I'm almost 30 (or I was 30 not too long ago)

So, what are/were you listening to at the crossroads age? Me, I'm almost 30 and am listening to the following: Leatherface, New Pornographers, Wilco, Creeper Lagoon, Beta Band, Butthole Surfers (still), Lucksmiths, Captain Beefheart (still), Sea & Cake, Old 97s, Monkees, Le Shok, Problematics, Retreads, Reatards, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Residents (sometimes, somewhat), '66 almost-unknown-psychedili-punks, Camper Van Beethoven (still), Ramones (still), Screeching Weasel (occasionally, but still)... and I kinda dig those scammers known as the Donnas for reasons not entirely known to myself. I like a lot more than this, but this is what came to mind just now. So, for your answers, just speak from recollection. No need to walk over to your CD rack and pick the coolest things. I guarantee I left out some cool shit that would sound impressive to a rock geek. I just wanna hear what comes to mind when someone asks, "What ya listenin' to lately?"

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I'd like to die now and go onto another plane of existence. Thank you.

Nude Spock, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well a bizarre thing that I'vve noticed bout myself is that I'm looking back to stuff I was listening a decade ago (not nostalgic , just curious) .a good amount of record seem to have lost "that magic feeling". anyway the records I'm listening more in the last weeks are bjork " vespertine" , taku sugimoto "opposite", oval, robert wyatt, giacinto scelsi , fennezs, herbert ....

francesco, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*walking back from my CD rack where I picked the coolest things...* Haha! No, but seriously, here's what I'm listening to these days:
The Dears - "C'Etait Pour La Passion"
The Strokes - Is This It?
The Alley Cats - "Puddin'n'Tain"
Wilson Pickett - "Mustang Sally"
Tricky - "Black Steel"
Mink Deville - "Spanish Stroll"
The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
M - "Nostalgic du Cool"
The 6ths - "Aging Spinsters"
Pulp - "Babies"
Etienne Daho - "Epaule Tattoo"
Roxy Music - "2 H.B."
Supergrass - "Pumpin on your Stereo"
Katerine - "Je Vous Emmerde"
"The moods and the styles so frequently change/From 21 to 25/From 25 to 29..." - that's what comes to mind everytime someone brings such a question up. It's true, however I really feel I never turned my back on anything I've listened to. I find suspect people who undergo considerable and radical alterations in their tastes instead of an evolution. (ie. selling all your Dead Can Dance records because you're into Public Enemy now). I'm uncomfortable with personality changes based on opposition instead of evolution, basically. Do you feel some kind of natural progression in your music tastes? Or have you made brutal U-turns? (SAY NO TO GRUNGE! BURN GALLAGHERS BURN! PARKLIFE MY ARSE! 808 OR NOTHING!) Most of what I listened to 5-10 yrs ago I still like, however there are some records I've listened to so many time that I just don't ever feel the need to hear again, even though I love them just as much as I did before. "Transformer". Anything by the VU. Cure records. I know them by heart. I dont need to actually listen to them.

Simon, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, exactly, Simon. I say that I "like" something because I did/do/don't need to hear it anymore. But, with some things I used to like, I find now that I'll put 'em on and go, "huuuuhhhh, do I likethis? Years will go by and finally, I'll just decide I'm never going to listen to the particular CD again, so I'll sell it or trade it in. Then, sometimes, I wish I had certain CDs I sold. Then, when I repurchase the CDs, I go, "Huh? I liked this?!" It's a cycle of some sort. And, it makes me sound stupid. People always tell me "don't sell CDs! You'll miss them!" and sometimes they're right, but I've traded in close to a hundred in this last year and I can't even remember most of them. :-)

But, yeah, it's evolution. Like, I still like the Ramones, but I usually only put 'em on if I'm crocked... or I'll put 'em on a mix tape for someone who knows nothing about punk. I still like the Stooges and Kiss and Black Sabbath but never listen to 'em. Same thing with most shit. I have to admit, if I put Celtic Frost on or Coroner or Voivod, I'm listening to the whole thing. They retain their interestingness no matter how many listens you give 'em.

Incidentally, I was at a party last night where the main attraction was drunkenly watching "Rock'n'Roll Highschool" ("dont stop it until all the flames have faded to black" said a girl at the end).

Andrew Eldritch once wisely noted that some records he doesn't need to listen to anymore because all he has to do is look at the spine and it conjures everything up. Which I have a deep sympathy for.

Currently I've been listening to Celesteville, the Gang Wizard and Minmae. Precisely.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

About to approach 30 myself, I'm finding myself listening to stuff I haven't pulled out in 10 years.. namely Hypnolovewheel, Ungle Wiggly, Dogbowl, the Tinklers and a variety of Shimmy Disc related goodness.

Otherwise, a lot of downtempo and "glitch". The new Mr. Dan ep is really great... esp. if you like Ladytron, Stereolab, Turn On, etc.

That's exactly it. Andrew knows me so well.

By the way, I'm disturbed by the fact that I havent heard of, let alone heard, almost any of the bands mentioned in this thread. Oh no! I'm losing touch of the Freaky Trigger mainstream!

Simon, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm slightly past the thirty mark... these days it's Deep Purple's Machinehead... that's about it, really.

Wow, I really dig/dug your taste that year, Mark. Excellent list!

I was 30 ages ago, I dunno exactly what I was listening to. General area of things tho - garage rock, '70s metal, rap, free jazz. I'm 38, I still like all the same stuff - Tahu FM (Maori-oriented radio station that plays lots of hip-hop & r'n'b) is my favourite (= only) source of "new" music at the moment.

I bought VCN as a Japanese import in May of 2000...was that released anywhere in 1999?

Mark, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hamell on Trial Go-Betweens (still) Pretenders (still) Yo La Tengo My Dad is Dead

Nothing new, really.

Dave225, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hammell on Trial -- classic. Ed Hammell broke his back last year in a car wreck but keeps on ticking. . .

The original release of the whole album (not the EP, though that came out in '99 too) came out in '99 as part of a box set. It was really expensive, and I'm not sure you can even get it anymore. Released on WEA Japan (WPC-10044~10045), which is probably where you (and I) got the single album version as well.

Here's a good site for Boredoms discography: http://www1.neweb.ne.jp/wa/mambow/boredoms.htm

It's in English, a major plus!

An interesting question for me - I'm 18 months away. The current trends in my listening seem to be less and less interest in music that tries to be 'big' or 'important': several of the records I adored a few years ago seem crass now. I think I'll still like pop and still have a soft spot for lyrical indie-jangle too. But I can see more and more of my time being taken up with hip-hop, and I can also see a re-engagement with avant-garde and experimental music. Also, I've suddenly started buying CDs of African music and I suspect that'll happen more often too.
