i've been listening to it was written a couple times a day for about a week, since i was talking about it on the the explaining illmatic to sterling thread. i like the new nas, stillmatic nas, nastradamus nas. but it was written is sort of like the the early 90s nas classic. adding: that should have eclipsed illmatic. (i liked illmatic better for a long time!)
the intro strings, slavery, gonna be a hangin' tonight, and dropping into the second part-- '1996, (a-yo son, what the deal baby?) back up in this nigga (1996) the right way though, you know? it was all written.' and the message just kills it straight out, low key 90s trackmasters beat-- 'shit is grimy, real niggas buck in broad daylight with the broke mack that won't spray right-- don't give a fuck who they hit as long as the drama's lit.' flipping it illmatic style and the scratch of 'ya know my steelo' 'tttt-thhh-ere ain't a army that could' and sleep/cousin death.
all these trackmasters beats, the message, (i'm going to look through the liner notes-- it has the lyrics printed so you can learn it all very well) watch dem niggas, affirmative action (does it count if it's someone else other than barnes/jones for trackmasters?) whatever, the rest of them, street dreams (my favorite beat on it and it's just another low key 90s trackmasters beat but you totally have to hear it)
i can't get over how hot nas is lyrically on this and how much i like it. it's lyrical in the way that i guess rap nerds like, poetic in a bad way and lots of cleverness but no punchlines. so nice. (i gave you power is kind of lame, though.) i can't believe anyone who hasn't heard it was written thinks he comes nicer on illmatic. end of the cd, throwaway tracks are lyrically better than most of illmatic. he sounds so much more thoughtful and mature and like he's supposed to sound and way hotter ('omg taste in being subjective shocker').
next: affirmative action, which everyone knows is good-- before it, take it in blood is amazing and i like the way dre sounds at the start of nas is coming and they're making fake sucking noises (but it's kind of a lame track)-- affirmative action affirmative action affirmative action: the start of that makes me tingle, hairs on arms, all that, 'this is what- this is what they want, huh?' it almost sounds like at the start he doesn't know what they want but he becomes very sure all of a sudden. lust, envy, hate, jealousy (i always mess that up, i always forget it's jealousy) --- then he starts going and that IN FACT TOUCH MAS AND I REACT LIKE A ROTTWEILER fucking sets it off and i have to rewind it and hear it from the start at full volume and i get the lust, envy, hate, jealousy line right. there's so much i love about it: az sounds so young on his verse and he kills it and cormega kills it and YUKONS AND IN YA BLACK LEXUS - MEGA THE PRETTYBOY WITH MAFIA CONNECTIONS-- and nas's verse is kind of lacklustre and foxy kind of sucks, too. i like the way it starts . . . in the black camaro . . . but her verse doesn't stick to my head-- but there's a point in her verse when the beat kind of switches up and the harpsichord, i think that's what it is, does new things and it sounds like the beat's caught up to her or something.
black girl lost is okay, i like the start. suspect isn't great. shootouts is hot and the beat sort of sounds like affirmative action and it's awesome and he spits two of those nas-y stories in verse 1, 2: cop fucks with a hood girl and there's some kind of controversy and nas and his crew murder the cop and the girl, guy loses a bunch of money at a block party for a friend of nas and the guns come out and nas hasn't got his piece and flees the scene and several people are shot. live nigga rap, whatever.
ending with: if i ruled the world, which you know is good, right?
peace to my man nasir jones, bravehearts, az, foxy, cormega, all my real thugs in the qb, and alex in nyc.

It Was Written is great...but honestly it really doesn't live up to Illmatic. Lyrically, production-wise, conceptually...at all.
I think "If I Ruled the World" is ridiculously cheesy.

"street dreams" is for serious, "nas is coming" is great, i actually kinda dig "if i ruled the world," and "affirmative action" is alright but feels like a missed opportunity. the rest of this is snooze to me. maybe i just haven't given it enough of a chance.

I think it's just Deej who hates "If I Ruled the World", he's just vocal about it to the point where it seems like multiple people. "The Message" is A++, too.

dk's analysis was real on point but considering he dismisses 1/3rd of the tracks (and hes right) i have trouble getting all contrarian about this record being the REAL ILLMATIC or whatever. but yeah a good half of this shit is amazing, and 'street dreams' is the joint ive been playing on rewind a lot lately. sometimes you just hear the beat in your head and have to hear it again and again.
