What's your personal musical 'kiss of death'?

Inspired by Spiritualized seminar no. infinity yonder - I scanned the phrase "Perhaps it's a grower".

"Perhaps it's a grower".

The perfect phrase encapsulating the most-likely-by-overwhelming-margin scenario - the poster (I think Bill) will listen to this CD exactly three more times, then either withold comment and line up their next heroes very cautiously in order not to be seen to have had one's equilibrium destroyed (placing the CD in second-tier-of-prominence visually but mentally noted as the 'never play but remember to dust regularly' pile), or deliver a Stalinist-trial style self-denunciation, making a scorched-earth advance as one wanders into any territory where the physical laws of the entropic universe you are leaving are inverted, or at least refracted sufficiently to alter its creator. "Perhaps it's a grower" = "The situation re my coolness (or confidence in one's own taste and thus one's self-perception or whatever) in continuing to like this band is not necessarily to my advantage". Y'now. I know this because that was my initial reaction upon buying Primal Scream's 'Exterminator'. (Actually, that was the SECOND worst initial reaction. The worst was to 'Celebrity Skin'. [Hey Jerry - that was me who asked you that question 'Is CS the worst album ever made in the history of music' at Borders!] I think it was "CAN...WE...GET...THIS...OFF! UUUUUURRRRGGGHHH! (makes bored whines that would have shamed me at age seven)", then I sat there afterward shaking as if emerging from a South American interrogation for a few minutes, smoking 3 cigarettes in 2 minutes. But I don't denounce Hole at every opportunity, preferring to keep quiet, whereas I feel the need to denounce Primal Scream at every opportunity however irrelevent (like now), overcompensating for a fea of being perceived to backslide.) Anyway, that's the phrase tha does it for me.

So what's yours?

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus Christ! That was you! I know what you look like now, Mr Q.

Others - "This makes one look at their back catalogue in a whole new light" (REM, 'AFTP'), "Ummm, those are some cool guitar tones. Actually they're not really. They're different though. I respect bands that change their style all the time. Maybe. Oh, hold on, maybe it was the producer's idea. Oh fuck, I dunno" (MSP, 'Everything Must Go)

well, some people might like it.

'soulful'

White British boys with guitars never ever ever deserve such a description - Oh, OK... I may -through gritted teeth- admit to a few exceptions note 1 but none of them will be anything like Elbow, Starsailor, Muse, Witness etc.

note 1: Timebox, SAHB, Associates...

I did indeed use the phrase 'perhaps it's a grower', didn't I? I think that expresses hope that it might be? I want it to be. Some albums do take a while (though maybe that does mean they're...crap, maybe there should be some kind of instant reaction?) Somewhere below I started a thread about really liking crap music which might be somehow related, except that was possibly to just gauge the reaction of others.
But, yeah, if something really is crap, I think I'd usually just describe it as such, (or not say anything as someone who really liked it played it to me...)

I won't buy anything that's described as "essential" or "creating their own genre, enter their world"

Group Descriptions:

"Reunion." "Supergroup." (Then again, I haven't seen this one used for a long while.) "Will to Power." (I'm sure you all remember 1987, The Year Of Oh My Lord, They're Playing That Horrible Song By That Sleazy Looking Couple Again. Please Ram A Meat Skewer Through My Ears And End This Torture.)

Statements Made In Interviews:

"Did you ever notice that God turned backwards is Dog? I think that's so...deep." (I have only seen one person anywhere use this and not sound like an idiot--Steve Gerber, in Man-Thing. And he was using it as an anticlimax.) "I think human beings are put on this earth to learn." (Another indicator of a room-temperature IQ.) "I have a book of poetry coming out soon." (Unless the musician is Richard Hell, Tom Verlane, Patti Smith, or Lenny Kaye, of course.)

"Such and such artists came together with Bono to benefit . . ." is a good sign the ensuing song will be crap.

A description of 'life-affirming' in the NME, as mentioned by DG somewhere else, I believe.

what does tarden look like, DG?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For the record, I loved and continue to love "Celebrity Skin", although the fact that Billy Corgan is involved with it has me a bit squeamish.

nineteen years pass...

i don't like bands (or "solo projects") where some typographical peculiarity is an intrinsic part of the name. for e.g. leaving out all the vowels or replacing the letter e with a 3 or u with v or some shit, sorry pal i am not gonna listen to your stuff except by accident
