What...the...fuck?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago) link

The video's set in a scary gothic cathedral type place!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry, when did Blazin' Squad transform from Kappa garage pop into what sounds like Fatman Scoop riding a steamroller over the twelve best hip-hop tracks of 2001?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago) link

Is this the best song ever?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:19 (twenty years ago) link

Graham "Beaky" Beecroft: Blazin Squad's biggest fan.

Patrick Kinghorn, Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:19 (twenty years ago) link

Is this what "Boy In Da Corner" sounds like to everyone else?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

Has the black one's voice broken, or is someone else on the hook?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

OK, they still can't rap. "We're back like part two, but this ain't a movie".

But still... orchestras! Indian strings! Shouting!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

Didn't they have underground hype pre-'Crossroads'? Because until 'Flip Reverse' the idea of tolerating them was like "hell no".

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

their version of crossroads was good though

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

No. No it wasn't.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago) link

"Standard Flow" was a brill proto-grime garage hit but I never heard any version other than the instrumental or D'N'D's Elephant Man remix so it totally shocked me when they turned into a ballad-friendly boy-army.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

dom your hatred for "bad" hip-hop and your love for brit-hop seems incompatable to me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago) link

lol

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:02 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, strongs, this isn't British hip-hop. They're still a garage boyband. http://www.popcussions.com/viewtopic.php?t=914 should proove as much.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

And I know me and Tim are the only two people that'll stick up for British hip-hop, but, damnit, me and him are right (he's wrong about Taskforce, obviously, but apart from that).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone heard the newie from Extra Flammable Material Crew 'Hook up wid me, Im like hot mulch'?

omg, Monday, 2 February 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

(also: iTunes just decided the obvious segue out of this is into Tori Amos' cover of "Enjoy the Silence". That's a mixtape in itself)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:20 (twenty years ago) link

it totally shocked me when they turned into a ballad-friendly boy-army.

Oddly, this doesn't sound like a criticism (maybe b/c "boy-army" is kinda amusing).

Barima (Barima), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:29 (twenty years ago) link

The first few syrupy singles (particularly 'Crossroads') were awful but 'Flip Reverse It' was incredible. The latest one slightly less so but still very good.

David (David), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'll stick up for British hip-hop! I don't do it very vocally cos all the tunes I know I got off Tim - but I listen to it a fair bit.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago) link

I remember... didn't you have "Countryman" as your album of 2001 at one point, Tico?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I put it second or third on Pazz and Jop I think. I don't pay as much attention as I should though, I'm lazy and get Tim to make CDs up for me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:49 (twenty years ago) link

I thought I was alone in my fondness for ver Squad! But it's ILM sanctioned? Coolio.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

There is something funny about sticking up for British hiphop and complaining nobody else will and then absolutely despising Dizzee Rascal!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

a) he's not hip-hop
b) he's shitty
c) grime is the new Britpop, discuss

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

d)people are sticking up for him

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago) link

Ronan, Dizzee's hardly the be-all-end-all!

(x-post)

a) depends on who you ask (don't forget 'Fix Up')
b) ditto
c) ditto I'll think about this one

Barima (Barima), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

who is the ocean colour scene of grime?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

hahahahahahahahaha

Basically. I dunno what to think about Diz Riz, I mean yeah s'allright, but Reynolds had me prepared for the second coming really, and he isn't. I think you have to get rid of all the faux-cultural-studies representin' bullshit and listen to the music a bit more closely before repping him that fully, and I can't find space in my life for it.

But this is about BLAZIN SQUAD, who are not UK hip-hop, clearly. They're the street-level Busted.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

Of course he's not the be all and end all but it still strikes me as funny.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

Enrique mostly OTM but Busted >>> Blazin' Squad.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah Blazin Squad and Busted are pretty similar - great commercial ideas and creatively well-realised. Best of luck to them.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

Lyrically, BS slay all -- even Busted:

I'm a do it real good if you know how i felt,
we could take it downstairs, like below the belt,
whateva you want i got it, i'm hot baby ya want it,
love solid for hours not even austin powers could top it,
I'll groove better than u, slew better than me,
cruise over you's and use the penny, prove that i'm ready,
prefer it with many but really i dont care,
cos dis chick so bling its gettin frosty in ere...

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago) link

Did Busted tour as an *actual* band before fame? I remember reading this a few weeks back, and it just struck me as... unlikely.

(and, yeah, the BS and Busted comparisons are pretty obvious really, as both are a slightly more commercially palatable version of genres that have crossed-over, but not crossed-over to the extent that they have the ability to).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago) link

"Flip Reverse" would've been sooooooo much better if it had just been the "wer-wer-wer-wer-wa-wa-wer-wer-wa-wa-wer-wer" intro for 3 minutes and nothing else.

I think Krazy (the blonde one who looks like Owen Wilson) sings all the hooks, the reason being that he iz well bufff.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

do I count as someone who has stuck up for British hip-hop?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 2 February 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

yeah the blonde one IS cute, huh?

for me, Flip reverse and here 4 one are steps in the right direction, but theyre not quite there yet.

busted are a good idea, but their songs are just not catchy enough. McFly on the other hand, i really am quite excited about...

lid, Monday, 2 February 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

Busted songs are ridiculously catchy! Yet to hear McFly but they get instant marks for referencing the greatest film evah in their name.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago) link

y'all need to hear Space Cowboy's 'All About The Money' if you haven't - better than this i reckon
