That Impressions record is the dorkiest album cover I've seen in a long long time.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's terrific!

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't seem'em in a pic this small, but NRBQ themselves are sitting in the seats.
This makes it not so literal, doesn't it? Since the record is of them performing, not attending?

The Springfield says something about American notions of "working class"!

no opinion, Friday, 30 January 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's a studio record. The cover depicts them literally at Yankee Stadium. It's a joke, geddit?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Where approximately are they seated?

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Upper decks somewhere, if I remember correctly. "Green Light" is on this record (easily their most enjoyable track).

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

on his foot there, do you think that's wear-and-tear on the album cover or is it salt-stains on his zippered ankle boots? salt stains on rock boots are awesome.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

billy definitely could have hung out with these dudes:

if we could briefly bring it back to TVZ's "rear view mirror," i'm baffled that nobody complained that the mirror in the image is a side mirror, not a rear view mirror ... i mean what the fuck were they even thinking

budo jeru, Monday, 19 May 2025 21:38 (five months ago)

not so literal after all, eh?

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Monday, 19 May 2025 21:40 (five months ago)

That font. I've seen it in the logos of countless 80s BBC sitcoms, I'm sure.

conspiracitorial theories (stevie), Monday, 28 July 2025 14:51 (three months ago)

The linework, if not the letter forms, screams "Dynamite magazine." If I'm not mistaken, the idea must have been to take the thick, casually curving lines of writing in a thicker marker, but treat them as colored solids outlined by a thin black pen. I like it. Dynamite debuted in 1974... and, to its credit, kept that design all the way through its final issue in 1992. From "Dynamite Meets M*A*S*H" to "Julia Roberts! Arnold Schwarzenegger! Marky Mark Poster!"

Hot Coals (1981)

Rainbow - Straight Between The Eyes

The sleeve-art is by British artist Jeff Cummins and Hipgnosis, though has been described as "one of [Hipgnosis]' very worst; in fact, so bad, it taints the music."[8]

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 8 November 2025 18:47 (two days ago)

From what I recall of that album the music didn't require a lot of tainting. Hipgnosis did far worse covers later on (Audioslave!) but fortunately none of them were yawnsomely literal...I don't think?
