutual decision for the Neptunes not to produce the Spymob album, and I think it was a good thing - I like their slick alt-rock sound, trying to filter it through Pharrell's bag of tricks would be a mistake I think. and as for the label stuff, Star Trak is just a corporate subsidiary, I'm sure it's just usual major label release date shuffling politics, nothing personal.

based on N.E.R.D., i definitely expected some kind of tough funk-rock thing, but that's not the case at all.

The album is for sale at their website, where you can also download a couple of tracks. I've got it, I found it a bit disappointing. Some killer songs though, like It Get's Me Going en 2040.

one month passes...
looks like it's official: the Spymob is finally dropping, on April 6th, but instead of Star Trak, it's on...Ruthless Records?!?

oh well, at least it's finally coming out. a friend of mine came across a Star Trak promo copy from last summer and mailed it to me a few weeks ago, it's pretty good. it does kind of taper off after the first few songs, but a lot of the rest has serious growning potential. the only difference between my promo and the tracklisting linked above is that mine has 12 tracks, the last one, "Joe Namath" is evidently not on the official release. weird.
