>Didn't The Stone Roses, with the exception of the fantastic Fools >Gold, sound like a sixth-form Primal Scream (circa Sonic Flower >Groove) tribute band?

I recently realised I like ian brown's solo ones. I do not and have never liked the stone roses.
I own none of his albums but I am considering 'Golden Greats' now because 'So Many Soldiers' sounds really good to me. and so do the other couple of tracks I've downloaded.
I like the 'F.E.A.R.' one, too.

oh, and search 'corpses in her mouth', which is not on Golden Greats, and i don't know where it's from, but it's amazing. if only all chill-out music sounded like this.

robin, i sincerely hope this is a joke. i heard his first two albums, and they are chock-full of rubbish, but he is a really good singles artist. "corpses", "my star", "dolphins were monkeys", "FEAR" : not bad at all. he's better than john squire solo, but then, who isn't?

12. The World Is Yours (Reprise)
Ian Brown releases his new album 'The World Is Yours' on 24th September. His fifth solo record, this is a record he intended would "bury everything else I’ve ever done", and it’s hard to argue with the man. It’s an inspired creation – musically it’s awesome, lyrically it is personal, compassionate and defiant.
First single 'Illegal Attacks', released September 17th, is a tour de force. An in-your-face pop song like you’ve never heard before. Sinéad O'Connor and Brown duet, one of O’Connor’s two appearances on the record. It is a heady, powerful duet with stabbing double-bass and harp, sung with the kind of conviction that makes the hairs on your neck stand up.
Brown collaborated with two sets of producers – Black Ops and Emile - and recorded the album at various studios in London with Brown travelling to Windmill Lane studios in Ireland to record 'Illegal Attacks' and 'Some Folks Are Hollow' with O’Connor. Andy Rourke Ex-Smiths and Ex-Happy Mondays/Big Arm’ Paul Ryder contribute on bass. Steve Jones Ex-Sex Pistols appears on guitar on two tracks ('Sister Rose' and 'Me and You Forever') and Paul Cook (also Ex-Sex Pistols) appears on drums on the same tracks 'Sister Rose' and 'Me And You Forever' . The stunning string arrangements are the work of one Simon Hale.
'On Track', previously appeared as an instrumental on the soundtrack to Russian film Paragraph 78, but here takes on full song-form.
With a huge UK tour kicking off at the end of September, Ian Brown is back to entertain and inspire. The World is Yours is honest, direct, tender in parts and full of hope, acknowledging the fragile nature of the world, it makes you feel lucky to be alive.

I am wondering whether to go to a concert.
― PJ Miller, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago)
I love the man dearly but he is dreadful live, no? I'd probably go if I could though, but there's that whole ocean I'd have to cross.

The World is Yours is honest, direct, tender in parts and full of hope, acknowledging the fragile nature of the world, and features a tune on track 5.
Fixed.

insipid album/song-titles a dead giveaway. plz 2 join richard ashcroft in used-bin hell.
― Just got offed, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago)
He's horribly out-of-tune live. I mean HORRIBLY. And ever since I saw him kick the head in of some bouncer who tried to protect him at the infamous SF show, well, he just hasn't been the same for me.
― Richard Wood Johnson, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)
Were you actually at the show? I remember reading a review of that particular show a few years back and I thought it had to have been ghost-written by John Squire. Just a complete fiasco (the show, not the article).
― musically, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:31 (seventeen years ago)
I was there, yes. It was truly one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

What is it about San Francisco that brings out the worst in visiting British musicians?
There's a clip of Ian's new song on his MySpace. It starts off sounding like a Volkswagen commercial. Nice, though.

― StanM, Monday, 13 August 2007 19:26 (seventeen years ago)
Finally, after years of searching, I’ve found it: the worst album ever made. Quite the most fascinating thing about the former Stone Roses front man’s new record is wondering what his “people” – producer, A&R man, label boss, manager, mates – said to the singer after listening to the entirely unchanging sonic palette of processed beats, by-numbers string arrangements, clunky, lame, lazy, schoolboy-rhyming platitudes and polemic (“Life’s no simple situation/There’s the added complication/That the reason we’re all here, nobody knows/In all creation”), and Brown’s barely-there vocals. Did they go, “Nice one, son”, “Good old Browny, he’s done it again”? And if so, why, how – when the rest of us are laughing so loudly, we can scarcely hear the “songs”?
― James Mitchell, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:28 (seventeen years ago)
"What I've heard of the album so far is brilliant! There is always an agenda when the London media snobs review somoene like Ian Brown's abum."
― Raw Patrick, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:35 (seventeen years ago)
Ian Brown has a fine line in psycho fans, and unlike most there's the faintest possibility that one of them might actually come round and kick your head in for an unfavourable review.
Then again, I didn't think anyone other than his fanbase ever actually noticed new Ian Brown releases.
― Matt DC, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:52 (seventeen years ago)
As I was just saying somehwere else, I can't work out if this article was taking the p*ss out of Brown, or if he was sending himself up, or what:

― Jeff W, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:57 (seventeen years ago)
I have friends who might be counted amongst the "psycho fans" brigade were they not such meek, pleasant individuals. one of them met him (extremely enthusiastically) on the beach in brighton on friday night. and i have heard only good things about the new album so what that's all about i dunno.
― Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
His new album is very good. Very heavy on lush orchestration, which is the main thing that sets it apart from his previous material. There's an entire bonus disc of orchestral mixes, which I actually enjoyed a lot. Other than that, it's not a huge departure from his other material; a few great songs, more than a few cringeworthy lyrics, but overall very solid. "Illegal Attacks" is probably the worst thing on the album.
― musically, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago)
I am thinking of getting this album. I like "Illegal Attacks".
― PJ Miller, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
"Illegal Attacks" is stating the obvious at least four years too late.
The man is an arrogant, gormless twunt and the Stone Roses are the most overrated band ever.
― max r, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
I'm kind of liking the new single, even if it's just a reconfiguration of every solo single he's ever released. What I'm struck with, though (probably because I haven't gone to the trouble of seeing an Ian Brown video in years and years), is how all the sudden he's a VERY OLD MAN.

My Way is the sixth solo album by British artist Ian Brown. The album will be released on September 28, 2009. The album's lead single "Stellify" will be released on September 21, 2009.
My Way was inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller with Brown noting that "we mastered it on the day that Michael Jackson died (too), so I'm taking that as a good omen."
1. Stellify
2. Crowning Of The Poor
3. Just Like You
4. In The Year 2525
5. Always Remember Me
6. Vanity Kills
7. For The Glory
8. Marathon Man
9. Own Brain
10. Laugh Now
11. By All Means Necessary
12. So High

questions:
is he wearing a sweatshirt with a picture of himself on it?
what the hell does "stellify" mean?
is it possible to watch or listen to ian brown without feeling sort of bad for him?
― flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
Weird, I just was listening to him yesterday for the first time in awhile. "Corpses," "Set My Baby Free," and a few others really do hold up well. Oddly, the AMG review of "The World Is Yours" calls Golden Greats and Music of the Spheres post-Britpop masterpieces.
― Michael F Gill, Sunday, 13 September 2009 05:09 (fifteen years ago)
what the hell does "stellify" mean?

Yeah, well, he's married to a curvy Mexican woman, so beating up the flowers of indie rock womanhood looks decidedly dingy and drab to him I'd've thought.

He has never been a great vocalist, but he seems to have got significantly worse of late, you could probably pick a random member of the audience and they would do a better job.
