Everyone's answer really should be Ned Raggett Reads the Almanac.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Autechre : Tri Repetae.

It didn't work. Not even remotely.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That actually happened and wasn't fabricated in the interests of humour or internet cred?

Probably Clinic - Distortions. The lass ceased tongue entanglement to ask me if it was about necrophilia.

minolta (minolta), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it did happen. Seriously. We had very different tastes in music. By track three, she'd had enough and put on some opera instead.

I think it was Billy Crystal who said "women need a reason to have sex, but men just need a place". That pretty much summed up my feelings at the time.

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, A Love Supreme? I mean, it's by NO MEANS a bad album, but it was the wrong song for someone who doesn't like jazz.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my favorite songs ever, but New Order's "Thieves Like Us" once forced a de-entanglement and the pressing of fast-forward!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, the groove is super sexy, but the lyrics and singing are problematic in certain situations.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Set Me Free - Sweet - hey, it worked for me... wuz press for time, tho...

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

taking a first date to a foetus/wiseblood show. there wasn't a second date.

notfazed (notfazed), Sunday, 1 February 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Alimantado "Best Dressed Chicken in Town" was a no-go the other day.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Then I put in Jacques Brel, and that was well received. There must be a lesson about male vs. female sexuality there.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

A girl I used to work with said that on one of the very first times they met her (by then very longterm) boyfriend put on that Nasenbluten song about "cuttin' up her guts like spaghetti" looked at her expression and exclaimed, "OH! Don't worry, I wouldn't do that to you!"

OCP (OCP), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

USA For Africa, "We Are The World"

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

USA For Africa, "We Are The World"

I can imagine that not working on a number of levels.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, that was the first record I ever bought. I wasn't really thinking about macking at that point in my life though.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried Pig Destroyer once, but for some reason it didn't get her in the mood AT ALL. She just stared at me like I'd just killed her dog or something. Which I had, but she wasn't supposed to know about it yet.

slimebag (latebloomer), Sunday, 1 February 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk To Fuck

It was just the mood I was in as well, alas

mentalist (mentalist), Sunday, 1 February 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Minor Threat. Sort of a joke I guess.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 1 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

not ILM related, but I took a girl out to see Kids when it was still in theatres on a first date. Fortunately, we remained friends for years afterwards but Telly and Caspar nipped any chance for a romantic relationship in the bud.

Former Supposed So Called Nihilist Teenage Drug Disco Addiction Counselor (mjt), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably Blood by This Mortal Coil, or something by the Cocteau Twins.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

in every dreamhome a heartache

rumple, Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have assumed Gang Of Four's Entertainment! once but I was proven wrong.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i sang "somebody to watch over me". omg.

eleki-san, Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My playlist randomly played 'Let's Get On' once. The corny nature of the song playing while the on was getting was far too much for her to contain her laughter. I skipped it and we continued.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm...I didn't read this thread correctly, and failed to see the "Worst" part. I think Blood is magnificent (though playing the Cocteaus to "set the mood" does seem like a bit of a cliche).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, see, because it's so easy to prepare the same sex to get in the mood because gay people are easy like that. < /teasing >

generally, i don't try to play music to get someone in the mood. i'm a music geek. playing music immediately focuses my attention on the music. so then all other tasks I'm try to, ahem, concentrate on get put on the mental backburner.

silence is the best shatterer of shyness.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a movie recently where the guy put on some old scratchy LP of Connie Francis or something .. it always seems to work in the movies... So I was thinking, the thing to do would be go to the record stacks and randomly pull out any old record, as long as it's filed in the "Why do I own this shit?" section. It might work. Prolly not though.

Living Color: Love Rears Its Ugly Head

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually lost my virginity to "The Air That I Breathe" off the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, a fact that makes me quiver with embarrassment to this very day...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I did have to tell somebody to "turn off that bloody belle and sebastian" once.

shhhh (starry), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Once while the on was being gotten the CD that had been playing (Portishead, which was great) ended and it moved on to the next CD, which happened to be Bjork Selmasongs, a great album that is definitely NOT appropriate for the fuck.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Its multi-disc players that have a lot to answer for in this respect. I remember the soundtrack to one occasion moving from Al Green to one of the less listener-friendly parts of David Thomas' Monster box-set. Perhaps one of the parts where he is shouting about monsters.

Aloysius, Monday, 2 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yes Please" - Happy mondays. Critically mauled, not a great album. But we didn't care.. We laughed, we cried, we....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

S.o. I shouldn't have been with tried Catatonia 'Road Rage' on me. Aptly inept.

Eben Haëzer (stevo), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Gang of Four gets me all squishy down there...

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

wow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Too Much Information. sorry

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn’t a very serious attempt of me, but she found ‘Je t’Aime (Moi Non Plus)’ only amusing. And slightly disturbing, hah.

Orange, Monday, 2 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my favorite songs ever, but New Order's "Thieves Like Us" once forced a de-entanglement and the pressing of fast-forward!

I used to put on Brotherhood all the time purely because it was my favorite record at the moment and she was less than forthcoming about making a suggestion.,,.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

JSBX -- Jon came in with the "Baby, baby, you sure like to FUCK!" and scared him off.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Music generally is a separate lover than my other lovers... was basically my point above.

Kenny Loggins: "Danger Zone"

DC Harrison, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Blink 182's M+Ms. It actually worked. And brilliantly at that.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Most music has seemed to work at least passably for me. Of course, I haven't tried playing TSOL's "Code Blue" or Turbonegro's "Midnight NAMBLA" whilst trying to score yet.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

or gg allin

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i played led zeppelin's what is and what should never be.
and she was into it while it was slow.
but when the guitar kicked in she jumped and hit her head in the window

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember some random issue of Details where they said JSBX Orange was the best album to fuck to. thank god i never tried it.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Same Sex Passion Killers I Have Known:

1. Da Da Da - Trio. (We struggled on, manfully.)

2. Rapture - Anita Baker (Waaaay too OTT for the "casualness" of the situation; he made his excuses and left, whilst I returned to my rabbit stew.)
