Who the fuck are these guys? ...like Big Black meets Bob Log meets Andrew W.K. fucking awesome!

OCP (OCP), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it's simply.. JAPANTHER. ok?

mc (mcutt), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

they are terrible...simply.

ddb, Monday, 26 January 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb otm

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ive played with them a few times, good guys and one of the best live acts around. pure punk rock energy. also, "dump the body in rikki lake" is one of my favorite albums of last year.

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i think hit and miss live.
all the right heart in all the right places though. especially the tune about kids of single parents.

ddd, Monday, 26 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it's simply.. JAPANTHER. ok?

It's simply.... whatever, dickhead.

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i've spent a lot of time lately confusing japanther, japanese karaoke experiment, and ... no, maybe it's just those two.

jack cole? (to thread!)

jm to thread.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

am i being outed for liking Japanther's last album, Dump The Body In Rikki Lake? ;)

well, i can't deny it -- i like the mix of noise, rock and pop they serve up on it and i don't care what everyone says in the Shire.

i would be interested in what ddb or the borrible dislike about japanther though.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

crappy hipster shit! sucks!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

your comment would be useful if "crappy hipster shit" meant anything.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

your comment would be useful if "crappy hipster shit" meant anything.

but... it... DOES!

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

no. its is a useless phrase that doesnt describe why one dislikes the music at all -- it's a reaction to a perceived social intent or status of the band. "hipster" implies making the music just to be cool -- implying an intent. Why are hipsters? I could provide reasons why they could be perceived (or are) like Japanther moving to Williamsburg, etc -- but even then, that says nothing about the music. If anything, calling someone or a band out as a hipster or whatever says more about the person point the finger than what the finger is being pointed at.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

HI EVERYONE! WHAT DID I MISS??

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure some people dislike them because they have Vice Magazine associations...
I haven't heard Japanther yet, but I like all the other stuff vuice has been involved with/championed (Streets, Andrew WK, and A.R.E. Weapons, in particular).
Would they be at home grouped with those other bands? If so, I am curious...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Panthers (who were paired up against Japanther in the particular issue of Vice) are much better live/on-record but don't have the buzz that Japanther is getting. I may be speaking regionally here, but through my ears, a band like Japanther is a dime a dozen (cf, Hair Police, Coachwhips et al), a glut.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny thing, promotional backlash -- Vice Readership is the demo they play for; Vice Readership is the demo they get.

http://tapesrecords.com/

Leather Wings is the expanded South Of Northport EP, which includes Pleased To Meet You, which I swear by as trashy pop confection. Haven't been able to get Rikki Lake yet.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't heard their music but I have to say the story about the fight in Miami doesn't endear them to me.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the link Mod.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post to the borrible -- have you seen japanther live? i suppose if i, it might change my reaction to them -- though i suppose, personally, it's a hard stretch just on record for me to compare them to the Coachwhips (for the obvious (for me) reason of John Dwyer and his schtick) or the Hair Police (who i think are a terrible band). then again, i like their last album for the lo-fi noisy pop and beats, etc.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have. They're better now that tey can get their gear up without it falling apart.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

so, if you havent heard the music, h, then . . . ?

i mean, sure, it sucks on a personal level dealing with them if they are assholes, etc (and i know the story you speak of) -- but plenty of assholes have made great music.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but there's a difference between just being a normal jerky asshole type and a completely unreasonable total asshole who starts fights with people. And why should I support or be into someone who does that? So what if their music may be good, I'd rather not be involved, even with something as simple as hearing their music.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

also, even before the fight thing, people whose opinions I respect told me they were terrible. jack you're the only friend of mine whose opinions/tastes I know to be pretty much awesome who says they're any good.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the "fight in Miami" story?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

like i said before, i've never seen them live -- so that might change my attitude. then again im not involved in any scene politics either, so i dont have that to shape my opinion either.

still, if i were to stop listening to things because they were made by violent or poor behaving people, there's goes a giant chuck of things i enjoy like Skip Spence, the Electric Eels, the Stooges, Skip James, etc.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but the difference is most people I know would agree that Skip Spence, the Electric Eels, the Stooges, and Skip James all made great music, as opposed to Japanther who most agree (with jack as the exception) are garbage. That's even from some friends of mine who are friends with them!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

they're friends of mine - one of the most UN-hipster bands ever - they're just some cool ass dudes who like to skate and occasionally fight. And their records rule almost as much as the live show. I heard they added a girl recently, which makes me suspicious, but last time i hung out with 'em we had a killer time. Tovah and I put out a great CDR of theirs on our label, that sounds very different - more Wolfize spooky murk than hi-NRG slam. as always, www.geocities.com/berriesaswell. glad to help

roger adultery, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw them once when i was very, very drunk. it was the only time i've ever seriously heckled a band. i kept screaming things like, "be more confrontational!", "let's see some more confrontation!", and "that could have been way more antagonistic!". charming, i know, but i couldn't help it! finally ian stopped rolling around on the floor and yelping long enough to look over at me and say, "we believe in nonviolence."

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You a Pratt Brat Rog?

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

first time i saw them they looked like they wanted to rip everyone in the crowd's faces off

second third and forth time they wanted to hug everybody and praised their mothers

always seemed like good guys

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck you jack cole!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

bands that focus more on how they act on stage and their clothes then how they actually sound = crappy hipster shit!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

??? their clothes??? every time i've seen them, playing or just out and about, they've been wearing jeans and tshirts. maybe a sweater. call them out for sucking, but not for being some sort of fashion goon squad.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Just playing devil's advocate here, since I really know NOTHING about the band -- so this may be meant as a joke -- but this is from their own website:

"Design and style have always been a big part of Japanther. We had a logo before we had songs. Make your own Japanther shirt…or send Matt some $ and he'll mail you one. Remember: "fashion is state of mind, fuck Williamsburg.""

And what's the Miami fight story?

And weren't Black Dice, in their early days, known to be very confrontational and even violent during their shows?

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

quick story:
once when japanther was in milwaukee i played a shitty hardcore show with them. it blew. later that night they showed up at a basement and played again, for fun & for the people who missed them at the first show. seemed like a pretty nice gesture. ok im done.

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And weren't Black Dice, in their early days, known to be very confrontational and even violent during their shows?

Loud feedback, violent audiences, getting into fights. Yes.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

off topic sort of == arent bands allowed to have a learning curve anymore or are they supposed to hatched fully formed? early black dice is ok at best, but they developed into something nice, for example.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha no i'm as far from a Pratt Brat as it gets. I met those guys a few years ago when they opened for Wolf Eyes. We hit it off right away. In direct contrast to another band that has been mentioned here, they were just nice, unpretentious dudes. Perhaps it made me appreciate their music more.

Ian's brother runs a pretty great label too but I forget the name - anyway the did The Whip 7" and some other cool shit.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, you're wrong about the other band mentioned here. they are sweet, sweet people.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, speaking of the whip; since the drummer died, are the other dudes going to continue on/do something else? absolutely horrible if that was the last we heard from them.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

last i saw of joe he was Thrones again -- supposedly Neurot was supposed to be putting out a new Thrones, but I guess with Thin THe Herd dead it might not happen.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Seeing Thrones was so painful; not in that they were bad, but just that Joe looked like such a wretched, miserable, sad man.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, joe's not wretched at all. before he plays at shows he usually looks pretty happy. its just when hes playing, i guess -- when he gets all serious

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Preston = genius.

This thread is hilarious. Comedy gold.

The irony of someone ranting about how we all shouldn't hate on some band, on a site devoted to MUSIC CRITICISM, is priceless. (YOU THINK THIS BAND SUCKS? WELL, YOU SUCK!)

Why don't you tell me that I'm a douchebag for hating brussel sprouts, while you're at it?

It's not our fault that your friend's band sucks. We tried, we really did. It's just simply true.

I've gotta re-listen to *Dump The Body* right now...

Nancy Boy (Nancy Boy), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Here's the thing: their records are kinda crappy and as a concept the whole thing seems hopeless, but then like last winter I saw them playing at some gallery party and soon enough I was completely taken. They came off like meek 16-year-old Midwestern skater kids who’d spent about ten seconds putting together a drum machine beat because they were just too damn eager to rock with it to spend the extra five it would take to program a fill. Kind of a lunkhead-kid Make a Joyful Noise kind of thing. Which is entirely not up my alley, and yet for about thirty minutes there I was completely into it.

Later I listened to one of their records and yeah, it wasn’t nearly the same. But yeah, I’m as baffled as our anarcho-feminist friend by the “electro” thing up there: to my ears they wound up sounding more like … well, at their best, like some kind of Stereo Total type rudimentary-garagified version of hardcore (or really more screamo) band (i.e. “chanson : Stereo Total :: Black Flag : Japanther”??) “This is our anthem about positive action and living life to it’s fullest, yeah!” And then they sound like they’re just this short of an Op Ivy cover.

Anyway I wish they could make recordings that Don't Suck quite as much as that show I saw Didn't Suck.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I think the thread-opening question got the thing down, though I'd still tweak it a bit: at best they're like an Andrew W.K. version of Black Flag, yes.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago)

On stage, anyway.

Nancy Boy (Nancy Boy), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Yes. On record they're more like, I dunno, very stupid anteaters who can't make good records.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

x-post

Looking back on this thread, 'trina' was a pretty angry anarchofeminist ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

cdwill, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago)

wow, i just came across this completely useless board.

Look, I was in the fight that happened in Miami nearly a year ago (scroll to the beginning). I've played with them twice and they totally don't impress me. The second time we played with them, the Miami show, we tried to chat it up with them prior to (asking them how they liked my town, recommending places to visit, etc) and they were non-responsive and blatantly uninterested. Therefore, if the mic sitting on the stage starts to feedback suddenly, I'm not gonna really do anything about it (which started all the aggression from them). I kicked the bassist's ass with EASE that night. That's my experience.

Yet, there must be something more important to talk about than what a bunch of lame art fags they are or how they're super cool kids that remind you of your very own high school DIY aesthetic!

If this is such a conundrum, you should just either go out to their show and see for yourself or stay home and get drunk...it's entirely up to you, really.

But this nearly year-long post really did have me laughing for quite a while....

R, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I've seen that bassist: bragging about kicking his ass is like just two steps above bragging about kicking my ass.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

'Dude, I've seen that bassist: bragging about kicking his ass is like just two steps above bragging about kicking my ass.'

May-be, man...Just stating the facts. No bravado involved.

There is a reason for the areola being a different color to the rest of the breast. The areola is roughly where the ducts of the mammary glands are. Careful inspection of a mature human nipple will reveal 15-20 small openings arranged radially around the tip of the nipple (lactiferous ducts) from where milk is released during lactation. Other small openings in the areola are sebaceous glands which may provide a little oily lubrication during lactation, otherwise known as Montgomery's glands (or glands of Montgomery).

"I heard they added a girl recently, which makes me suspicious, but last time i hung out with 'em we had a killer time"

At least the misogyny is blatant, I guess.
In any event, I love Japanther. I don't know how people started referencing their clothes, though, because I don't think they dress that stylishly and that is a PROBLEM. Okay? No one should be proud of dressing poorly, you guys. Don't applaud people for looking bad... it just isn't very proactive. People in America dress hideously enough without being encouraged.

Sorry to fag out. Hey! Also, if you like Japanther you should check out this band called the DeathSet. I heard about them on SUCKAPANTS and they give me a Japanther feeling that I LOVE. You might dislike their music but at least they aren't miserable, hostile jerks.

Saint Patrik (cobaininacoma), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

japanther abandoned sukapants after a fight in the middle of nowhere, NM on tour once. i think they somehow remained friends after this.

then they cancelled the show my space had them booked on in chicago at the end of a west coast tour because, quote: "chicago has too many hipsters."

liked leatherwings but never heard rikki lake. never got to see them live, either.

it should be mentioned that they opened for ODB once, too. that fact alone makes me smile so huge whenever i think about it.

the japanther/ODB show was a Vice party at Plaid, a terribly annoying NYC venue (used to be Spa). That made it all the more interesting. But yeah, I didn't have a terribly good time. Most people were curious about ODB as he was just on parole or something and nobody thought he'd show.

ian, Friday, 21 November 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

Sure! Their new album is fun too. I honestly don't understand the hatred of Japanther on this board. It's the same noizo-distorto stuff you guys like in Lightning Bolt or whatever, but made poppy for 16-year-old kids who aren't old enough to get Forcefield.

I've encountered Whiney on numerous message boards and (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 21 November 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

I love these guys. I had a friend set up a show for them and at the end he was really nervous because some shit got messed up and all he had to give them was 50 dollars and when he did they were like "Awesome! That's totally enough to get to the next town!" And he saw them recently, which is like 6 years after the fact and they specifically remembered him.

I still do not understand how boring shit like No Age and Abe Vigoda get popular while these guys exist.
