First one to say "I'd hit it" fucking DIES.

2 Pretty 4 Porn (DarrenK), Thursday, 22 January 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Inspired.

Have you listened to the mp3s? Finer pop I haven't heard in quite a while.

Isn't "Smoosh" the name of the Oasis parody band on that Mr. Show episode?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a joke I don't get?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a joke. But you still don't get it.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

She Like Electric is one of my favorite albums of last year... Just when you finally have a band that can actually legitimately get away with being "cute and girly", they sound far more musically mature than most bands I've heard last year. The first few songs remind me a little bit of Essential Logic, with the vocals being different of course.

And "Rad" is rad.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking awesome. like half a year after I emailed everyone I knew saying "smoosh are so great" they're on the cover of Plan B and stuff. their songs are catchy beyond belief. they need to be No 1 all over the world.

I will just point out now that one of them was BORN IN 1994.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "Massive Cure."

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes "Massive Cure" is great! the one which always gets stuck in my head is "It's Not Your Day To Shine" though.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

DC OTM. It's a little diabolical how together their whole thing is. Also, when they played a Pattern 25 anniversary show a few weeks ago, the place was packed. At least half the crowd left when they were done.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I first saw them at the Capitol Hill Block Party this past summer in Seattle.. but i first HEARD them via a very strange encore when Cat Power played a free show in the lower east side Manhattan just weeks earlier when I was visiting NYC.. it was something hstencil invited me to. Chan did her normal thing, and then she got up and start gettin' all FONKEE and was karaoking to some song, and I was "WTF?".. later on, I'd found out that "Rad" by Smoosh was the song Chan was karaoking to.

Yeah, although apparently Bob and David had Radiohead in mind when they did it.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no...

See, I've finally heard Smoosh and of course I think they're the greatest thing ever. But I *would*.

I am glad that the RCKRGRL Summer Rock Camp has produced something some bubbley and fanastic. They are like the personification of Daisy Guitars. Even though they have no guitars.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Cold is pretty catchy. They're a lot more lovable than the Smoosh on Mr. Show.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
They played RCKRGRL Summer Rock Camp but never attended. They were performing guests.

three years pass...

new album out toward the end of next month; you can hear a bunch of clips from it here.

seems like they've made a conscious move away from the cute bubblegumminess of their earlier stuff, which would be disappointing if they didn't have such a knack for airy piano ballads like this one:

also, dope drum fills:

(clip is a couple years old, but w/e)

not having a luxury watch is terrible (unregistered), Thursday, 6 May 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

thread reminded me i saw them do a live instore a few years ago. they reminded me of mates of state. i find the first album a bit unbearable though tbh

hell and the handbaskets (electricsound), Thursday, 6 May 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, their debut is patchy as hell, but I'll gladly defend "Rad" to the death. they worked best as a novelty act at that point, and the serious, singer-songwritery songs on that album are way weaker than the ones on Free to Stay.

two months pass...

the new album is streamable on their website now. shame about the title and artwork.

it's pretty much all ethereal, mid-tempo, soulsearching stuff, which I happen to be in the mood for at the moment. there are some brilliant touches in the arrangements, like the interlocking drum machine/drum kit lines in "The World's Not Bad", the dinky melodica that transitions seamlessly into a trumpet solo at the end of "In The Fall", and all of "Call of the Mid Afternoon". memorable melodies are still somewhat lacking & a couple songs are too earnest and stately for my liking, but they've improved tremendously in terms of texture and song structure since they abandoned the "live in studio" approach of their first two albums.

[/corny indie fukk]

only about 15 people are likely to ever hear this, obv.

best feelgood indie singalong closing track since OTC's "Hilltop Procession"? I like the section from about 2:30 onward where the kick drum cuts out completely, then starts playing 3 beats intermittently, then comes back in full force during that extended coda.
