As if to dispel the commonly-held belief that liberals only like boring trad/rootsy and/or bland PC crud (e.g., dylan, springsteen, arrested development), the latest online edition of the nation features an article on the Cure.

so, when will the nation or (be still my beating heart!) utne reader or NPR do a feature on bowie, depeche mode, or the smiths?

Why the Smiths?

Why the Smiths?

b/c there's an entire generational swath of nation readers (or potential nation readers) for whom the smiths meant MUCH more than springsteen.

I like Springsteen more than the Smiths, but it does seem a bit unfair to not mention bands like the Smiths, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. It seems unbelieve able they wouldn't mention David Bowie by now.

Hey, you didn't even say it was written by ILX's own Douglas Wolk! Rah!

I doubt that fans of the Smiths are the biggest demographic they are missing by only covering the Ani-demographic.
Imagine if they started doing hip hop coverage...!

(and not Arrested Development either).

djdee2005, Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, hip-hop too!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Other musicians have appeared with him in videos and on stage, sometimes for years on end, but nobody can remember what any of them look like.

Hey wait, a blatant lie! (I can name at least half by appearance alone.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I could definitely name all of them and identify a good 85% by sight. (The easiest one to pick out is Andy Anderson, ha)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes.

(If all goes well my copy of Join the Dots should be here in about, oh, thirty minutes.)
