...I've decided. What I can't work out is how a bunch of pudgy dweebs wearing the wrong clothes, with the wrong hairstyles and living 10,000 miles away from New York and the King's Road managed it.

By having no restrictions or precursers.

besides, in 1976 that's how all the punks were. Check the pics in Sniffin glue...

punk? album? there's a problem here. the only good punk albums are compilations of punk singles

pah, the best punk album ever made is machine gun by brotzmann! and done with no guitars!

Phoebe Dinsmore, Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was being ironic with the "dweebs" part of my post.

Bollocks, to lapse into punk terminology.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 January 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, i like the punk + horn sections of the 2nd and 3rd albums too, though i guess "stranded" does have that nice airplane speed noise thing to it, but that 2cd compilation, i'll take it all (oh, would program out five ?)

guitars and horn sections, a compromise ?

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Machine Gun has PLENTY OF BOLLOCKS and has NOBLE AIM so don't try it.

Maybe I should have said that "(I'm) Stranded" by The Saints is the greatest punk rock album ever, that is punk rock as in the high-energy guitar based rock music produced specifically in the period 1976-79"... except it wouldn't have fitted in the wee box - as indeed the Saints didn't... in a strange way... in their wee box... fit, I mean...

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 January 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

better than Stiff Little Finger's Inflammable Material? Tossup I say and I like Eternally Yours more anyways.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd meet you a quarter of the way there and say that "(I'm) Stranded" by the Saints is the greatest punk rock SINGLE ever, but I can't go whole hog on the album.

Greatest Punk Rock album ever? Shit, that's tough. My personal pick would be It's Alive by the Ramones, but y'know....that's a live album, ain't it. Inflammable Material is another fine choice. I'd cite the first Generation X album as a contender as well. Fuck, I don't know.

Static Age is another contender.

I stand by the US version of the first Clash album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Another fine choice (and making the point of the US version is an important distinction!)

I say 'Damaged'. ('I'm Stranded' has too much breadth and depth and heart to be truly effective for me)

"Damned Damned Damned!" Or anything at all on Sire Records (North America) from 1976-78

Scott (who coincidentally just purchased "Machine Gun" but hasn't played it ye, Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the best punk album of all time is The Image has cracked by Alternative TV.
