Stickers on CDs, classic or dud?

I HATE this. I mean, I'm using the word HATE about stickers here. Why? Just why? Every CD/book/DVD you buy has half a dozen stickers all over it, that either make the case sticker and horrible with that white gunk over it, or if you have a card DVD/CD case, there's the possibility of a massive tear appearing in your not-an-hour old purchase.

I HAVE to take them off - quite frankly, I can't stand the idea of something being on these CDs that the artists sisn't intend, or for that matter, I intended. It is a watse of my time, a waste of the companies time and money to put these stickers all over the case, and a waste of the world resources.

A special shout goes to those annoying "!" stickers that every other CD has these days - what's that all about? Grr, stickers can die.

I hate them too, but you can always just use a solvent.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, I really like the sticker on my copy of the Orbital brown album, which says the album is as "sensual as spring rain"

"At Long Last, the Complete Gospel According to Sister 'Re! Her Biggest-Selling, GRAMMY* Winning Album From 1972 - Expanded to Include More Than an Hour of Previously Unreleased Testifyin'"

Otherwise, I really hate the sticker-on-card-digipack minefield too, but this is more because of the innate crappy/Wrongness of digipacks than any huge objection to stickers. Jewel-case-removed-sticker-gunk can be deftly removed with a little Mr Sheen or similar

I like the pink "The Nice Price" stickers with the rounded, bubbly font.

Famous Athlete, Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

It depends, sometimes I like them.

My LP copy of the New York Dolls' Too Much Too Soon has a sticker the original owner stuck on the front. It says 'Hard Rock Is My Candy' in a yummy 70s font. No way would I peel that off!

Stickers with album title/band name when cover doesn't reveal it: CLASSIC.
Stickers w/ info/ratings about the album in question: OK.
Nice price/sale/discount stickers ULTRA MEGA DUD.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago) link

I hate that the "Nina Nastasia" sticker on the case of The Blackened Air got caught on something when i was opening it and it's all torn up and makes the beautiful front cover look crappy.

I put a Weezer CD of mine in an Outkast CD case. So its the deuchebags from Weezer on the cover and the sticker says, "The Stankiest Album of their Career!"

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 2 February 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with Famous Athlete about the "Nice Price" stickers. It makes me sad to know that someday record companies will stop making them.

christhamrin, that's awesome.

Sean that "Hard Rock" sticker is ULTRA MEGA awesome.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:14 (twenty years ago) link

As long as the sticker doesn't stick, I find it OK. Some album covers are so "arty" they tell nothing about the artist or the album title, and then you will need a sticker to find the right album in the shop.

However, after buying it you should be able to tear off the sticker without the glue still sticking to the cover.

Oh, is that what that means? It was always nonsense to me. Now I get it. Still, I hate stickers.

"THE STUNNING NEW ALBUM FROM [XXXX] WITH THE HIT SINGLES "[Currently released single which only gets to no. 16] AND [The next proposed single, which subsequently gets dropped in favour of the really cheesy poppy track!!!!]"!!!!!!!!!

I fucking hate stickers. I've left my Dizzee rascal one on, but I'm not sure why. Oh, and Ideology by Mouse On Mars too, cos it is the cover.

i hate stickers. price stickers - big one's like you get when you buy stuff in a sale - especially.

Haha! The memories!

I love doing what christhamrin is talkin' 'bout. When I crushed the case to my copy of Illmatic I switched it out with one from Ben Folds' Fear of Pop album. My mom saw it and read the sticker and was like "is William Shatner really on this album?" and we laughed and laughed.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

I had an Arab Strap album with a sticker that said "remove this sticker" and it took me ages to decide whether to do so or not :-/

classixx include :

"if you have the three e.p's you don't need to buy this record"
(lemon jelly - ky)

and recently the scissor sisters which proudly announces
'so hip it hurts' from i-d. (snigger)

An example of a truly classic sticker, from Guns'n'Roses' otherwise patchy and somewhat controversial "Use Your Illusion" album(s):

This album contains language which some listeners may find objectionable. They can F?!* OFF and buy something from the New Age section

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

Yesterday I noticed my local library has a copy of 'On Earth To Make The Numbers Up' by Fosca with a sticker saying "featuring the international hits 'Virtual Insanity' and 'Cosmic Girl'". That was vaguely amusing, but price stickers = obvious dud.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago) link

When you see the yellow sticker that says something like "buy the gift of music," it's usually applied to cover up other previous price stickers/gunk on the shrink-wrap. At least that's been my experience.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

The worst are record shops that put price stickers on the focking album cover itself.

three years pass...

has anybody else noticed that the adhesive on those crappy CD stickers is now even harder to remove?...this is how they're trying to steer us away from downloading?!

henry s, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

As long as the stickers use a kind of glue that makes them easy to remove, it doesn't bother me. And in those cases when the glue is not of the right kind, it is usually the price tag that is the problem rather than the stickers.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 07:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm finding that the stickers are easy to remove, but the adhesive stays affixed to the jewel box...it's like the stickers are now made even more cheaply, such that the adhesive bonds better to the plastic box than to the printed label...

henry s, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Music & Video Exchange to thread... they must use superglue on their stickers. I've not bought stuff in digipaks from there just because of their stupid fucking stickers that tear half the packaging off.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to have a theory that independent record stores were less likely to get CDs where the identifying sticker that goes across the top (in the US) would leave that godawful sticky residue, as I seemed to be more likely to get those in a Best Buy or Circuit City. My rationale was that the independent store would have to charge more on average, but you'd be more likely to get a good copy. Like the labels carelessly produced huge batches for the big retailers while making smaller, carefully assembled runs for the indies.

This doesn't really make any sense, and seemed disproven a couple days ago when I went to my local independent and bought the Von Südenfed which was left with much stickiness post-peeling.

goo gone or wd40 do wonders.

funny farm, Friday, 22 June 2007 02:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I started buying lots of classic hip-hop albums from that CDNow club thing on Amazon where they're all like 8 bucks new and they don't even put stickers on their CDs! I'm sure they're saving money by doing this, which begs the question, OH COME THE FUCK ON ALREADY

Yes, well, MVE never miss an opportunity to hammer it into their customers' heads that YOU ARE SCUM and you get what you pay for since if you were a THRUSTING THATCHERKID with a PROPER JOB you could get it new and unstickered for full price (multiple xpost).

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 June 2007 08:09 (seventeen years ago) link

But then, of course, thrusting Thatcherkids don't have time to work out what an album's called if the title and artist are not printed in BIG BABY LETTERS.
