I used to go dancing in the late 80s and the DJ would play a track that just repeated the phrase New York New York kind of a hard industrial/dancey song. Usually played with another track called Peanuts. Please help me figure this out its been bugging me for 15 years!

By the way I screwed up on the title of the thread. It should have read New York New York.

DOH!

Nina Hagen's "New York, New York" mebbe? Not especially "industrial," but kinda dancey.

could it be?

wow thanks alex!

anybody know a band name for that peanuts track?

hector (hector), Saturday, 2 October 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually, there are lyrics to that track (beyond simply saying "New York, New York"), so it may not be the track you're searching for.

My guess is "New York" by Micro Chip League.

nah. I'm sure Alex is right on this. You can also ask did her vocals sound like a bad opera star. If you can answer yes then it's Nina.

no, I think the track Hector is looking for is the Micro Chip League song. It was a huge club track down south in the late eighties and early nineties and a staple of strip clubs as well. Never heard the Nina Hagen track played out that I remember. I believe the MCL version that was the club "hit" was the dancefloor mix on Oak Lawn records. It's been years since I've heard it but it is very industrial sounding with a deep voice bellowing New York New York over and over with a few other lyrics I can't remember.

I don't think it can be the Nina Hagen song, her New York New York is a slow rap, not a hard industrial dance song.

Might be Soup "New York-London" - old rave classic (1991?) with a screaming male vocal going "New York New York" on and on.

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Certainly not the Grandmaster Flash song of the same name?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 2 October 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago)

I think the micro chip lead might be more what I was looking for. I have heard Nina Hagen and would have remembered that. I am from the south so that also fits into the puzzle. The deep voice also registers and I really can remember no other lyrics.

The only question now is how to get hold of it.

In case anyone is interested I found it in a mix. Along with some other older and newer electro stuff.

It's Microchip League (sometimes shortened to MCL) and it's called "New York New York". There was also a song called "Houseman (Germany Calling)" by Voyou that was also released on Oak Lawn records (RIP) around the same time with the same sound.

Yeah, I remember when they played it at every club I went to (now, how much am I dating myself? :)

Thanks Hector, for pointing out my mix. Between people searching google for the MCL song and George Kranz's "Din Daa Daa" (covered by the Roots awesomely as the second hidden track at the end of their new album "The Tipping Point") I get a lot of traffic to my mixes page.. I also do a radio show and archive it (since I'm now on a community station that doesn't have an internet audio stream) on my website.

Sorry for the shameless self-promotion, but it's nice to see people still enjoying stuff from back in the day. :)
