spinning off the purism thread, the "music qua music" thread, and my own frustration with trying to describe why i like some techno and not others.
probably no type of music more purist than techno, and no techno more adored by the purists than basic channel, specifically the m series of singles. one side of m5 is at 33 1/3. the other is at 45. there's not a single microsecond between the two that's identical, yet i doubt 1 out of 5 people could tell the difference between them, especially out at a club. seriously: why are there two versions? what were they trying for with the 33 1/3 side (i'll call it A) that they couldn't quite reach, so tackled with the 45 side (B)?
both sides have been stripped of virtually every radiant synth delay and amble sturdily along on an extremely awkward One Twothree (pause) One Twothree (pause) kickdrum/bassline (it's impossible to separate these categories here). tho it's all made with drum machines and delay equipment the track is quite warm and thick to feel, as if the basic channel machine developed a cold, called in sick, and maurizio begged it to come in anyway.
i like side A better because it's easier to DJ with both records at 33 1/3. my opinion would change immediately, of course, if my other record were playing at 45.

I've got M4 and M7. But I've not got a turntable right now.
This record you describe sounds great.

Mmm, a Basic Channel topic, so by law I must post a response. I only
have the cd-compilation and M5 is track 4 IIRC. Not exactly my
favourite (that's M7) but still very good. A well on-topic: maybe
there are two versions because of the different speeds? These 12-
inches are *really* aimed at DJ's, so maybe it's a some sort of
service to them. Maybe they just cut the track in two and so the
track continues on side 2?
Anyone hear that Basic Channel remix of Carl Craig's 'the Climax'?
Tasty. Although I can't spot any resemblance with the original. :)

i'm not sure i'm that into maurizio, i have the cd comp. how do you
think they differ from, say, Ploy? i really like Vainquer's Lyot, but
i cannot remember how, or even if, that is related to maurizio.

Vainquer's 'Lyot' was remixed by Maurizio. I think the term is:
storming remix. ;)

I think with Ploy that Gareth might have been referring to Maurizio's
first M single.

yes this is correct, Ploy being a Maurizio single. i didn't know this
was the first M single though
